cool story bro... 16:10 gives you more vertical pixels in no way does it give you less assuming native res. POV might play a factor sometimes.
-this coming from someone who has the following at home: 16:9, 4:3, 16:10, 5:4...i could test it all if i could be bothered...

so much varies on how the game is setup and handles it 16:10>16:9

The thing is most game have a fixed FOV which has no in game adjustment options, so even if you have the closest possible resolution in 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10, 21:9 the FOV dosen't change to compensate so you get scaling or cut off. Now if you go in the .cfg and manually correct that, you do see more in each step up whether it be more vertical, or more horizontal.

Personally I prefer to have more horizontal for gaming, as enemies are more likely to be in right left periphery than above or below so extra vertical has little advantage in most games unless it is a vertical scroller or something.

i do understand where he is misinterpreting it, its just because games dont always alter FOV, but if setup right 1920x1200 (or any 16:10 res) will give you more viewing space, if not then the pixel will just add to the detail (higher PPI) and may cut off a tiny bit

It depends on the scaling the game uses. Hor+ scaling is the most common where the vertical FOV is fixed. This is also why 16:10 can become cropped because of the fixed FOV height when compared to 16:9. Of course there are some games that use pixel scaling which means you do get to see more vertically but they are extremely uncommon in games these days otherwise everyone would be rocking 2560x1600 screens.

PS. I don't know why some of you guys are arguing about screen size. The game's FOV is independent to the physical dimension of the monitor.

You can do some stuff for the desktop and to an extent force scaling over rides. The problem with many games is the fov is still hard locked to scale against 16:9 usually. It is better to edit the config instead whenever possible.

if it is almost all competitive gaming, consider 120hz/144hz and response time over IPS

Right now I would say either the BenQ XL2420T (120hz) or the ASUS VG248 (144hz). Just know the panels for ASUS and BenQ are made in the same factory and are the same. But the BenQ apparently comes with better colour processing while the ASUS is sub-par. With that being said I have the ASUS and a couple nVidia colour tweaks and it was as good as the BenQ so... With the ASUS too you have the option to go to 144hz / 120hz as well as Lightboost. The BenQ has 120hz / Lightboost available.

Bro Caps, when Kuroneko says "you see less with 16:10", he means in game content or horizontal FOV (not number of pixels). Just see the starcraft GIF (and other screenshots); you see more of the in game content with 16:9 in many games (absolutely relevant, especially for RTS). No wonder that the majority of 120Hz gaming monitors uses 16:9.

The problem here was the terminology ("see more/less" what?). Given a horizontal resolution, with 16:10 you see more pixels; with 16:9 you see more in game content in many games

Im rocking a Qnix QX2710. Mine was pristine when I got it. No defects at all. 1440p overclocked to 120Hz. It is amazing. Besides the lack of DP I love it. Should totally get a second one now that I think of it...

Guess I got lucky. Been using it for over a year and still going strong.

I've looked at some of the new ultrawides that are coming out with IPS panels and G-sync/freesync but I don't think I'm going to make the switch. Scaling in games can be wonky on those. Great for productivity though.

If you mainly play FPS games, I suggest benq XL2730Z. It's one of the best 144hz monitors on market now. Asus also is a good choice.

I kind of like my VA for gaming. It has 4 ms reaction time and good colours, and I don't need more than 60 fps, hence refresh rate. But competitive FPS (or even competitive something else) surely would be a different matter, not that you can't do competitive gaming on 60 fps.

The BenQ have good reviews.

In any case, I'd probably insist on trying them out first or at least seeing them at work, first-hand.
