Intro

VERTEX and EQUALZ founded TKD six months ago. We named our first project "Cycle" (Cycle/Recurrence), reminding us not to forget the path we've traveled and the passion we uphold.

Design

This is a 70% (FRL) keyboard. Compared to the traditional TKL, this layout omits the function keys row but retains a separate function area and arrow keys. It possesses a sleek shape without losing the practicality that this size offers. There have already been many excellent 70% kits out there, but we believe that Cycle7 can offer a richer and more interesting experience.

Decentralization and theme attenuation have always been our design philosophy. There are many definitions of a good keyboard, but having enough inclusiveness is the design recognition we pursue.

We will not rashly define what is minimalist and high-end, but we will strictly control the parameters and proportions of every detail to adapt to the aesthetic comfort of more people.

TKD Coating and Material

TKDcoating - Electrostatic Coating developed by TKD

Coating surface treatment has been widely accepted in the keyboard community for its pure color representation, providing a wider range of choices.

Since we founded TKD, we have been researching and mastering the use of this process on keyboard cases. We have made good progress and for the first time in the Cycle7 project, we have adopted the TKDcoating electrostatic coating process.

Case

The keyboard case is made of 6063-T6 aluminum and produced by CNC, with anodized and TKDC.

Case options:
└ WK
└ WKL

Internal Counterweight/Battery Cover

The keyboard comes with two H62 brass battery covers, finished with sandblasting.

Stainless Steel Weight

A large stainless steel weight is attached at the bottom of the keyboard. The surface treatment includes mirror polishing, sandblasting, and PVD.

EZ-assemble System and Structural Design

EZ-assemble System - a ball-catch quick-assemble structure

The keyboard community is creative. Mortise and tenon, ball-catch, pull-rod...various forms of EZ-assemble structures have brought more fun to custom keyboards. After studying various EZ-assemble methods, we believe that the ball-catch form is currently the most efficient and stable EZ-assemble solution, so we have adopted this scheme for Cycle7.

However, we always believe that the true value of the EZ-assemble structure needs to be established on one premise: that is, to allow user to quickly switch structure forms and mod combinations according to their preferences.

Therefore, for Cycle7, we offer two structure forms and multiple mods for users to choose from, making the EZ-assemble structure especially important.

The development of custom keyboards has always been driven by the pursuit of typing feel and sound performance, and in this respect, we have invested a lot of design resources.

Dual Gasket Mount

Cycle7 uses two types of Gasket, and with the EZ-assemble, the internal mounting gaskets can be changed within 1 minute without the need to use any tools:

- Gasket-Strip: Offers a more delicate and soft typing experience,
- Gasket-Bean: Provides a more elastic and interesting typing experience.

Flex Cuts

We always believe that through Flex cuts can maximize their function.

Various forms of Flex cuts have appeared in the keyboard community, and we have adopted what we believe to be the most efficient and controllable scheme to provide users with elastic typing experience in the alpha area.

PCB-cut Plugs

PCB flex cuts are indeed effective in providing a soft and bouncy typing feel, but their impact on the sound performance of keyboards without foam is fatal. Therefore, we have designed PCB-cut plugs. Compared to Tape Mod, it can provide better sound performance.

Case noise optimization

With the development of aluminum alloy keyboards to date, case noise has always been a difficult problem for designers and users, making it difficult for metal case keyboards without filling foam or various mods to produce clean sound.

However, with Cycle7, we have achieved effective suppression of case noise without filling foam, allowing users to avoid the homogeneity problems brought about by various types of foam filling. With a cleaner case sound profile, users can try more combinations to achieve their desired setup.

Of course, Cycle7 also comes standard with various types of foam (PCB foam, underswitch PE layer, Case foam) to meet the demand for a "thockier" sound.

PCBs

Cycle7 offers both QMK Wired and wireless PCBs.

Wired based on QMK

Developed with the official QMK library, supports VIA/VIAL;

Wireless

We have contracted a hardware development company in the peripheral industry. They have customized a triple-mode firmware solution and dedicated driver for Cycle7. In preliminary testing, the latency of Bluetooth and 2.4G reached a level that surprised us. It's equipped with two 2200mAh batteries to ensure battery life in wireless mode.

Looks too good to be true but at this price point I'd be willing to take a chance.

