ENJOYPBT KURO / SHIRO
This is an Interest Check for a PBT dye-sublimated keyset which combines the legends from the popular Enjoypbt Black Japanese (https://kbdfans.cn/products/pre-orderenjoypbt-black-japanese-dye-sub-keycaps) set and the more recent Enjoypbt Black on White (https://kbdfans.cn/collections/new-arrival/products/gbenjoypbt-black-on-white-with-icon-mods-159keys).
The kit is largely based on the Enjoypbt Black on White set with the revised legends and icon modifiers.
All the Japanese legends have been redone with a slightly different font than that of the Japanese Black set.
I will also use thinner legends than my previous sets and also bundle some reverse dye-subbed accents as shown in the kit preview.
Enjoypbt have prepared tools to facilitate reverse dyesubbing for this set which is something that is currently unique to this set.
The colour of the white will be a little less beige than GMK's WS1 white but should retain a similar brightness. The current samples match WS1 but I am currently looking at a Pantone colour that is more to my liking.

11/10/2018 UPDATE: After looking at the survey, I have started working on some options regarding a Japanese mod kit. Once that is ready, I will be posting it here and opening up another google form to see what your guys preferences are. From the short while that I've worked on the Japanese kit, I've already formed an opinion on which combinations work well but I haven't decided what will be part of the base kit and what would be an addon. I'll also be posting documentation showing how I arrived at some of the design choices.
17/10/2018 UPDATE: Added a google form about the International ISO kit. I will be leaving this open till the end of the week unless I don't receive enough responses, in which case I will leave it up for longer and work on the other kits before coming back to this. Also added individual kits.
20/10/2018 UPDATE: Added the International kit to the list.
31/10/2018 UPDATE: Sent design files to be prototyped. EST is 16th of November at this stage.
07/12/2018 UPDATE: Samples produced. Waiting for high-res photos from KBDfans and then for them to ship the samples to me. Expecting to receive the samples early January.
21/12/2018 UPDATE: Replaced photos of the samples with a new batch of photos and updated some of the info.
05/01/2019 UPDATE: HAPPY NEW YEAR! Updated the kit previews and added a spacebar kit and split the numberpad into its own kit. I will be ordering some pantones to try and find a white that is slightly less yellow. This will push the GB date out and I have edited the estimated date to reflect that.

Yup, I've tried changing a few things to reduce the amount of overlap:
- Thinner legends as outlined in the original post
- I will be using a different white
- Japanese legends - slightly different to Enjoypbt Black Hiragana
But the main thing will be the Japanese mod kit which I have been working with Ai03 on which should provide Japanese alternatives to almost every mod key.

Why not take advantage that it's dyesub and make sublegends a different color, like red.Hi. I chose black sublegends because I wanted something more simple and clean than this:

I'd definitely be interested in a Japanese mod kit. One thing I like about the alphas with sublegends is the greater amount of legend color that's on the caps, but in contrast the normal mods seem a bit empty and plain.I am generally a fan of icon mods but I think the shift keys look a bit empty and I'm not afraid to mix it up a little.
When pooling the kits that I have planned, my preference will be standard bottom row (includes Japanese sublegends for certain keys), Japanese shift, Icon enter, tab and backspace keys and Japanese navigation cluster.
If you look at some of the old Japanese keyboards, there is actually a fair bit of English on them.
My aim is to have both the base and kits consistent with each other so that you can choose whichever key you want to swap in on a case by case basis and not have them stick out like a sore thumb.

Black and white is good, cleaner then black white and grey.I can get all the design done by the end of the month but what will delay starting the GB would be getting the samples in.
Is there a timeframe for the GB?
It took a long time to get the samples for the normal BoW, which was partly responsible for some of the delays, so I'd prefer to have the samples on hand and have everything confirmed before opening the preorders this time round.

Aside from those, I'd say it would be around the 90-100 USD mark including shipping for the base set, same as epbt BoW since it has a similar number of keys.

I would like some slightly warm white, but not on the yellowish or beige sideMy aim is to match the ED coated cases but without seeing those, my gut feel would be some similar to GMK WS1.

