You'll hear complaining when I'm at my friend's house and forced to use his 3 year old Saitek Eclipse II. I didn't know such mushiness was possible :O

That lens is pretty crazy. Looks like it would fit over his head!

People buy $300 fountain pens, $50,000 audio cables, $5000 lenses. More power to them. Most days I'd be happy to afford a $15 steak.

I was staying at a resort on Maui and Madonna was there at the same time, a dude was up on a balcony snapping photos across toward her room with a huge lens.  He'd leave it on the tripod and disconnect the body to run inside periodically then would reappear, snap the body on and take more pics.  He must have been uploading to TMZ.

I was on Kauaii with Tiger Woods, once. I declined to sleep with him. It was before I knew there was a line.

What's the difference between Roy Rogers and Walt Disney?

...

Well, Tiger Woods, but Walt Disnae!

Hang on, I may have messed up that punchline.

What's the difference between Ray Kroc and Walt Disney. Kroc died of a heart attack (really that's no surprise), and Walt smoked too much of them ciggies.

Either Walt was stupid or loved smoking too much. Either way, he should have known he was going to die from such stupidity.

PS: Ub Iwerks drew Mickey Mouse, not that imposter Disney.

Just scored 2 new lenses.

Sigma Superwide II, reputed not to work except wide open on digital bodies, works perfectly... cheap 24mm prime goodness, sharp as I need it to be.

80-200 2.8 L (Precursor to the legendary 70-200 208 L IS)  for very little money.

24mm Sigma... free (It needed de-fungus-ing, and now works perfectly, with full aperture control, contrary to every review I've ever read when it's on a digital body.... though I'm wondering if it's because it's on an old D60).

80-200 2.8 L for the  Kishy approved price of £120! Perfect condition too.

and yup.. Canon.

And I'm expecting an M42-->EOS adaptor in the post so I can use my beloved Pentacon 300/4 that has bokeh to die for.

EOS 1 35mm of some sort... It looks like my original EOS 1 in fact...

If it is, they are solid indeed. That, with the Battery grip (8x AA weighs a bit though!) is still a staple of my photography.

Very Very nice.  I sold my Full frame gear a while back after folding my studio. I got paranoid taking it out, as that, with white glass on the end of it, and living in a decidedly bad area, got far more attention than I was comfortable with.

I'm fine with that (Usually got me into the press pen, regardless of my possession of a press pass). It's when decidedly dodgy people "casually" comment on how much it's worth that you decide to move on. After an incident with someone attempting to deprive me of it, it got sold. I came off the better, but that was this time, there was only one chav, and I knew that my 1DS was stronger than his head. I wasn't risking there being a next time. He got concussion and a 3 month sentence though. Made me grin when I saw it in the local paper, as they published my photo of him out cold on the floor with comments about there being no need for a lineup. I didn't even invoice them for it.

Yikes.  I'm a little gun shy with my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L anyway, but I hadn't really thought of anybody blatantly trying to take it right out of my hands.  Of course, I have insurance on everything... depending on the situation, I probably wouldn't resist much so long as they let me keep my memory card.  I would like to get a lens sock though.

I've never tried taking my gear to an event.  A friend of mine used to work for Tickets Plus (small competitor to Ticket Master) and told me many events would not allow any kind of SLR - that was 5-6 years ago though, before consumer DSLRs became so popular.  At any rate, I never wanted to risk having to leave it all in a vehicle should I be turned away at the door.

I always recommend this book:

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson

It sounds like you might be looking more for information specific to that model, but that book really helped me understand the hows and whys of photography.

Not really a "canon guy" (not because I care about brands, but it just happens I spent all my money on nikon **** first) but I know the crew on the Sony Talk forum @ dpreview are the folks who really got me interested in what was going on with MY camera. The Nikon forum there has be a similar boost (less so as I have grow into my own). It might be worth it to hop on the dpreview forums to take a look. I find they are similar to geekhack, there are some seriously well informed people on there. Also, the do rein in the trolls a bit better than most forums.
The other thing they have there are the challenges. Back in the day we used to have to host our STF challenges at pbase and have people vote through the forum thread, but now they have a great challenge system that is fully self contained. Challenge can be a great way to both interact with the photography community at large, share your work, get critiques AND - most importantly - get ideas n' get shootin'.

