Awesome to see people getting their packages in the mail.  We got some modeling potential up in here.  I'm disappointed, though.  I didn't see Blue Steel from either of you.  Much disappoint. :(
Sent, when you gonna drop Magnum on us?

I'll throw on some CTRL ALT swag one of these days and reveal Magnum.  Np np.

Simply amazing!!!!1!

I keep rushing back to check out all the pics of well-deserving people getting cool keyboard swag.  Please keep posting them!

Thank you again, Geek Hack (and all of you nice gift-giver-awayers), for being so awesome.

I need to wait a bit before I try to join this gift-giving fun.  I keep distracting my CFO from adding up my keyboard expenses so far;  As much as I hate typing on my current keyboard, hers is first in the keyboard build queue ;D

Is there a way to get a list of people as they post so that those of us that want to jump in without receiving can do so and not just start a round robin thing, but get more people involved?

Is there a way to get a list of people as they post so that those of us that want to jump in without receiving can do so and not just start a round robin thing, but get more people involved?

I was thinking about how to handle this as well.  I know some people will be interested in participating, while others would rather not participate because they don't feel like they have anything they can give.  I was finding this a big hard to navigate when I was figuring out who to send stuff to.  I ended up just PMing the people and saying "if you are interested in participating in PayItForward (http://ctrlalt.io/payitforward), send me your address".  That worked, but now the people know they have something coming.  Half of the fun of this is getting mystery packages though, so this approach takes some of the fun out of it.

I was thinking about doing something similar to what I did with, http://gh60-market.swillkb.com/, where people could opt-in to PayItForward.  Obviously we would not want everyone's address published, but I think it would be cool if they could add their address and then if someone wants to send them a gift they could PM me and get the address.  I don't know if you all trust me with your addresses, but at least we would not be showing the whole internetz...

I would expect the public to be able see something like:

Willing to participate in PayItForward
======================================

---------------------------------------------------------------------
| username  | country | classified | gave address | contact         |
---------------------------------------------------------------------
| jdcarpe   | USA     | Link       | Yes          | PM swill (link) |

|                            ... etc ...                            |
---------------------------------------------------------------------

The classified link would be optional, but would help people give stuff to people that they are interested in.  Submitting an address would also be optional.  If they submitted an address then anyone could PM me to get their address so they could be surprised by the gift.  If they don't enter an address then the giver would have to PM them directly to get the address, but they would at least know that the person is interested in doing it.

Would something like this be interesting?  I could build this tonight and have it up and running tomorrow morning if this is of interest...

This would work for those that are willing to participate for future, but it would need a way to include those that already recieved so that we don't just keep piling on stuff to one or two people.

If you put that together, you can add me.

Also, not sure if people putting their name on a list takes away from the spirit of this.  Looking back now, I think it would be better to just have a list of those that received something.

Haha. Because I had my username in there and didn't want to confuse things with the 'pm swill' function, so I made up a dummy name. So that dummy is just an alias for me.

Ya, its not an easy thing to figure out a nice way to handle this.  If people have to pm me to get the address, I can try to keep track of whose addresses get requested and notify the people that someone has sent something to that person. Starting to add a bunch of manual process in this, but that is just an opportunity to get creative with software. :)

Not that I am expecting a package, but I recently moved and I would feel bad if someone sent something to my old address.. So swill's idea would definitely help with that!

Before people start spamming me with their addresses, I just want to clear something up.  I would not be collecting this information from everyone.  Each person would be able to fill out a google form with the details and I would only expose the fields I mentioned previously via a website.  Similar to how the http://gh60-market.swillkb.com/ website works.  You would click a link on the website I create.  You would then enter the details you would like to share and then you would show up in the list of people who are willing to participate.

I could have another form that would be a list of people who got stuff and they could enter that so people know that they have already participated.  As Badwrench points out, this information is also useful.

From a sender's perspective it would have been good to have a list of all those who've already been sent something, but then potential recipients could look at the list and ruin the surprise.  Though they wouldn't know what was incoming or from who, so maybe that just adds to the excitement?

personally, whilst i appreciate the work, something feels slightly off about having people sign up for this as it were

whilst i understand the point of it, i feel there is some more middle ground between it being blind and whats proposed

that being said, this isnt my thing, it is everyones, and its great to see people getting in to the spirit of it, i want it to grow organically, and if that is the way its gonna grow, more power to it

personally, whilst i appreciate the work, something feels slightly off about having people sign up for this as it were

whilst i understand the point of it, i feel there is some more middle ground between it being blind and whats proposed

that being said, this isnt my thing, it is everyones, and its great to see people getting in to the spirit of it, i want it to grow organically, and if that is the way its gonna grow, more power to it

Ya, I hear ya.  I kind of feel the same way to be honest.  Something does not feel right about signing up for this.  I will hold off on publishing anything unless there is overwhelming interest in it.  It is literally an hour of work for me to have something ready, so it is something we can decide to do later if it is wanted.

On the same page I was thinking of doing a form to allow people to post that they got something.  Maybe this is more inline with the spirit of what we are doing here.  The fields I was considering adding where Receiver, Sender and Pictures (a link to where they posted pictures of the gift).  I would suggest people post pictures in the PayItForward thread and then just post the link to the post they posted the pictures in.  This might keep some excitement around it and let people quickly click through and see a bunch of pictures of stuff people have been getting.  Not sure if that is interesting...

Sorry I am a software developer, so when I have my hammer out, everything looks like a nail.  :P

Anyone who has my address, feel free to post online for people to get.  It isn't like my address isn't public record or in the phone book.

I may not have much to send out initially, but I can def come up with something if I receive.

======================================

---------------------------------------------------------------------
| username  | country | classified | gave address | contact         |
---------------------------------------------------------------------
| jdcarpe   | USA     | Link       | Yes          | PM swill (link) |
| BunnyLake | UK      | Link       | No           | Manual          |
| dummyname | Canada  |            | No           | Manual          |
|                            ... |

Wouldn't it possible to have a system behind the page that raffle people together. I mean you fill a database with the info people put in, then the system raffle people together and send them an email with the info regarding the person they need to PIF to. That way the system could keep track of those who already received something so they would be drawn out of the raffle until everyone has something and then it could just start over. ^^

Holy s#!t!  This is freaking ridiculous!  Just got home from golfing and saw this package on the doorstep.

Opened up and found my dream set: Sanctuary!  Thank you so much suicidal_orange!  I have been wanting this set since I first saw it and am truly blown away.

Truth be told, it wasn't 100% a surprise since massdrop had to step in and ruin it by posting the sanctuary buy so suicidal had to pm me and tell me not to buy in.  It was still a huge surprise to even be told and then to open it up and see it for the first time, so awesome!
Thank you again suicidal_orange, I am super stoked.