Sorry if it's a reading fail on my part but will there be an option for a carry case?

Any chance of having extra top cases available for sale as add-ons? I think that would pair well with the price point and ease of assembly.

Please consider supporting split backspace on at least one of your PCBs. If it was up to me I think wired solderable PCB should have this option.

Since this is an IC thread and not a GB one, I hope it’s possible to make such adjustments or at least create an add-on PCB with this option

Otherwise it looks like a real banger!  :thumb:

Looks to be a pretty good project with a great price. Just kinda wish there was just a normal pcb without flex cuts still, that it would come in a hard case (If it isn't already) and I feel that split backspace support on at least the solder pcbs, I feel like that is a must for a pcb. GLWIC

Great pricing! What is the built & unbuilt weight of the board?
Also since the hotswap pcb does not offer ISO , there is no need for split left shift.

Guys just pop in a cut-plug. Nobody else will know and it will feel great =)

Nothing better than typing in front of your friends while none of them know you've got a cheeky cut-plug secretly wedged in.

It doesn't matter if I plug in the weird buttplug or not, the typing feel will be completely different to a non-cut PCB. You sir doesn't know why people want a non-cut PCB

Best of luck with the IC and hoping you have a great GB, you're checking all the marks for now :thumb:

love seeing that non-flex cut PCB and adding split backspace support were addressed so quickly. if we also get access to firmware source for the wired PCBs and a plate file after GB, this is a no-brainer buy for me.
any hint on which MCU will be used for the wired PCBs? I didn't see anything from the zfrontier IC.

Looks like an insta-buy to me.  I've always wanted an FRL-TKL, and was pretty much shocked when I saw how low the estimated prices were.  Granted, it doesn't have an ultra-complex design style that would substantially drive up the price, but it's still great looking and, obviously, a lot of thought and planning has gone into characteristics that matter.  Frankly, I'd rather it have a fairly straightforward style, be well thought-out, and be affordable, than pay twice as much for something that looks a little more complex and doesn't necessarily sound great, or feel great, or have a well-thought-out assembly.

I have set of PBTFans Purpurite, and I've been wondering what keyboard I would end up putting it on.  That dark blue-purple colored case is pretty sweet, and it looks like it was made for Purpurite.  Not to mention that the keyboard not costing much more than the keyset really emphasizes how much we overpay for little bits of plastic.

Looks amazing! Instant buy for me! Love seeing less common layouts and I love how much feedback you are taking from the community.

Would love to see a bunch of plate options, preferably POM, and I would love to see a Canadian vendor,  preferably Shockport!

Hopefully if this GB goes well you would consider doing a FRL 1800 in the same style!

Good luck with all!

Will have Alu, FR4 and PC.

Am I blind or is the angle of the board not mentioned here? Also, I'm curious about this wireless PCB, is it possible to customise the keymap, like with QMK?

The typing angle is 7°, about the wireless PCB, we will give more details later.

I checked out the page on Zfrontier, are all those colorways going to be in the GB or just some?

Yes, all those colorways will be included in the GB.

Please consider adding LatamKeys as a South America regional vendor, as another user said, there are a lot of people in here that are interested in the project.
Thanks!

Yeah, I would love to buy one, but I'm worried about those ball clips - will they rattle? I mean they might not be entirely tight, you could feel lose after assembly?

Sorry, everyone. The GB date will be delayed to mid or late July.

The GB of the Cycle7 is going to be delayed for a few weeks due to the great challenge of logistics to do all the marketing outside of China expected for this keyboard, during the coming weeks you will start to see a lot of content about this keyboard.

No apology needed. Take your time, get initial impressions/thoughts from the reviewers, and make any adjustments if needed. Personally, I'd rather have a fantastic product and wait a bit longer than have a rushed product that could've been improved!

I was going to wait for Wuque Studio to release an Aurora in a colour I like, but this is incredibly tempting...

Gasket, FRL, PC plate option, included decent stabilizers.

Could you maybe show Lunar, Fog, and Rock close to one another so I can get a better sense of the colours?

Also, is Lunar the silver one? I like that the good shades of silver and blue are available. Is Reef really that bright?

