Board Games Thread
« on: Sat, 26 March 2016, 04:08:52 »
Hey GH,

Which board games do you guys enjoy playing?

Been getting into board games, and have been really excited about playing some:

Spyfall
Codenames
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Resistance
Cards Against Humanity + expansions (of course)
Mafia de Cuba

As you can see, I love those games with lots of social interaction, and social deduction (lying and what not). Always makes for good fun with almost any group of people, as you can get to know each other better, and figure out if you can read their lies.

What do you all enjoy playing? What are some other ones that I may enjoy? Just wanted to make a thread so we have a good place to discuss. ^-^

Check out sheriff of Nottingham. If you like the lying aspect, it's great! Haha

I second Sheriff of Nottingham. It's a very clever game in which each round a player will take the roll of the sheriff. The other players look at their hand of cards and place their chosen cards (goods) into velvet bags and pass them along to the sheriff, stating its contents. The rub is that not everything you may be giving the sheriff is legal. There may be contraband in the mix. The sheriff has to deduce whether or not the player is lying. If the sheriff believes that you are lying and opens your bag and there wasn't any contraband he owes that player gold! If the sheriff was right, that player owes the sheriff and doesn't get to place any of that contraband on his or her player board. This creates room for bluffing and double bluffing. What's even more fun is that bribes and deals can be made. It's very open ended. There's a set collection aspect of the game to so there's a element of strategy stacked on-top of the social aspect of the game. The artwork is phenomenal as well and the theme really does shine through.

There is a caveat, but it's a caveat that is true for virtually all games with a major focus on social interaction. That is, it is very much group dependent. The majority of games I have played have been loads of fun. However, that doesn't mean I haven't had a handful of not so enjoyable games either. Those less than fantastic games weren't the fault of the game but that the game didn't vibe with that group. If you have a group of friends who are also into social games then I cannot recommend it enough. It really is one of my favorite games to play. Plus, they really do have wonderful customer service.

Another game with a focus on social interaction that is enjoyable is Vault Wars. The premise of the game is simple, what happens to all of that loot adventurers have stashed away in vaults if they die? They up for auction of course! It's pretty much Storage Wars: Fantasy (I've never actually seen the show... but it isn't difficult to discern the premise.) There's some cool little mechanics going on and it comes in one of those magnetic clasp boxes.

One of my favorite social games is actually a co-op game, Mysterium. It's Dixxit but so much better. It's almost worthless to describe, you really should just watch a video review or look at pictures to see how great the game looks. Plus it's as good of a game as it looks.

I've been really into Cthulhu Realms lately. My fiancee and I play it a good bit, in fact I've never played more than two players. I really do enjoy deck building. There's something immensely satisfying when you chain together a bunch of cards. I won't say it's the best game ever made however it's one of the best games in terms of value. For $10 I have gotten a immense amount of fun from it.

There was a board/card/dice type of game that I played with friends in the late-1970s-early-1980s and really enjoyed, but I can't remember the name.
Possibly because I was always stoned when we played it ....

I never owned it, but there was a variety of alien entities that had various powers (eg "mind-readers" that could see your cards or "laser-flashers" that could blind you so that they could take any of your cards that they wanted, etc).

As I remember, the name was fairly generic and it probably had "space" or "alien" in it.

You would probably have to be over 50 to remember it, unless it gained a cult following.

I've been playing a bit of Munchkin and Dragonwood recently. Sushi Go! is always the go-to for me, though. If you like games that involve a lot of social interaction and deduction, Secret Hitler is one of my favorites.

Last Eurogame I played is Eclipse when it came out. Took me a while to learn, but one of the best I've played. I want to get the War of the Ring CE, but have no idea how to play.

I miss tabletop games. I used to have weekly game nights and tried all kinds of Euro and indie games.
Hearthstone is about as close as I get these days.