Yes, that will be something that I will look at as well as well as 40% ortho compatibility. I've mentioned this elsewhere before but the tricky thing would be in dealing with the ISO keys that already have sub legends. In the end, it won't be a 'proper' Japanese layout but I should be able to get it to cover the full hiragana alphabet and punctuation keys.

Would love if the Japanese legend modifiers had icons as well, to help non-japanese speakers ?I don't think adding icons to everything would look right. I could add side printed English onto some keys but it can start looking messy very quickly.
There are a few combinations to consider for the mods.

After I do some more work and finish some mock up kits, I'll be opening up another Google form.
The idea at the moment is to have an essentials kit, a standard mod kit, a Japanese mod kit, ISO and Ortho.
Essentials will have alphas, F-row, number pad and arrows and the mod kit will cover everything else. The reason I want to do it this way is because people tend to have lots of leftover keys and having to buy a full base set + Japanese mod kit would mean even more redundant keys.

I've been told by Wei that molds(not sure if this is the right term but may have been lost in translation) are being made by epbt to facilitate reverse dyesubbing. Because of this and to keep the costs down, the ortho kit won't have any accents apart from the spacebar which can be done using a full dye process.
I will be working on the ISO and ortho kit next to finalise the scope and then get back to tweaking the base and Japanese modifiers kits.

They're actually getting more common nowadays, maybe you could check that out!
If it really can't be done, in place legend-specific compatibility keys for minivan layouts, maybe have other symbols on those keys so non-minivan users might be inclined to get them as well, just a thought!

Have a soft spot for jap legends on off-white/white.

If the main and sub legends can be dyesubbed thinner and sharper, I don't mind they are all black especially with jp mods, this should be a classic. The quality of dyesubbing is my only concern.I'll be looking at this closely. For BoW, I was never sent a dyesubbed sample but I'll be asking for one this time. Hopefully the issues of blurriness isn't inherent on all light coloured caps.

I vote NO to grey modifiers. Uniform colour add's to the cleaness of the set, and there are already a variety of sets with Alpha/mod contrast. The black/white reverse dye sub novelties also fit so nicely with the set and having grey mods would make the set too busy imo.
Having said that if it was cost effective to offer the option I wouldnt oppose it. But if push came to shove I'd prefer the universal white.

Well there are 2 stylized R4 keycaps in the Essential Kit. At any rate, OP said the white pantone will be different to that of the previous BOW set, so I doubt mixing-and-matching those would turn out that swell.

Things are trucking along nicely.Pristine uses the same as GMK 9009 which is L9. The lighting in those photos make them look brighter than in person.

I think that the set would look cleaner if there would only be one Hiragana character per keycap, but I don't know if some of the meaning is lost then. I would also prefer if there would be no side print on the grave and super key.

Would it be possible for the Japanese modifiers kit to include an ISO enter with the same legend as the ANSI one? And perhaps a 1.25U シフト without the icon so as to not have the stray boring shift?I think ISO has enough options for a layout that isn't as popular. I also think that icon only ISO enter is the best version for that key.
Regarding the 1.25u shift, I feel that シフト is secondary to the arrow icon so dropping the text makes more sense. It also allows me to optimise the set a little by having only 1 key that would fit both kits.

Do you have a target date for the GB to openLooking at the GB windows of Grayscale and assuming that Slate runs soon after that, I will be guessing early next year.
I will also need to talk to Donutcat about when he is wanting to run Royal Alpha so that there isn't any overlap.
If hiney and donutcat end up delaying their GBs, this may be ran earlier.

I'm just really not a fan of the kits tbh, especially since there are a lot of keys unecessary for me, but giving the choice to people for picking what modifiers they want is a super good idea, especially if it dosent impact the price !

The reason why I want to do this before the GB starts is so that it doesn't put pressure on the GB timeline as everything is ready to go design wise as soon as the GB has started.

