"Broken" Realforce value
« on: Sun, 07 August 2016, 18:39:25 »
First off, I apologize if this isn't the correct place to ask this.

Secondly, I recently tried modifying my 55g black Realforce and 45g 104 white Realforce's left control key plungers. To make a long story short, they are both broken now :p

How much would you guys value a 55g 87u black Realforce and a 45g 104u white Realforce (both very new, only typed on a few times) with missing left control plungers at?

The left control on the 87u has horizontal notches for mounting. I tried making vertical ones by cutting into the plastic. It actually worked fine, until it was about 90% done. Then it snapped :p

The 104u plunger was just a dumb mistake. I had it out to compare it to the 87u one and I accidentally dropped a heavy ass textbook on it :(

If it is just a broken plunger/stem I'm sure you could find someone with spares.

Although if those aren't normal then maybe not.

it's a shame that realforce board have a unique stem on the left ctrl like that

i know that people have 3d printed MX topre sliders, so it's possible that one could be printed for this. obviously the quality would be fairly low but the board would no longer be a write-off.

For the 104u one I hopefully can. The left control plunger on the tkl Realforce's are unique though...

If you really think it's beyond repair, the 55 gram domes are certainly worth something to folks who want them to mod their HHKB.

The plunger definitely is. You can replace the plunger though, so I'm wondering if there's still resell value.

If the 87u was mine, I'd flip the dip switch to swap left control and caps-lock, put a dummy cap in the old control spot and just go with that. Now your left control key is in the proper place and I could type for years without a caps-lock key. :)

I've got a whole bunch of topre parts lying around, including plungers from a Novatouch. Lmk if you need some.

Also, sorry to hear that the boards are damaged.  :-X You can resell many of those parts.

Welcome to Geekhack!

Have you considered having someone evaluate whether they can be repaired?

Chances are if an enthusiast buys them for next to nothing, they will repair them and then either have a couple of great keyboards, or sell them for profit.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