I haven't really been able to get people together to play since moving.  As a result, I've been playing board games online.

http://www.slothninja.com/ - I play indonesia here
http://www.mabiweb.com/ - Shadow of the Emperor and Year of the dragon
http://www.amarriner.com/rb/ - Roads and Boats
http://www.yucata.de/en/ - haven't really been here much lately

There are others also- very easy to get into a game and play.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS

Though haven't played it in a while... coz (a) few people around still do that stuff and (b) most people to play with don't shower and are nerd *ssholes know-it-alls endlessly debating that THEY ARE RIGHT even though the DM guide states otherwise.

But the idea of D&D and role playing... really nice.

Though there are some that might disagree, D&D isn't really a board game.  I'd make a new thread for RPGs to differentiate, personally. :)

Or, if they are, they don't live close anymore.  :(

But..but.. there are these maps / boards on which you can drop your playing character symbol / piece!

But yeah RPG probably a class of its own.

Problem with that... you open the floodgates.

I play Lords of Gossamer and Shadow and the base of that Amber, Fate Core, An Apocalypse World Variant, Delta Green, a custom system I designed for PbEM that I'm playtesting (mixes Drama System and Fate Core), Exalted, Dresden Files, and Conan.  And that's just currently  :p

Has anyone played "Evolution"? My girlfriend bought it this weekend after Demoing it at PAX, curious to see how people feel about it before I play it.

My favorite game that I played this weekend though is definitely "Secret Hitler". Werewolf-type game, with a voting mechanic that adds a lot of depth. Very fun and cool.

Also anyone play flux? Picked up an extra set of promo cards at PAX, PM me if you want em.

I have not played Evolution, but it does look very enjoyable. From what I've gathered it's a very enjoyable game. It was on sale recently and I wish I had purchased a copy.

I've played a few rounds of Secret Hitler consecutively. I enjoyed it as well. I think it handles high player-counts very well compared to a game like One Night Ultimate Werewolf. I have a print and play copy and I'll probably buy a copy once it's out.

Mysterium is one of my current favorites.
Played it 3 times in the last few months.

Before that I really liked Colt Express.

I used to enjoy 7 wonders but played too often (twice a month).

I enjoy Ticket to ride, Citadel, Pandemic, Smallworld, Carcassone and many other games.
I don't enjoy Battlestar galactica as much as I'd like too.

Every now and then Descent 2 or Last night on earth.

I love to play Streetcar.
I miss Junta, played a twice and can't find it around anymore.
I'd like to play Murder at house on the hill more often, played maybe 5 times in past 15 years.

I use to love Dominion and Dungeons Lords, but that faded.

How many plays a month do you consider "too often" for a game? I have close to forty games and subsequently have a decent enough amount of games to choose from. However, there's no game that I play twice a month that I consider to have been played "too often." Maybe if I played them every or every other day.

Depends on the game I guess.
Some games can feel very similar from one game to the other...
It also depends on how many game sessions you play in a month.

In any case playing a game in one sessionand in the next would feel a bit too much.
Otherwise the max would be 2 times per month on a weekly session basis, if I enjoy the game.

Do you have a large collection? It would seem by necessity that you would have to have a large and diverse collection to be able to keep games fresh at that rate.

Been playing Zombie Dice with my daughter lately.  Hopefully I can get family game night going again and get to play more games. :)

Do you have a large collection? It would seem by necessity that you would have to have a large and diverse collection to be able to keep games fresh at that rate.

I have about 40 games, 10 of wich are still unopen for lack of time (and courage) for reading rules before game sessions.
Most of my boardgaming friends have at least 10 games each (mostly different).
A few of my friends have more games than I do (each year they buy a few at the Cannes international gaming festival).
I even have a few friends who started their publishing company (Ludically), or publish games thru other companies like (LB).
I don't see them much anymore as we stopped going to a gaming club where we met, but it was super cool to play with their prototypes.

Note that bg is not my main hobby, I'm into table top rpg (have about 150 books and my gaming friends between 50-100)...

I forgot to mention a game I like a lot "Tales of the Arabian nights".

