Fluorescent Green QFR top case
« on: Thu, 24 April 2014, 10:44:23 »
I recently purchased an extra top case for my QFR and painted it fluorescent green to match the green/black theme of my PC

If you follow this link there are more pics and info http://imgur.com/a/Br9kY

Painting the Quckfire Rapid top case is fairly simple.

I don't have any pics of the top case before laying down the 2-in-1 base coat but PREP PREP PREP and PREP some more.

I used 600 grit sand paper and spent at least 2 hours sanding all of the rubberized material off. After sanding I blew all of the dust off and wiped it down and let it dry for about an hour before painting.

DON'T BUY CRAPPY PAINT! (IE; Valspar 2 in 1)! I've painted a lot of stuff with spray paint and this was by far the worst paint Ive ever used. It didn't cover well at all and it covered everything in green dust (NOTE: not sticky paint type dust but rather sawdust feeling crap that easily rinsed off)

After about 6 coats of the 2-in-1 (yes, 6 coats!) Coverage was absolutely terrible. I threw the can in the trash and took myself to walmart and picked up some Krylon Fluorescent Green spray paint.

Since I already had a primer/base coat down I decided NOT to cover that with a primer, I used the Valspar as a primer BUT I recommend using a primer before paint and not 2 in 1 (learn from my mistake).  When I got back home with the Krylon Flourescent Green paint I did a light sanding with some 1,000 grit for a smooth surface (you likely wont need to this unless your paint choice sucked too).

I laid down 4-5 coats of the Krylon Flourescent Green and was happy.

After the paint dried I used this Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel for a hard clear coat. When ever I am spray painting I always use this for Clearcoat because it dries very thick and has a nice shine.

After ???? coats of clear I let it sit for about 24 hours to dry before putting it back on the keyboard.

Nice shade of green :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Haha, probably the 35?  Can't imagine getting such a shallow dof on the 15-85, unless you were at 85!  Either way awesome!  Time for me to get a 60 or 75% board!

I really like the look of 60% boards, but they are too small for me. My hands are that big, but even on the QFR I feel like it's smaller than I'm used to

Btw, it seems to be impossible to get Krylon spraypaint around here... :/
Someone knows a good brand that offers neon-green and is easily available in Europe?

FWIW the vibrant green got on my nerves FAST (I don't think it was green for a month before I changed it).

whatever color you decide to paint your case be sure it's something you really enjoy or you will be repainting due to it being obnoxious.
