Title: Model M vs. F Spacebars
Post by: y11971alex on Sun, 17 January 2016, 19:58:31
Is the Model M spacebar lighter than the unmodified F (AT) spacebar?

Sure, the XT and AT spacebars are a mile long and have weird "under-carriages" for stabilizers.

The F-122, on the other hand, is the same size as the M spacebar and feels lighter.

Same thing with the Unsaver space bar, and while the Xtant does use an M spacebar, it requires more work and modding to make the stab wire work.

What style does the 4704's use?

the F XT spacebar is a monster. whenever i switch from any keyboard the the F XT, i will consciously have to push the spacebar down with enough force until i am used to it again.
i presume the AT spacebar is no different.
the F122, like fohat mentioned, is a different story. very light! :)

Same style as the M spacebar. Would do a weight comparison but my 4704's spacebar is a PITA to reseat sometimes.

My experience is that the terminal Fs (F-122, 4704, Unsaver) have spacebars physically similar to standar M but use thinner stabilizer wires that attach through holes in the spacebar underside rather than "C" shaped clips, and the hold-downs pressed into the front plate are much smaller with narrower mouths. The wires are also shorter, the M wires slide up very close to the base of the barrels when full depressed.

Pictures always help.  Top one is Model M, bottom two are Model F - could be F122 or 4704 (they are the same).

My F122 does Oo . And predictably, it's broken! xD

After all of these things that I have re-built, I never realized that the F had those little stand-off legs at the front until I looked at this photo.
Obviously they keep it from going down as far as the M, and that is why the tabs are farther forward on the F.
Live and learn.