I've picked up a few games on sale this week including Star Wars Risk, Homeland, and Castellion. I'm not a fan of Risk, though I've heard great things about Star Wars Risk and Fry's had it for 50% off. I haven't managed to have a chance to play an opponent but looking through the rules I'm not sure I would compare it to traditional Risk. Homeland was $10 with shipping. I am wary of licensed titles but Gale Force Nine has a good reputation and from what I've read it's a good game. Castellion has been on my wishlist for awhile, so I'm happy to add it to my collection

I'm not a big fan of reading rules either. I find that many rule books aren't exactly well written. As a result I have a handful of games on my shelf that I've ever played.

That's really cool! I hope you have the opportunity to reunite. It's exciting to see games as they lumber along from stage to stage closer to completion. My fiancee's uncle works in the gaming industry and it's enjoyable to see his projects coming to fruition.

Table top games are fantastic. It's hard to find a group to play with though, in my experience. It's easy to get people to play a board game. Much more difficult to make the leap to table tops.

I've heard amazing things about Arabian Nights. The story telling element looks like such a blast.

I never had a problem finding players for table top RPG.
However it is more difficult to find players you like spending 4-5h strait every week.
Board games don't have that problem as much, you can have fun even with people you don't enjoy that much.

There isn't as much 'story telling' as in other games like Once upon a time for instance, the is a lot of 'story reading' however.
It is kind of like reading aloud very loose 'gamebooks', one for each player.
But I like the stories!

Has anyone played Dune Imperium? I’ve been meaning to try it out, but haven’t had the chance just yet.

I’m really hoping it lives up to its source material

I haven't played it but it looks similar to Terraforming Mars aswell as 7 wonders which I have played and both are very fun although need a few play throughs to really get the hang of it. If you do get it please give us a review! :)
Very busy with studies atm.

I actually haven't played either Terraforming Mars or 7 wonders, so this'll be a new experience for me.

I have an opportunity to play Dune in the near future, so I'll keep this thread in mind

I bought Terraforming Mars last year for Christmas for my family - I played them youtube tutorial - that was it. They dont want to play it with me. Game is lying on tv table since December! :(
It is so beautifully made game and sounds interesting, but I dont have anyone I could play it with.

You can actually play it solo, although that is not maybe not too exciting ;) I also looked up the youtube tutorials first, looks really complicated but really isnt if they have played settlers of catan or similar before

We play Catan and Stone Age all the time. We also have Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride. I hope I get them to play Terraforming Mars this year:)

Finally got a chance to play Dune!

Some thoughts:

  • If you read the book, you wont really have an advantage but the flavor text / mechanics will make much more sense. It's generally such a flavor win; one of the few games I've played that stays true to the source material and embed that flavor into actual mechanics
  • Barter barter bater. Though you don't have to, you are completely within your rights to make deals / arrangements. It makes the game far more fun (IMO). It can also be very lucrative.
  • Pay attention to your faction. Each faction has a different play style, and you'll go much further if you lean into it.
  • It can move pretty slow when you're new. Be warned
  • You're going to have to play a few times to get it right. First play through, you'll pretty much be just getting used to the mechanics
  • Combat is really simple when you have some information about your opponent, but frustratingly difficult if they have a grip full of unknown cards.
  • Information is everything, regardless of faction. The information trade is lucrative, and you'll go further when you have your ear to the ground. Observe what folks are buying/playing/wasting each turn. "Future sight" is overpowered when used correctly.
  • Learn the win cons. This seems obvious but each faction has their own win con. It's pretty easy to end in a stalemate when you don't have a gameplan. Or maybe a stalemate is your win con...  ;D

Any of you old-timers remember Cosmic Encounter? I played it in the late-1970s-early-1980s and really enjoyed it.

Going got come in and ask if anyone in here is familiar with Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid?

I haven't gotten to play since COVID - which sucks. Sitting on PR In Space and PR Zeo expansions without a chance to play them (much less have it *all* painted)

I need to brush the dust off my figures and finish with paint haha.