Thanks for the info, I have been following the forum over @dpreview for awhile now, and it is amazing how they throw around lens numbers and spec's.  Have learned alot, and already preordered my book from D. Busch, so that should be helpful as well.

Like you said, and Ripster told me much earlier, just gotta get out and shoot a bunch.

Thanks again............

It might be worth getting a copy of the instruction manual if one isn't included. I haven't bought a new camera for a while, but the old Canon manuals were awesome - not only guides to the camera but a pretty complete training course in all aspects of photography. Albeit rather 'dry' in delivery.

Just to annoy you...

Yes, it's mine, and yes, I use it. An Ensign Ful-Vue, Pre TLR. It takes standard 120 rollfilm. I also rock this (Same film type) when the situation calls for it (Not my picture).

Bronica SQAM

Sometimes
, old can be good. My 35mm EOS1 is about 20 years old now (Mine was '89/'90-ish), and regularly gets bashed about on dusty derelict abandoned sites. Still works perfectly, but it gets regular servicing and is cleaned properly, inside and out, when done shooting.

No Luck here either.

I know the photog for the local rag, I'll see if he can point me in the right direction. Mugger was the term used in the article, but that turns up nothing. The local rag doesn't do funny headlines. News is serious business here.

I need one. Epic picture fail today in a Mine. Lighting it is a huge challenge (15 5W Cree LED's between us though!), and the first 3 shots were fine. As AF has a tendency not to lock on it total darkness, I was Setting it on Infinity, and pulling it back a touch. More experience/Guesswork than anything. I must have knocked it moving the camera, as every other picture was out of focus in a big way. Autofocus has made me lazy, I really should have checked it at least every few shots.

focusing in low light is always tricky, usually a focus assist lamp helps from a flash device

I would love it if an AF Assist could reach that far. Have a look in Here. The place is enormous, You need very high powered torches to light it up, and 5-30 second exposures. Manual focus, and knowing what you want in focus is how you do it. But in low light, for spaces not as silly large as this, yeah, they work fine, as long as there is some contrast for it to lock onto.

oh yeah AF assist is kind of useless in that place, only thing you can do is use a small aperture

Some cameras have a depth-of-field preview mode that stops down to the intended aperture and strobes the flash so you can see exactly what you'll get. Sadly this feature is often dropped on many so-called 'pro-am' models.

The solution is to stop down, but unless you have a tripod that just makes the low light problem even worse.

And/or use a wide angle lens, they have greater depth of field. Once you get under 20mm focal length, it is barely worth focusing.

24mm lens was used in there.

As I was light painting, I just set a 5-30 second exposure, and off I went. The screen on the D60 is so small, you have no idea of what is in focus. Tripod is a given in a mine. No usable shots without one if you happen to be a human being.

I have some kind of 5 megapixel Kodak easyshare camera that I've been using for years and is very good. I was thinking of buying a new camera, but I recently got a Droid Incredible phone which has an 8 megapixel camera that I've been quite happy with. I recommend it, since the price for the phone is pretty much what you'd spend on a decent new digital camera.

I just wanted to clarify this, as I feel it is a little misleading.  It has more to do with POV (Point of View) than the focal length.  Given the same subject, background and aperture, and regardless of focal length, the DoF would be equal if the subject takes up an equal percentage of the frame (i.e. constant magnification of the subject.)  This isn't what you would normally observe since you're not liking to move forward when shooting with a wide angle or move back with a telephoto.

e.g. You can get the same DoF with 20mm at 1 meter that I would get with 200mm at 10 meters.

Oddly enough, since Point-n-shoot cameras have small apertures (even those that are equated to f/2.8 or larger), they have incredibly deep DoF (and are thus very forgiving.)  It seems that the trade off is ISO noise though, since the imaging sensors are also smaller.