Something to consider is that the caps are sitting on a white board which is on a stark 100% white background. So I believe the caps look warmer than they are are. Look at the phone snaps we got. They dont look warm there.
Having said that I'm pretty sure the intention was to go up a notch in warm from BOW. This looks like more than a couple notches. Maybe Wei got a little liberal with the edit?

When you compare BoW to ws1, it is slighter darker but that is offset by how neutral it is which makes it look like a bright white.

From the sample pics that Wei sent me, you can see that the white KBD67 is quite cool and epbt BoW would be a closer match to that.Yeah I know, that's why I'm asking what type of white is yours - didn't realize it's a KBD67, I didn't even know Wei has a white option.
Asked Wei, and said that it's in production right now and should be out next month, and will also have a 4mm plate. I know not entirely related to this, but getting this keycap set I think it'll look really sweet on that new KBD67.

Yes I couldn't follow either.
The market is flooded with Japanese sets with various shades of warmer colors closer to beige and they are of competitive qualities.
I have been following this only because I want a set that is similar to the true white of the EnjoyPBT BoW Black on White but less boring and with these Hiragana Japanese legends...

The WS1 idea was not the very original one and was eventually evolved to perhaps matching WS1 when there is no anchor point for color reference out there and GMK's color is the "current standard".
But please wait a second and think of the GMK Muted project and GMK Modern Dolch - these two all have gone out of their old ways and decided to abandon GMK's colors and switched to use other colors from other reference, e.g. Pantone when they search for a more modern less warm color than the traditional old school colors.
There are too many creamish ivory looking white color keycap sets out there already and I want a real white set to better match the metal keyboard cases, especially in silver and in space grey color, IMO warmer color match better the titanium and gold and champagne which all have some yellowish tint to the color element.
It would be helpful to compare this side by side with other white color keys - while we can see that is currently made to be not as white as the EnjoyPBT BoW.

Last time I attempted this for BoW, Epbt were having trouble make the plastic fully opaque and it tended to warp more than usual so there are some limitations.
I like the whitier caps too (like in the mock up??).Keep in mind that the mock-up keyboard was a MAO E6-V2 which is a little grey which means that the keycaps will look brighter in comparison.
But still in if ur decided with ws1 :thumb:
I have the BoW set and it's whiter than my white iphone, white ikea chair, white zowie mouse, white xiaomi lamp and very similar to the white xbox one controller. WS1 should match better with the other white things (except the white xbox controller).I can only compare the samples against the white Zowie mouse as I don't own any of the other references you have mentioned but the samples are a little warmer (reddish hue) compared to the mouse.

I really like it on that picture with the Chiwi. It actually matches the white on the case pretty well and doesn't seem as yellowish as the kbdfans pictures. Even if you don't change the white, I'm back in for this set.It's hard to tell from the photo but they are a bit more yellow than the Chiwi but the Chiwi's finish is whiter than most whites.

Arrows are pretty universal and I haven't ever seen kanji being used on native Japanese keyboards so probably not, sorry.

Perhaps most people realize that "Kuro & Shiro" means black and white in Japanese, and I am just trying to help expressing my idea to eliminate most, of not all, the beige-ness in the design, to result in the ultimate coolest true Black on true White Japanese set.
It is great to see you listen and then try to make observations, in order to perfect your project.
Looking forward to see the sample in the next revision!

Regarding keyboard matches, I think it will work best with most warm colours and neutral tones but not black.
White, burgundy, green, blue/grey or grey would be my picks.

What I'd be doing is modifying the existing RAlt to Alt Gr rather than adding another key. My aim is to keep the price lower than some of the recent epbt GBs and cut out some redundancy whilst maintaining full compatibility for most non-ergo layouts.For all those instances, that is a Japanese sublegend taking over an iso legend. It is very hard to judge a white based on a photo as every single swatch shown in that photo has a slightly different hue but they appear to be the largely same.
I have chosen a colour which is very neutral. What I have noticed from looking at paint samples and their associated RGB values is that neutral RGB codes appear naturally warm and that colours such as GMK WS2 have a blue tint to them.
I have taken a photo (https://imgur.com/jYsOhQz) of the colour I'm aiming for, along with some GMK colour samples and the original Kuro/Shiro sample (the unlabelled keycap on the far right).
I'll be sending 3 copies of the swatch to KBDfans so that they can forward them on to Enjoypbt and keep 1 as a control for internal checking if they wish to do so.

