Hello Geekhack buddies!

GB Confirmed to start on October 2nd, available at SandKeys.ME

This is something I am very proud of. I hope you like it as much as my cat wants to steal it!

IC FORM

Specs

6 degree, 60% with xt column
Adjusted front height of 19.1mm (see below)
7.8mm plate to top case clearance
WK and WKL options available
MX + Alps compat (with mx stabs)
Stock Alu 5052 plate with 1.2mm pcbs
Currently testing 1.6mm pcbs with ABS plates. PC plates are too dead sounding for this.
Internal brass weight/sheet. This is interchangeable with PC bottoms - reasoning below
~~External Stainless Steel weight - upcoming protos to have polished SS instead of brushed~~ GB edition will have clear coated brass external weight
Top mount standard, with optional gummy mount included. Uses 190x4mm orings
1433g with current build (photo below)

No foam. With this much surface area covered in brass, its not needed.

The option of having a pc internal bottom was something I thought might be of interest. This piece replaces the internal brass
I love how PC sounds, but hate touching it - or my cat scratching it. It is something I will test when I get new protos, and update here.
Going forward I want to experiment with other materials in this fashion, so why not

Anodization options
I am testing another manufacturer. Each of the below are currently being tested with the anodizer, as there are several protos on the way.
I will remove what I do not like, or do not deem a high enough quality.

Red (current proto)
Navy
Green
Silver
Purple
Pink

Adjusted front height
Measured without feet as I am changing the feet being used. Measured from the inside edge of top case to external case floor.

PCB Support
Each unit comes with the necessary C3 Unified daughterboard + 150mm medusa cable.
There are SMD LEDs on caps lock, and the 2 top left keys (acting as layer indicators)

Prototype images
This unit came with some particularly poor anodization - something I am working on to improve. Note - I take horrible photos

GMK Red Devils

Sides - i love corsa sides, but wanted something with a much "softer" aesthetic.

Back (yikes it was a sunny day)

External SS brushed. Is being updated to polished, but I like this. Will test regular sandblasting too!

Internal brass weight - can't take a photo right now, heres a screenshot from a previous build stream. Yeah, that's covering a large surface area.
The gap is present on the divider between the XT columns and main alpha/mod cluster, to affect sound as little as possible.
Note the USB port is also aligned along this divider.

Soundtests

I'll post some more when I sit down to record a few. Remember, soundtests are a meme

15/7/2022 - V2 units have shipped. Sound and feel is there, but the factory has screwed me over with finishing and ano. This project is being moved to the same factory making Safa - meaning cost is going up, and unit cap will have to increase to compensate for the target price. Seems like I can only trust this place to not let me down.

26/07/2022: GB details confirmed. Change of manu means a slightly higher cost than anticipated but the quality on the finish will be worth it.

I would consider 6u hhkb, but that exists on a xt board that is specifically designed around that layout. 7u hhkb may be an option but we shall see after protos, since I dont want to increase SKUs right now, but maybe closer to the drop.

I do have a true hhkb layout board in prototype too, just not with xts. Again, not saying no

Really, really nice. The design is great, and I appreciate the Alps compatibility. I am definitely in on this one, or at least will try to get in on this one. The low count of 100 boards will make that a challenge - it would be great if you would consider raising that number.

Right now I’m not too concerned about the numbers. The reason I prefer less is so I can deliver the boards faster. In the same way as my previous project, if there is significant interest I would add to the count.

That being said - I’m likely moving manufacturers (again) so to keep that price, or even close to it, numbers would have to increase. Doing all this (including testing new production lines) before the gb since I want that to run smooth.

Alps plates are being tested, but I have both variants with mx stabs and AEK/AT101 stabs (think of SGI Granite)

It’s definitely not cheaper
