I still can't believe this is happening, but I'm happy to report that for the month of November you can participate in a Group Buy for my design of the Galaxy Class, Star Trek TNG-inspired, keyset from Roddenberry Entertainment. (And, if you need a color-coordinated keyboard + CNC housing, I happen to be making some.) Both group buys run for the length of November. Both keycaps and artisan are Made in the USA.

Check out this video they did about it on Tested!

Here are a few glamor shots:

The keyboard + housing in custom finish available on my shop is a nice complement becuase it is evocative of the textured tan computer housing seen across TNG.

There are effectively three sets available in various combinations: TKL (Core), Numpad, and Alternates (thanks to livingspeedbump for helping me figure this one out!), plus the artisan.

All the details are available on the Roddenberry Group buy page, and you can check out the GeekHack Interest Check thread that led to it, but as always feel free to ask any questions here in this thread, or by emailing me. :)

Is the lumpy anodize texture what we're to expect on the Topre RealForce TKL keyboard?

Not unless you ordered the "galaxy console" powder coated option, which intentionally adds a textured finish.

Thanks, Lt. Commander! ;) This has been a long time coming, but I'm so glad we finally worked out all the details. Now I just hope we hit the MOQ!

Questions?
You can follow along at the keyboard community discussion thread on GeekHack.org or you can contact us directly for help.

Is the buy page on the Roddenberry site supposed to link to this thread?

And with over a third of the MOQ met in the first few hours, I'd be surprised if this doesn't make it to production.

Interesting. I don't have anything to do with that; I just sent them the weight and dimensions and it's calculated automatically. Maybe there is an error in their data though. What cost are you seeing, and to what destination?

I mean the First Class is doable, but... I tried two locations via Paypal, one in Utah and one in the UK. Both were the same prices.

EDIT: This is the UK price. Apologies for the confusion. Paypal was just not updating with the Stateside address. Understandable for the UK. Sorry, move along.

USPS First Class Package International -- 7 to 21 business days -- $ 23.88
USPS Priority Mail International -- 6 to 10 business days -- $ 52.61
USPS Priority Mail Express International -- 3 to 5 business days -- $ 65.91
UPS Worldwide Expedited -- $ 169.41

I saw your reply to my mentioning the gray numpad icons.  But did you realize part of the legends in the previews are also gray instead of black?

Nav Lock is black, but Div, Mult, Sub, Sum, Cal, Origin, and Point are gray.  Just confused me for a second thinking that those were grayed out and part of some other kit.

I'll buy as soon as the next paycheck hits the bank.  :thumb: :thumb:

I just tried to check out and my USPS Priority price to a USA address is $9.13.

Those international prices seem right to me. Maybe when you had the address in Utah in place you were still set to a foreign country?

Oh, yes. The idea there is that Nav Lock is sort of a conceptually separate key that "turns on" the rest of the nav keys. Admittedly a subjective choice, but I kind of like how it looks.

Thank you! :D

I'm not familiar with the recent issues, but I will say that the guys who work at Massdrop are, at a personal level, really awesome--and for quite a long time we seriously explored working with them on this GB. The only reason we opted not to in this case was that we wanted to avoid having to mark this up too much. (Since pricing from SP is already pretty high so I wanted to keep the margins as tight as possible on this one.)

haha. I'm glad you think so! "Gently controlled chaos" is probably closer to my experience of organizing projects like this, but generally things seem to work out with folks ending up happy, which is ultimately all matters to me. Well, also: Star Trek keycaps!  :D

Thanks! Norm is a super awesome guy, and he obviously shares my deep love of TNG, so has been nice to bump into him several times this past year. I actualy only found out he was interested in the keyset very indirectly when a friend saw that Norm tweeted a picture of my keyset, which was out at an RPF party, and told me about the tweet.

Thanks for making this a reality!

A quick question on pricing.
Adding either Number Pad or Alternates raises price by $40
But adding Number Pad and Alternates raises price by $90

No big deal, just weird.

I'll echo a concern brought up recently in the IC thread: None of the sets includes non-homing F and J keys, meaning you'd end up with 4 homing keys as a Dvorak/Colemak user. Can this be fixed?

I think it's because they were originally going for 99$ core and had to bump it to 109$ to keep from losing money; but they were probably making enough off the add-ons that they weren't concerned with raising their prices. So originally, it would have been a 50$ bump either way (100$ for both). You're right though, it does seem kind of weird now.

Oh, yes, I think that's what happened. We were less worried about losing money on the other sets, so we just left those prices where they were.

