Realforce R1 vs R2 opinions on the case design?
« on: Sat, 08 September 2018, 10:52:45 »
Hello guys i wonder what you guys think of the new designed Realforce boards case design wise.
Am i the only one that dislikes the smaller sized bezel? I think the Realforce 87u big boi top bezel looks nicer and it makes it look like a tank and you can also put a pencil or other stuff on it  :).
What do you guys think of this new design?

i have a pretty big soft spot for the uniqueness and charm of the R1 body, and for some reason i don't really like the standard bottom row of the R2. maybe because it adds to its genericness.

i like the R2 though, it looks pretty crisp, and also looks solid. i'm yet to type on one yet however.

I have Topre keyboards with both cases and I prefer the old school design. As much as I love the Realforce RGB, the one thing I don't love about it is its case (including the fact that it doesn't come in white).

I think the R2 design is better looking but I think the R1 design is better quality.

I got to try the R2 when I was in Japan last week. It felt very "gamery". I prefer the old one.

How many plastic cases out there are designed to be full of rounded corners like that? It's way more unique.

I'm just an OG kind of guy. I like the old, classic look of the R1 better.

Have to agree with most so far...

I didn't like the Realforce look at first because that extra bit on top was meh..but you get used to it and the rounded corners, etc, just look really nice.

The R2 will be great IMO and I'm looking forward to getting one...but it does look very generic.

I think the newer case looks better, but if it has the quality of the RGB, then it's a step down from the old Realforces.  I don't like how there's so much play in the front of the RGB's case.  You can grab the front edges of teh case and slide it back and forth while the keyboard sits solidly on the desk because the top case is so flimsy.  Personally, I think the Type Heaven has the best combination of styling and build quality of all the Topre keyboards.

I don't have an RGB but the normal RF cases can do that too because they're held together with clips...But the actual build quality is excellent.

People get too caught up in lots of things they associate with build quality but don't necessarily mean it has it.

I don't know the exact logic behind the clips...but because the keyboard has some play it can get moved around and has some give which means it isn't going to break.  Keyboards put together without any give will put pressure on where they're held together when moved or banged around a bit...which is why you get stripped screws or screw holes...I don't know if this is really the case but generally there is a reason why a Japanese companies designs something the way they do..it isn't because they're being cheap or lazy...

* Soft edges are friendly edges.
* Glossy plastic on computer peripherals should have died out in 2010.
* Indicator LEDs are best in windows at the corners of keys, or at the centre of the keyboard, or not be present at all.
* 1.5u and 1u mods with 6u space bar is the best bottom row.
* Round keycap corner — round case corner is best. Sharp keycap corner — round case corner is second best. Round keycap corner — sharp case corner looks bad.

The older design was classy and clean. It could perhaps have been improved by making the side borders wider and the top border narrower, but that's it.

I haven't tried the R2, but definitely prefer the design of the R1.

For a TKL board I think the new design looks better, the side profile stands out in a nice way. Fullsize the old version looks better because of the Realforce labels.

They both look quite good. The new one somehow seems both more modern and more classic at the same time, to me.

Is there anywhere selling them?

I think you can only get them from amazon.jp at the moment.

The R1 case is gorgeous.

The R2 makes me want to cry.  So ugly.  Why Topre, why?