Regarding keyboard matches, I think it will work best with most warm colours and neutral tones but not black.
White, burgundy, green, blue/grey or grey would be my picks.

Are the currently shown kits final? I think this set would look amazing with a dark mods kitPretty much. It is meant to be a predominantly white set with only a few black accents.
Gok runs his projects with patience and dedication and attention to details.Looking at things that have large and flat surfaces is quite different to some small and has lots of edges a d faces like keycaps. When it comes to whites, the hue is accentuated when it is in shadow which is pretty much the sides of the keycap.

Regarding opacity, I'd like it to be fully opaque because firstly, it makes the keycaps look sharper with edges that look defined and secondly, it makes the dyesubbing sharper.

I'm not sure but it would be quite similar imo. Asides from the irregular spacebar (mostly 4.5u, which I think will never happen) , I think the subs should be same as HHKB JIS.
I know that the demand isn't really that great, but just asking since every mx sliders Japanese caps I know sadly never support the JIS layout, even though they have Japanese sublegends on it.
Edit: Have just checked it out. Both my Minila and Mj2 are having same subs as HHKB.

I've got a black chiwi that I can chuck it on but my personal opinion is that there is that the contrast is too stark and that the normal Epbt Japanese black hiragana set would fit better.
One issue with that is that it has subjectively worse legends, especially the split backspace (think of R1 epbt 9009).
I might do a revision of the black hiragana set if there is ever another round since it would be easy to transfer the legends to that.

There is a 2u spacebar in the 40% kit which is where I think it belongs because I don't want ortho users to have to purchase another kit to provide the compatibility since they would already have a ton of leftover keys.
Regarding hack keys, what is their actual function? It seems like it would be a double up of what the Super and Code (Japanese kit version) provide.

Ah I see. It is hard to match pbt and abs colours sometimes, especially when it comes to blacks. I haven't been happy with the black reversed dyesub colour yet so we will have to see what is achievable.
If you wanted to be sure of an exact match, I'd just get the spacebar kit which includes black spacebars.

They are in the bag somewhere. The black in the current samples aren't black enough so I'm not using them. This is something that happens with scooped cherry profile homing keys in general. This issue really isn't something that will go away unless enjoypbt starts giving people the option of scooped or barred homing keys. Currently, they combine both homing key styles.

Is the noise issue only notable on silenced switches or north facing switches or something? I have ePBT blanks on my current board and my homing keys aren't any different sounding than anything else on my board.
I never noticed the sound either, but I'm assuming that's because I'm using clickies. They definitely felt different when pressed, though, so I would definitely welcome an option for non-scooped homing keys.

There are lots of beige-ish white sets out there already, by ePBT or by GMK, people can as well buy those sets, which can be "better" for some people's taste.
There is a lack of key cap sets WITHOUT the yellowish tones, and the demand is emerging to match better the metal case colors, e.g. GMK Muted, GMK modern Dolch.
I am not saying lighter colors are better on PBT:
it is rather for light legends on darker caps, such as Dolch, I rather have the ABS double shot than relying on the newer reverse-dyesub technique. When something such as darker legends on lighter caps can be achieved in PBT through dyesub (or BSP, Hammer, or ePBT quality), I prefer they are PBT caps over ABS caps.
I used to type on HHKB, and SGI Granite - the feel and sound of PBT. And BSP, and OG Cherry dyesub are superb to use - it's just my preference (POM >> PBT > ABS).
Moreover, Some people like shine on caps, while some other have their own sandblasting setup to remove the shine; I don't like shine, but it will show that a set is well used and loved.

