Make small interesting goals, try some new things, try old things in a new way, have that affair, get some nuggets on the way home just because.

I'm concerned my new-to-me graphic card is dying. My computer shut off at 3 AM while I was asleep and wouldn't turn on until I removed the graphics card. It turned on successfully when I reinstalled it though, so it's obviously not completely ruined. This is what happened when my 760 died; the computer just shut off suddenly without warning and wouldn't power back on until I removed it.

I do run Folding@Home when I'm not at the computer, which I may just stop doing if it's killing GPUs.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

Wear and Tear, on hardware is not trivial, especially now that alot of computer hardware fall into the -Budget- electronics category.

It's Mainly the Power circuits, they're not designed for 24 hr operation, the vrms are almost always stretched.

It may or may not be the gpu's fault, the mobo could be delivering bad current, or maybe there's a leak/ short somewhere.

Point is, NEVER run folding at home, unless you got the more expensive parts which use more and better regulators.

I'd been thinking about quitting anyway to save money on the power bill. I've been running F@H 24/7 for five years, so I guess I'm at a good stopping point.

Honestly it seems like the younger generation wants people to not take them seriously and think they are stupid and incapable. I keep trying to give passes and benefits of doubt, but time and time again modern teenagers prove to me they are possibly the stupidest generation in human history, and don't give a damn who knows it.

Criticising a broad group of people. Perhaps confirmation bias?

With 2 kids born in the late-1990s I am constantly surprised and often perplexed at what they do, and do not, know.

It is true that the public education system in the US went through a colossal transformation starting in the 1970s and continuing to the present (which old goats like me consider disastrous, but that's another conversation), and whole new fields now have vital importance that did not even exist previously. My education, from the late 1950s through the mid-1970s focused on critical thinking and fostering a love of reading.

Those 2 areas have fallen by the wayside.

In particular, I feel that history and the development of human society have been hardly or poorly taught, and that modern kids have little deep understanding of "who we are and how we got here" and that, for example, consequently leaves them open to manipulation by ephemera such as social media and bogus "news".
"The Trump campaign announced in a letter that Republican candidates and committees are now expected to pay “a minimum of 5% of all fundraising solicitations to Trump National Committee JFC” for using his “name, image, and likeness in fundraising solicitations.”
“Any split that is higher than 5%,” the letter states, “will be seen favorably by the RNC and President Trump's campaign and is routinely reported to the highest levels of leadership within both organizations.”"

Seems like a thing that has repeated in history quite a bit throughout the decades.  Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Wayne's World, and Beavis and Butt-head are sudo reflections of the times in which they were aired.  I try to live by the MST3K credo.

I don't know, I think that the trajectory of education in the US was quite positive until the radical right began its assault on public education in the late-1950s in the wake of Brown vs Board of Education.

In recent decades this country has been locked in a struggle between educators and dis-educators. Monumental inequality is incompatible with universal access to education.

OOP is meh.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I meant FP as in 'functional programming', not FP as in Function Programming.  J language to me was interesting before I tried to search for external libraries.  Seems about as fun as maintaining a NetBSD system.

I let my cousin move down to my apartment because I thought I could help him turn his life around; that he needed someone he could talk to about the troubles he's been going through and learn to deal with them and give him the chance that nobody else would.

Three and a half months later I'm having to kick him out because the exact opposite happened, and I really don't know if I didn't give him enough of a chance or if he would have continued on his self-destructive cycle and by kicking him out I'm actually saving him.

I love him more than my own brothers, but I just can't decide if I did the right thing in either case.

We should just take everyone under 18 and over 60 and put 'em all on a boat and just shove it off into the middle of the ocean.

It's Reddit humor. Forced, unnatural "humor" that tries to reach for meme status without considering actual logic behind it.

Verizon wireless online activation, this is the third night in a row I've spent over an hour trying to get phone activation to work like it is supposed to.