Thanks so much for making this happen. Bought immediately when I found it. My wife even said that she would force me to because she wouldn't want to deal with me complaining about how I missed the chance to grab star trek caps 😁

I was thinking I'd use the federation insignias as ĹÄ and Ö to make up for no nordic letters. And I switch a lot to American when I work anyway so the combo will work out fine I think :)

Congratz !  :)

It seemed to me that the MasterKeys S PBT version did not fit exactly in your custom box (it was too large).
Did you adapt the dimensions of the latter compared to R1-2.5 ?

I thought that the masterkeys S PBT version doesn't fit exactly in your custom case. You modified

Correct. It required a few modifications, so this is technically a new case design, but overall it should basically look the same other than the added LED holes. If you want a finish other than the tan textured powder coat, Originative has them all month here.

I contacted Roddenberry Support about the lack of non-homing F and J keys and here’s the reply:

”Hello [eMps],

F and J without homing bump will be included in the alternates set and that their omission in the mock-up was just an error.

Roddenberry Support”

I asked them when the mock-up will be updated and I’ll edit this post if they reply.

EDIT: They've updated one of the mock-ups.

I'll likely get around to it at some point, but in the meantime all 2.5 of you Dvorak/Colemak users out there can just use your imaginations and trust that you'll get your smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom F and J keys. ;P

Just a quick update: we're currently at 259 and about half way through the month. Thanks everyone for your support. I met several GB participants on Saturday; thanks for sharing your enthusiasm with me! Stuff like that is so encouraging. :D

I also gave away a boxed set in the raffle this weekend at the NorCal/Silicon Valley meet-up, but I had to leave before the raffle itself to catch my flight to DesignerCon; did anybody watching this thread here end up with it? Whoever has it has the only existing set and box in the world at this point other than the guys at Tested.

I actually reached out to them to see if they wanted to partner with me to supply keyboards for this (in which case I would design a customer aluminum case to fit their plate), but they never got back to me. I haven't seen inside a WASD before, but chances are very low of it happening by chance to fit a case designed for a random Cooler Master plate (which itself happens to be different from all other CM plates I've seen). Sorry about that.

That's a shame they didn't respond to you. I think that would have been a great partnership.

I asked them when the mock-up will be updated and I’ll edit this post if they reply.

I'll likely get around to it at some point, but in the meantime all 2.5 of you Dvorak/Colemak users out there can just use your imaginations and trust that you'll get your smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom F and J keys. ;P

I have a hard time trusting what I cannot see :). I’m too skeptical to take the word of an unnamed support employee, but now that it’s corroborated by you, I feel more optimistic. I and 1.5 others thank you!

ICYMI this the keys without homing bumps in the Alt set are updated now on the Rodd.com.

PS: 10 days left, and nearly 200% funded.

In case you overlooked it, the F and J are shown in the 'Core + Alternates + Numpad' image, but not the 'Core + Alternates' image.

Ugh. Good point. Unfortunately this process involves going through like four people to get the graphic changed and info gets lost in translation sometimes. Oh well. Take my word for it; if you order an alternates set you'll get F and J keys, whether or not with a numpad. :)

Yeah, I noticed right after the Core+Alt+Numpad was updated and notified support about the Non-Numpad-Alternates oversight but they haven’t responded :/ I’m fairly content with one of the graphics having been updated though, so I won’t press the issue.

Just a quick note to say that there are only 4 days left. Happily, we've more than doubled the MOQ.

For whatever it's worth: this is extremely likely to be the last time this set is ever produced, so if Galaxy Class is something you were planning on ever wanting, please join now or forever hold your peace.  :p

Ends tonight midnight PST.

Thanks again everyone for your support! Can't wait to get these orders off to the various respective factories and get manufacturing underway!

No worries. I hate to bug people twice, but I forget stuff in my own sea of browser tabs all the time myself, so I know sometimes a nudge is required for those who fully intended to participate. I also know because in past GBs I always hear from people the day after who just missed it and have to scramble to figure out how to squeeze them in. ;)

Ends tonight midnight PST.

Order page says it ends at 9:57 PM PST (which is a rather strange time IMO), rather than midnight. I'd suggest not waiting until the 11th hour to get in.

Also, I'm sure my heart's gonna break that I can't afford to get Core, Numpad and the artisan all at once. :( Think I'm gonna go for Core only and call it a day.

Yes, I think it was 16+ weeks, and that was explicitly just an estimate; they weren’t willing to commit to any specific timeline.

