How about sorting them by year the board was released/built? I think you would get a very nice chronological mix without making it very technical.

The forum itself doesn't matter. I'm a member on both Geekhack, Deskthority as well as Reddit but I wouldn't want to be linked to just a single forum.

No watermarks. Unless these are put in a black area right be to the photo.
Remember the board that was given to Bunny with all the different logos etched on the back? A bit like that.

I agree. Put an acknowledgement to the different forums at the end, but just leave it with names/usernames in the book.

It would be great to have as many people as possible to participate in the book no matter which forum they come from and it. Personally I think that the photos should only include the information about the keyboard, owner, and photographer the forum is irrelevant, specially if the objective is to gather as many people as possible like the Korean community.

As soon as SamirD figures out the guidelines (submission format, structure, sections…), and everything is set up I would suggest to contact Deskthority, /r/MK and KBDmania mods to gather as many pictures as possible.

Very, very nice.  Can someone get in touch with him and ask him to submit the originals?

I sent him a message on reddit along with a link to this thread.

That was what I was thinking as well--have the forum community urls listed in the back like a 'for further reading' type of thing.

Not a bad idea, but we'll definitely have to get more photos submitted before we have to worry about structure.

Choosing a forum is definitely what I don't want to put anyone through.  I think forum names should be just as a 'for more reading' list at the end like closing credits.

Exactly my thoughts about as many people as possible.  :thumb:

Submission is original jpg in the highest resolution (submission link in first post), structure and sections is tbd since design isn't my forte and will require someone else in the community to spearhead.  I really don't see a reason why we can't go ahead and ask mods now to point us to the owners of the great photos.  The submission gallery is open and we'll need content before we really can get into layout and design.

For printing I really would suggest trying to get truly original photos (i.e. Camera RAW, tiff, EPS) if available jpgs sacrifice a lot of things that can effect print quality I can't tell you from a professional standpoint but the guy I know who publishes hates jpeg with a passion haha . This is a little reading I found searching "why not to use jpeg" and it outlines it pretty well I think.

RAW and uncompressed formats like tiff and eps are great, but they're not what most people shoot.  The problem with RAW is that it has to get into a 'processed' format like jpg for it to be usable/viewable, and there's so many variables on how to 'develop' the file that its best to leave that up to the photog.

For what it's worth, I've sold 8x10s printed off of the highest quality jpg from my who-knows-how-old now Sony DSC-F828, and people rave about the quality.  And that camera's just 8MP.  Todays cameras have much more capturing capability and megapixels, so I don't think we'll really miss anything with a high quality jpg.

You don't need a camera.  You don't even need a keyboard!  Just find great photos and let the owners know about this project to submit their great photos for inclusion in the book.  :thumb:

For the submissions that I've already made, I can easily resubmit them in any format you'd like, as we still have the RAW photos.

I don't think the orientation is set.  Also, with 'flat' binding options available, a single landscape image can span across two pages seamlessly.  I still have to look at Asukabook's reply as well as a PM with pricing in it.  I can hit all this harder when I'm back home--right now work deadlines are starting to close in on me. :(

I loved a lot of the car shots and it really made me miss the events in HSV.  But that's a different type of book!

I also just PM'd Adamski07 to request to use his album for the book.

Ì have all of my pictures on IMGur with most of them being in the original resolution.

Duck Orion

I have several other boards on my profile page but none of those are really custom boards. Just some very nice macro shots of regular or vintage boards.

I've been out of the keyboard hobby for a bit but my appetites are coming back now that I have a job (and money soon) again. :P

I like this idea!

I can help with book layout and design when the time comes. I've done a lot of that sort of thing.

As far as the book itself, I'd agree that it needs to be biggish. Especially if it's photo heavy. I know on some sites like BLURB you can do 20 pages starting at 14.99 for a small book and the price goes up depending on size, hardcover or softcover, and amount of pages.

Have made a photo book through blurb before. Was impressed with it.

And SamirD, I've got some photos on flickr that are pretty high res. I don't want to bog down the thread with them, but you can click the little flickr button on my signature and go to the keyboards album and see if there is anything you want to use.  :thumb:

There's some great photographers around here so I'm sure content won't be a big issue though!

I was. I think it's a perfect picture for a cover for a number of reasons:

Lots of switch types

Lots of profiles

Lots of different keysets

Lots of artisans

Perfectly laid out

Although it has no ISO  >:D

Love this idea! I'm definitely interested. The contents are very important and I'm sure the community has a lot of great pictures to include. I didn't read through the thread but if nobody mentioned it I think (if done right) including details on the keyboard, capset, case, artisan(s), etc would look and be awesome. For those people who would pick this book up on a coffee table and know nothing about keyboards, I think it'd be cool for them to more than just see all the different "layers" of a keyboard.

With that said:
  • I don't think it should be organized by year, switch type, or anything like that. It's a picture book not an encyclopedia.
  • I think the book should be landscape, instead of portrait. reason being that keyboards are wider than they are long
  • against watermarks, I think it has more potential to ruin the flow of the book

The cover is also very important and would be make or break for me. Not asking anyone to cater to me specifically but maybe a community vote on a cover would help. I'm definitely going to try and take some photos with my phone and try to get some of my gear in there  :thumb:

Edit: Read all the posts!

@SamirD, I just got hyperfuse in the mail. Would you like me to redo my photos with hyperfuse on the board?

I have a few projects in the works. This makes me want to finish them faster. Either way I'd put this book on my coffee table next to my masters of the universe hard copy

That Vader pic is sweet. Almost didn't notice it at first!

Also, where did you get that case for your artisans? I really need one!

I believe its on amazon or ebay. I have the same one actually. Works great, but you cant flip it over or the caps will move around in the case as the dividers dont go all the way to the top of the case.

Hey thanks for PMing me about this. It's an awesome project and I will be getting a copy for sure. I have tons of photos here so I'll try to pick my top 5 and submit them when ever I can. I usually re-size my photos down to 1000 pixels max and I always add watermark to them, but I believe I still have the raw copy of all my photos so I'll try to submit one with higher resolution. Any preferred file format or jpeg would do?

Here's some more albums of mine. Let me know which one you would want to see on this book.

Just letting you know that I might not have all the raw files for all of these photos.  :thumb:

If someone wants me to start putting blurb book together for this, let me know  :thumb: We should get a community album with hi res shots somewhere.

Some watermarks don't bother me. In fact I'm pretty used to seeing them on some peoples photos. But just listing the users in the index by page # would be just as good.

Lighting is your key, try to put it next to a window with non direct sunlight on it

Also set your iso to 100 for good mobile photography