Just saw LightningXI's build for this and I'm kinda disappointed the real life Void Elf is so different from the IC. The darker purple in the IC really attracted me because it's a shade of purple that's not often seen. I guess I might get another colour although I am a little worried that all the colours will turn out different from what we see here.

Edit: Got a response on Discord that photos of the actual colours will be shown as they come in, thanks!

That dark rich plum color was really attractive and I was expecting something like that. The render is for sure not at all the color of the board. Not even close.

Oh well. I'll still pick one up or another color, just disappointing.

Maybe black or silver!

Possibly a stupid question, and no matter what, I'm grabbing a unit.

Has the ball-catch mechanism been stress tested with detaching and re-attaching the top case to the bottom case multiple times? And if so, was there a number where it started to show wear and tear?

Not like I'm going to be rebuilding 100s of times, but I just wanted to throw that out there out of curiosity.

GLWGB, can't wait to grab mine next week!

Sorry if this was already asked/answered, but does this custom firmware allow for key mapping, as the wireless version will not ve VIA-compatible? Very excited for this board!

Hi guys.
Pleased to announce our involvement as OCE vendor for this. I know a few people have been saking as it's not listed in the OP.

Would this come with 1000HZ for wired?

Yes, wired and 2.4G both come with 1000HZ.

Which weight color is this shiny one?
Mirror PVD prism?

This is purple PVD SS.

Sorry if this was already asked/answered, but does this custom firmware allow for key mapping, as the wireless version will not ve VIA-compatible? Very excited for this board!

Yes, of course. The firmware allows for key mapping.

Thanks for your support! The ball-catch mechanism will keep tight even rebuild it thousands of times. :D

Thanks for the response!

Obviously, we'll have to see once everyone gets their units from the GB, but this could really be a turning point in the hobby (Cycle7).

I know  that the Matrix Corsa and jris75 also use a catch ball mechanism.

For sure! I guess I should've clarified - more like how the Geon's Frog TKL changed the hobby (in-housing some or all parts of creating a board = ridiculously good price for what you get), I think the Cycle 7 is going to do the same.

Ano is ridiculously good for the price, and so are sound, feel, and looks (while taking into consideration preference). A board that in no way should cost this little for as fantastic it appears to be!

Of course, until we get our units in our hands, we won't really know (or until the Chinese GB participants get their boards) if it's just the reviewer boards that are like this, or if it's all of our boards.

Hello, I'm trying to place an order at the corresponding vendor for my region (North America, I'm located in Mexico) but I get this error after entering my address and trying to proceed to checkout:

I opted for WKL Lunar - Hotswap Wireless PCB, That includes the batteries but - does that mean i will not receive the internal brass weights? Hope this is not the case!
Asking here since it is not listed specifically at any vendor.

There is room under the brass weights for the batteries. They are actually referred to as battery covers in the product description. The wired version has that same space filled with foam or some other material beneath the weights.

Are we going to get any kind of further information or video on how the wireless PCB functions and the features available on it before the GB closes?

Considering it's new and not the QK/Zoom software, I'd like to see it before I commit to purchasing...

You need to consider offering ISO enter in the hotswap PCB as well. Hope this feedback will be considered for Cycle8 atleast. Neo 80 supports ISO enter on hotswap PCB. This is actually a deal breaker after seeing the flexibility offered on Neo 80.

I agree, there doesn’t seem to be ISO enter support on the hotswap board for the Cycle8, at least not from the zfrontier page. I suggest waiting for the international sale page to see if that carries over.

Upcoming Cycle8 is a classic TKL. See the zfrontier links posted earlier. There’s no actual English language product page available just yet.

The GB for Cycle8 is already in progress in China. Cycle7 deliveries are in progress worldwide. If this is not brought to their attention now, it might carry over to the international GB as well. Sure we have to wait for the international IC/GB details.

I just received this keyboard today, build quality and the TKD coating is all perfect! Acoustically with all the foams in it's pretty much the thockiest keyboard you can find! Without foam it still sounds great and full.

@clickclack.io What I need now is the software download to remap the keys since I
got the Bluetooth/wireless version.  Please help provide the link here. Thank you!

Although it's not as big as a saving as I originally thought. I went all out with the $180 package, plus $50 shipping and another $25 for duty. All in all it's over $330 Canadian.  FYI for My fellow Canadians.