Is this why I haven't seen the money come out of any of my accounts? I paid through my PayPal but all my linked accounts are still the same. I'd hate to miss out on this because of some PayPal glitch. I have receipts from PayPal and Roddenberry Shop, but I've seen no movement of funds and it's worrying me.

I would email them about this. I was charged (and money moved) day 1; they also say:

Minimum Order Quantity is 150. If 150 pre-orders aren’t received by the close of the pre-order period, no keysets will be produced and all orders will be refunded.

They wouldn't need to refund if people weren't charged.

Just emailed Roddenberry and they resent my email confirmation. Went back through my PayPal history and apparently my last two PayPal transactions took one day and two days, respectively, to clear. Never realized before. Strange, although one was a /r/mechmarket trade and the other was a SwitchMod order, so maybe that's normal. I guess I'll keep checking over the next couple days.

Thanks for the replies.

Edited to add:

They wouldn't need to refund if people weren't charged.

That's just it, there wasn't a charge and then a refund; there just weren't any charges anywhere at all.

Alrighty, So I'm just about 3 weeks old into this hobby and was previously elated to have just today discovered this kap set, and am now saddened by the fact that I seemingly am unable to acquire it (may have shed a literal tear Q-Q).

Was this confirmed the last time it will be sold? Am I doomed to wander the continuum of the secondary market and hope for the best? Will I ever be able to type with the badassery of Worf?!

But seriously, I am so enamored with this set, I do hope they run it again, but I will most definitely acquire this set.

You could try emailing them to see if they could squeeze you in. I believe they are ordering a few extras.

Thank you! I can only hope they have room! Finding so many kap sets I adore, and it's killing me not to be able to just -get- them.

I also can't say how Stunningly executed the design is! I had never even thought that the LCARS could translate to Keycaps, you did a phenomenal Job, I can't even begin to imagine other console types and fandom setting could go onto boards. I'm still learning an absolute ton about these, and hopefully building my own in short time.

I'm happy to report that it looks like I'll be able to go up to Signature Plastics and film some footage of these being produced! I'll keep everyone posted as it gets nearer the time.

that's pretty cool

Only those previously stated. As soon as I hear anything more specific from Signature Plastics, I’ll let everyone here know.

My pleasure. :)

Incidentally, I have no new date estimate, but I did get confirmation yesterday that SP received the PO and payment from Roddenberry some time ago and that they have already begun the molding process.

I think Roddenberry may have a few extras available in their shop this summer after the GB has shipped. Maybe sign up on their email list?

Incidentally, by way of an update: injection molding is nearly complete and dye sublimation and packaging manufacture both start soon.

He did send out a quick update via email list:

I just got back from Signature Plastics where I filmed lots of awesome 4k footage of them finishing up the Galaxy Class run that I helped produce for Roddenberry.com. Those should ship from Roddenberry late spring, and I should have video up before then.

Hopefully we'll get some video of sweet keycap making.  :p

I believe that one is double-shot. As I recently observed in person, the dye sublimation process is incredibly painstaking compared to the way the double-shot machines spit out the pre-legended caps.

It'll take me a bit of time to edit the footage I shot into a video, but here is a quick preview in the form of a few photos I took while I was there.

All the keys have been molded and dye sublimation is still happening now. The last thing to be complete will likely be the boxes, which are currently being manufactured and then have to make their way to SP, so things are still several weeks out from shipping.

Thanks, Puddsy.  :D

Incidentally, the legends on this round look amazing and crisp, which is particularly excellent given the fine details on the UFOP logo. They've recently tweaked their dyesub process yet again at SP and it's unlike anything I've seen on Galaxy Class in previous rounds, or any other set for that matter.

Seriously. I was amazed. I'm very familiar with what previous runs of the set have looked like (quite good), and I could instantly tell from looking at it this time around they totally took it to another level. This was a pleasant surprise, since I was a little worried about some of the tiny details on the logos, but that has turned out not to be an issue at all. I don't really know what they're doing differently from a technical standpoint (they were a little cagey on the details), but it certainly seems to be working.

Here is the video I shot at SP, which includes (toward the end) the dyesub process on the Galaxy Class sets. My favorite part is their custom robotic hold-down jig that prevents warping of the large modifier keys as they cool.

