[IC] "ALPHA / OMEGA" Keycap set, sculpted DCS profile.
« on: Tue, 26 May 2015, 14:31:15 »
Hi! I've been designing a set a bit on and off, and this is what I've come up with.

See this post first please https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=72246.msg1760069#msg1760069

The set is called "ALPHA / OMEGA", inspired by the visual representation of classical physics and trigonometry which is present in my head, and I'm very much looking for feedback.

The set features sculpted ABS DCS family keycaps with a 1-1-2-3-4-4 profile, as shown in the picture, using YCC colour for legends on GPA alphas, and WA on GG mods.

Along with the base kit above, there will be child deals. These are as following:

Please note that the child deals are sort of hastily put together and are therefore probably a bit assymmetrical or off-centered. Should this IC become a group buy, all keys and legends would of course be properly spaced within the key to ensure that everything I could do to make the set of as high production quality as possible is done.

And before anyone asks, yes I copied livingspeedbumps Jukebox-set when it comes to child deals. I found his setup to be fair and well thought out, and would gladly accept it as some kind of standard.

And here's an entire album of everything composed. Yes I made the logo. http://imgur.com/a/EJXxc

As for feedback, there are currently a few things I'm uncertain about.

1. The grey colour of mods. Darker, lighter, some different shade? Thoughts on it would be appreciated.

2. There have been suggestions of making all legends WA colour, instead of YCC and WA. Thoughts?

3. Novelties. I'm stumped. There is currently an enter key with a modified Aires on it, and a tab (CHANGE) key with a lowercase Koppa on it.

Thanks for reading!

I will edit in some renders in a while. I have chemistry finals tomorrow.

OUR FIRST RENDER IS A TKL WITH COLOURS AND NOVELTIES WOOOOO!

I like the 2 tone color scheme and the novelties pack. Reminds me of Dolch. Too bad I don't like DSA :)

My bad I guess I just read it too quickly. But like I said, I like the colors.

Could you do a Poker mockup with color pack?

Looks like you are planning on using custom font legends and modifier legend designs. Be aware that each legend will cost you $45. So, about $4500 for a full set, to add to the cost of the sets. Even if you choose SP's Isotherm font legends.

yikes, maybe instead of double shot. we could get gold inlay-ed legends?
i mean $4500.. lets bump it up right?
that's a shame it is such a dramatic price jump :\

I thought it was just an example, not necessarily using custom fonts for each key. Of course the custom mods, but are we having custom alphas as well??

Holy **** I had no idea. What other printing alternatives would be doable? AFAIK dye-sub would need a colour change. Maybe I'm up for that, but I like the dark I have now.

Got any idea for novelties? I'm stumped. I now realize that Aires and Koppa were bad decisions.

Yep, thats why I included the text mods as well ;p

I like it.

I did actually whilst choosing colours think about having a dark-on-dark set, but quickly decided against it.

Note that I wasn't actually planning on having anything produced when I started working on this, I just like designing things as a hobby.

Should this set be produced, and dye sub be used, I guess my first set of colours would be more suitable

Here's a render with those colours.

The reason I originally dismissed the idea was

1. the way dark legends look on coloured caps. I didn't like it

2. There's a lot of these sets and they all fill the same purpose, I didn't want to make another. With

Quote
$4500 outside of set cost

being said, it might be more feasible to do so.

edit: would also open up pbt keycaps

I really love this, but I'm not a big DCS fan. Kinda has to be thick for me to buy ABS. If you ever decided to do SA I would be all over that ****.

I love the idea. As for the feedback:

I am fine with the choice of gray for alphas and mods.
I like YCC on alphas, but not particularly excited by white on mods. What about YCC alphas and dark font elsewhere?
I don't really care for Aires and Koppa. I would prefer some other legends instead.
Something that bothers me the most is the size of legends on the bottom row. It looks too big and doesnt match either the alphas or other keys, just kind of sits on its own.
I would prefer DSA, as DCS seems a bit boring.

I really like the classy look you've got here.  I think the set looks best without the extra color.  Interested to see where you go with it.

Something calming about the colors of this set without the colored accent keys. Makes me want to type out calm and reasoned replies to raging kids in youtube comments.

Like the set, the one child deal I would add would be a kit for unusual layouts.

1.5 Control and Alt keys, 7u spacebar, 1.75 and 2U shift keys as a start.
