Title: Cartoon Thread

Lately clacktalk has turned me on to Rick and Morty, and I really enjoyed it. :D

Unfortunately, it was only two seasons and now I'm starving for more cartoons.

I'm also a big fan of Archer, but I'm all caught up on that as well.

What kinda cartoons do you guys like? Let's share some good stuff. :thumb:

King of the Hill is my old standby. That or Futurama. You can't go wrong with either of them  :thumb:

Kinda done with those, but yeah they're good staples from the past!

What I really like about Rick and Morty is that it gives me a Futurama-esque excitement with all the creative settings and characters. It's like Futurama on steroids and being on point, all the time.

I just got into Teen Titans Go! It's so goofy and fun. Definitely one of my favorite newer cartoons.

And I just watched Jurassic Bark last night. The feels, they were all too real :(. Makes me want to hug my dog every time.

If you're into something more serious, I recently re-watched Gargoyles and it blew me away. I remembered it as an action series when I was younger - but it has some of the most in depth character development of any cartoon. The plot lines and story arcs are fantastic, drawing heavily on mythology of all cultures and Shakespearean allusions are everywhere (something I didn't really pick up on as a kid).

Me too!  I saw the first Spongebob movie in the theater.  I was probably the only grown up there without kids laughing as much as the kids.

The WB classics are awesome.  There's no 'poof' noise like Coyote off a cliff.

I loved Dexter's lab!  I got his voice down pretty good, but it's been a few years that I've tried.

I actually have a signed, very, very, very limited edition (like 10 of them) signed poster from Craig Macraken (sp?), the creator of the Powerpuff Girls.  There was a message board back in the day when the show first came out and I was like one of the top 3 posters, lol.  I've got to find that poster.  It's going to bug me now...

Yep, can't beat them.  They have a lot of plot development for such a short cartoon.  Did you ever see the movie?

I actually didn't even see the movie, I was afraid it would tarnish it for me. It surprised me when I found out a few years after it was over that Stephen Colbert voiced Phil Ken Sebben

Regular show has been one of my favorite shows for awhile. Great characters and voice actors, awesome art direction and rediculous yet grounded storylines. I'd highly recommend people on this forum watch the format wars episodes, as obsolete, undervalued technology is definitely something we can all relate to...

Also theres not many other "childrens" shows that would do episodes about drinking and blacking out in the middle of nowhere or getting stuck on "bachelor island" after a horrible breakup. I'm really glad that kids these days have something that they might actually learn something about their future from.

I'm also a huge fan of adventuretime for similar reasons- immersive character and world building, fantastic cameos and some really interesting storylines. Some of it is a bit "lol random" or very campy, but I feel like the really well crafted episodes cancel out the bad.

Bojack horseman is another show that knocks it out of the park with art direction, especially their sight gags, which are quickly approaching simpsons level quality. I also love how dark and serious it can go, without feeling too heavy or repetive (like regular show was a certain point with CJ/Margaret)

And if anyone hasn't watched it yet, go out and get "Over the garden wall". Its amazing. Christopher Lloyd is absolutely phenomenal, along with all the other voice actors, and its really a beautiful tribute to classic animation and storytelling.

Futurama is probably my go to cartoon, I also enjoy Archer a lot as well. I'm not a huge anime fan but I quite enjoyed Attack on Titan, especially with the English versions out I recommend it but it only has one season at the moment.

I have been really enjoying Bob's Burgers. Way more than I thought I would.

At first I felt quite turned off by some of the characters, but after watching for a bit, I felt that all of the characters especially Bob and the kids have redeeming qualities. That said, still not a big fan of Teddy or Linda. Really love the kids, they're all great for different reasons.

It's interesting how even what seems like the simplest thing has layers upon layers of understood complexities.  And those geniuses that understand how to make all of those layers work for them.

Spongebob just got so much worse over the years. Sandy is basically non-existent, Spongebob is either whiny as hell or too stupid to function, Patrick is either too stupid to function or an *******, Mr. Krabs is just a greedy *******. AHHHH! Real Monsters. Agreed on the spongebob shpeel. It was the best in the early years. It seemed a bit twisted for children now that I watch it as an adult.

Yup, the Flanders Effect (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Flanderization). It happens a lot in long-running characters, unfortunately.

I could talk about cartoons all day.

In general I'm super happy that we have finally gotten out of the era of cynical, faux-vintage tone and style in American cartoons. It took us 15 years to get out of the shadow of Ren and Stimpy and Powerpuff Girls (not that those aren't great shows, but they were imitated in tone and design ad naseum). I really enjoy the new school of character design and genuine emotion that started flourishing with Adventure Time and Regular Show a few years ago.

I'm almost done with season 2 of Rick and Morty now. I love the show, but the B-storylines with Morty's family don't work for me at all. I really, really want to love Bojack Horseman but I just don't find it that compelling. The characters are great (except for Todd), the gags are great, the themes are great, but it doesn't form a cohesive whole that I love as much as I feel like I should.

How many episodes have you seen?  You've probably heard it already, but the tone shifts drastically mid-way through the first season.

Highly recommend F is For Family, especially if you're a fan of Bill Burr (as he voices the main character). The first season is on Netflix, and while it's only 6 episodes, it's definitely worth the watch.

Also, Stephen Hillenburg departed after the first Spongebob movie in 2004, IIRC.

I'm done season 4 of Bob's Burgers and I'm reluctant to watch more... afraid that I'll have nothing left once I'm all caught up.

It has really been my favourite series in the longest time. :)

Another thing to note, I was on a vacation a few days ago and just chilled in the hotel and watched some older spongebob. I really love and miss those episodes where it's silly but still damn funny at the same time. Not so much mindless stupidity.

So with running out of Bob's Burgers episodes to watch, a few years until more Rick and Morty, what should I check out that would be similar and enjoyable? I like fun stuff, but nothing brain-dead stupid. In fact, Rick and Morty was especially awesome because of how sci-fi and smart it was haha.

Yeah, him leaving and the writer's strike really killed the show. Sucks so much because before that it really was a great show. Obviously I'm a little out of their target demo by now, but I still just can't watch any of the new stuff, it's just too stupid.

Huge fan of gravity falls, the season finale episodes were amazing, just for the imagery. I enjoy adventure time as well, though I fell off in later seasons as soon as they started actually explaining what was going on. Futurama is probably my all time favorite, and these days R&M took that spot since it's on the same vibe.

My childhood was filled with the same staple cartoons I see in here, it's awesome. Can't remember if I read that you guys mentioned Ren and Stimpy, or like cow and chicken, "ed, edd, and eddy". There were so many. Been getting tired of watching random things on youtube, I think I'm gonna start watching cartoons

I'm kind of surprised I found some cartoons I haven't heard about, but would be interested in watching here! Lately I've been looking into getting out the old rose-colored specs and checking out some of the old 80s-90s obscurities and  saturday am cartoons I use to watch with my bro growing up to see if any were actually good.

I'm also surprised no one mentioned Star vs the Forces of Evil; character progression and interaction seems surprisingly deep for how goofy they can normally behave, and it seems to have a pretty solid story with decent world building. I'd rate it up there with Adventure Time and Steven Universe for recent good general cartoons.

Never got into the hipster cartoons of the past few years. By that I mean Regular Show, Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, etc. I'm only 35, but I still with what I grew up with, and then some later shows like Family Guy or American Dad. But mainly 90's Simpsons, King of The Hill, Beavis and Butthead.