Sometimes, you read stuffs that just makes you think "Man, other people are so... different to me".
IMHO any "dark test on light background" GMK set is a total waste because it could have been done in PBT and thus saves us from the blight of ABS shininess (Ewww gross) :'(, which is why for the longest time I was campaigning hard for an EnjoyPBT Muted (which finally comes true this year with Grayscale) :)
Anyway, getting back to Kuro/Shiro, I probably wouldn't mind if OP goes for a lighter white tone, but that will make the waiting even longer, so I think WS1 is fine.

Sorry missing the biggest point of light color on PBT > on ABS:

Now all we need is a render of that cap and this set on a RAMA Milk! So excited for this. Now I’m not sure if I want Minimal, but I will get the the RAMA “X” cap on that drop to match this drop. Now all I need is a matching black “O” with white enamel or the reversed. But “X” and “黒” placed on either end of the number row on the M60-A will look awesome. Hope these caps arrive before the Milk I ordered. ;D

In your original photos your backspace key used the backspace icon… but in later renders you’ve gone with the long backwards arrow. I personally prefer the proper icon (the X is good for delete, while a plain left arrow feels like a cursor).Sorry, I'm not sure which original photo you are referring to. The Japanese mod kit has the more traditional style of arrow + text and the icon has the longer arrow on the 2u and box on the 1.25u which I think works for an icon mod kit. I am trying to differentiate the 2 mod kits as much as possible whilst sticking with the original theme and also allowing for mixing and matching between the mod kits.

Any word on the scooped homing keys yet? It seems the runner for Extended 2048 managed to get barred only homing keys from epbt for their set.I've received confirmation that they are able to do barred keys which will be what I'm running with.

There's only 1x 1u Shift [Essentials kit] and 1x 1.25u Fn [Standard/JP mod kit], however I plan on buying 2 sets so that should be okay.
But can I use the R2 1.75u Control key in R1? Or would it look blatantly out of place?
Minila Ctrl keys are kinda fragile for some reason (in 5 years I've snapped 5 LCtrl stems) so I get a feeling I'll have no backups and end up using whatever 1.75u keys (Shift/CapsLock prolly) that I can find ,'/

I’m looking at the Uni660 split keyboard by Sirius which has some weird modifier, Shift and Spacebar needs… but these sets covered everything (unlike most of the sets in the MD Re-Cap).
Super happy with this. And now we wait.

That $59 is the base price, kits added to cart either add to or subtract from that price. If you had an extra slot for a kit, it would show that $59. Either pick a kit or remove that extra slot. Shouldn't just have an extra $59 on top of what is in your cart.

The 3U keys that came with ePBT Grayscale are proper spacebar keys, same profile as normal spacebars. So it's no stretch of the imagination that the 2.75 and 2.25 keys are like this as well.

As stated before, the colour is between WS1 and CP and I am trying to get it closer towards WS1.

They are most likely to ship VERY soon. There are properly waiting for the bulk shipment and Kbdfans is pretty fast getting GBs out of the door. :thumb:

Out of curiosity, how many Rama caps were commissioned?I'm not sure whether I'm allowed to disclose that. What is already known is that MOQ is 50 and that was obviously met.
Will there be extra sets available on the vendors? I regret not grabbing a planck kit...You will need to ask KBDfans directly. If push comes to shove, I have a planck kit sample that I could sell you.

Back in March, I had sent colour swatches for EPBT to colour match to and the samples arrived in April. I told KBDfans that it was too red and that to get a better idea of the hue, you need to look at the back of the keycaps rather than the top.
They agreed and asked if they could approve the next round of samples. I obliged because I thought it would be a simple task since they just needed to make a colour halfway between the first and second samples (brightness similar to the second sample but in a more neutral hue like the first sample) and I thought we were on the same page and also they knew from the beginning what my aims were.
This was my mistake and the third sample which got the green light by KBDfans went into production. I received the samples this week and I noticed that they looked really warm so I compared them to the colour samples that I received in April and found that they were virtually the same so I alerted KBDfans who put a stop on the production in order for us to re-confirm the colour again.
I'm sorry about the inconvenience this causes but I believe that getting a better product is worth the extra delays.