Incidentally, the packaging is slated to be completed and inspected this week, so SP should have the boxes with a week or two. Slowly but surely, we're nudging close to shipping day. :D

That was my favorite process to watch too, actually, even though it doesn't involve such sophisticated machinery as the injection molding process. I love that the person who loads the keys into the jig and then into the dyesub machine does it basically key-by-key. I watched her meticulously check each one over. I think doing that all day would make my eyes would go crossed (or my brain crazy), but she seemed pretty jovial about it. :)

I kept wondering if that lady who spends all day with keycaps thinks we’re crazy for obsessing over them.  Also thought it was crazy hat they’re all hand trimmed.

And it looks like the longer keycaps get a special clamp down treatment after dyesub to prevent warping while cooling.. again all by hand.

Very interesting video.  Thanks for sharing.

Any updates please?

I'm happy to report that I just spoke to Melissa earlier this morning and they're being placed into boxes at SP as I write this. Assuming Roddenberry's fulfillment center is able to turn things around quickly (and they usually are), this would mean shipping to participants perhaps late this week, or sometime next week.

Fortunately, I think this is just a one-off error at the factory—such errors are known to happen from time to time. Roddenberry will be contacting you tomorrow to arrange a replacement.

Love the set, can't wait to throw them on my Norbatouch this weekend, but something caught my eye once I looked at the second tray in the box...
Were the lighter colored legends on the numpad modifiers an oversight when making the graphic on the numpad numbers lighter for r2? Several of them are darker legends (0,00, SUM, and NAV LOCK), it is noticeable in the graphic on the site now that I know what I'm looking for after seeing them in person, just seemed like an odd design choice if it was done on purpose.

Got mine today. Really nice set.  Crisp, bold legends.  Colors are so perfectly harmonized. Packaging is really cool, too.

Sold out in under an hour, although it didn't seem like there were more than 20 extra sets I'd reckon (based on how long it took to sell out when there were 10 left)
Jetfire | Mech 27 v1 | Mira SE | Singa | Orion 2.5 | Eo87 | Lubrigante | MGA | IBM F XT | AEKII | Lightpad | Exent | Dolphin Rev 2 | F1-8x | Mr Suit

I'm in the EU as well. Have you received a shipping update yet? I'm starting to become slightly anxious that I've not had one (now that people are actually receiving their sets)

Just checked Roddenberry Shop. As of this posting, there is 1 full set + alternates available on the site. Just a heads-up for anyone watching this thread!

I love you man, I hoped in the basic kit honestly, but I had to take it, surely the customs will be very bad, anyway thanks for the report, you made me a happy child.

Received my Enterprise artisan today. It looks great! I am now the proud owner of an Enterprise keycap and an Enterprise pizza cutter.

Howdy,

Just received my keyset the other day (it's awesome). However, I didn't realize that the 2.25u Shift (Pattern Enhance) key only came in the Alternate keyset package. I'm using the keyset on a 68% board and have extra keys (All the ISO set, F keys, r-alt, r-menu and r-control keys), so if there's a key or keys you'd be willing to trade let me know!

Cheers

If it helps, I didn't receive a shipping update for 6 days ("pre-shipment" was the phrase used on the USPS website), then I got one saying it was 2 days away.  But I'm in the US, so I'm unsure about EU

Finally got my caps! All the way to scandinavia. Was planning on putting them on my southpaw but that has another few months delay so i put some on my tada68 while i wait. Nevermind my weird layout, just trying things around  :D

Thanks for awesome pics and feedback, everyone!

For any shipping issues/concerns, do reach out to Roddenberry. I unfortunately don't have any insight or control when it comes to how their fulfillment warehouse operates, though I do know from my own experience that sometimes Shopify ship confirmations are bounced by some servers thinking they are spam. If you haven't gotten a ship notification yet, your order is still probably on its way—but no harm in emailing Roddenberry to check if there is any concern.

The legends on my numpad and surrounding keys (besides navlock) are a somewhat faded black compared to the legends on the other keys - is that expected? Loving the set overall but the faded numpad looks a bit odd.

Ignore me. Found the previous question in the thread.

199$ without the artisan (+49$) during preorder. I think it went up a bit for extras when they actually shipped.

I believe that these are the 10-20 extras we had originally planned. They trailed the resin sets in being offered because we were waiting for the last batch of boxes for them.

Well boys and girls, I did it.  After all these years and all of these keyboards and all of these keycaps... I broke down and bought my first ever artisan.   :thumb:

I missed the boat on the original one.  With 25 yrs Star Trek Voyager happening in 2020, any chance this set will be re-released?

In the meantime, I played with KLE  ;D

Missed the journey on this one. Any plans on releasing this in SA or GMK profiles?? Colors will be amazing in SA and awesome kits can be designed.
