I don't have a scroll wheel to miss.

Neanderthal. You have no idea what it's like going without a scroll wheel until you've gotten used to it. Sort of like sex with a beloved partner.

If anyone has one of those trackball things they want to resell for about 5 bucks and ship for ACTUAL shipping cost, I'd appreciate a PM. eBay seller is insisting on shipping priority because they "need to have tracking". That "requirement" is costing them a customer...

How much were they charging for shipping?

Some of their listing are $15, some are $18. Don't know why, but I managed to get the $15 one.

I see your point though, it's NOT the same cost to ship it to Europe as it is to ship it to Canada...

I strongly recommend people HOLD OFF on buying one of the L40 mice from u.s.surplus because the seller has a serious courtesy issue and appears to gouge on shipping.

Well, maybe if you're in Canada... I think $15 is decent enough for Europe though.

The third button works just as well for actual scrolling. For games I've gotten more used to using the number keys to switch weapons.

Well, the seller made his way onto my "Difficult/Dishonest eBay Sellers List" on a couple sites I participate on now based on that fiasco. I was ultimately told in ALLCAPS to "buy one elsewhere". Thanks Ron, your courtesy is appreciated.

I strongly recommend people HOLD OFF on buying one of the L40 mice from u.s.surplus because the seller has a serious courtesy issue and appears to gouge on shipping.

...looks like a while before I end up with one to play with, but there will be others.

---

I completely forgot to include the extra-heavy Microsoft "serial/mouse port compatible" mice in my favs list. Recently got another one of those, this time with a PS/2 end on it. I definitely like them...they track really smoothly and the weight is kind of "reassuring".

When looking for a mouse, do you prefer a heavy or light mouse? (directed at anyone who reads it, nobody in particular)

I had no trouble with US Surplus when I got my Trackpoint L40 a while ago. It arrived in a few days and I payed a total of about $15. I got exactly what they described.

Ugh I hate the "Electronic shipping info received". It can mean anything from "Seller arranged it to ship in 3 months" to "The USPS tracking system shows no updates once again and the mail guy can deliver it in 5 minutes."

In one situation I had, it translated to "The parcel has lost it's label and is sitting around in some back office somewhere or other"... I hate parcel companies...

I have a logitech LX5, absolutely best mouse I've ever owned.

I like to keep it simple, it fits in my hand good, the invisible optic gets mad amounts of battery life (the wireless mice I had before it would undergo battery changes once per month or more) this one goes for 4 months and then the low battery light goes on and it goes for another 2 months.

I'd rank it as perfectly ideal, it has 5 buttons (3 in the scroll wheel: down, left, right) It's simple, comfortable, precise, and I only have to fumble for batteries a couple times per year.

I'm also fond of the thinkpad track point as far as notebook pointers (although it's not as easy to master as a mouse, it's the only alternative built on to notebooks to the touch pad :P) - touchpad is good too, but sometimes I like the track point instead.

I prefer a track point to a touchpad as well. Fingers have too much friction on touch pads, making them a pain to use.

I like it a lot. It's my first Cherry board. The layout is annoying sometimes, but not too bad. It's lighter than any other keyboard I've ever typed on, but not in a bad way. It's been described as "springy" and it is. I had to experience it for myself to understand.

It's my most expenseve keyboard so far at ~$40 shipped. I do not regret the purchase.

Brown Cherrys are great. I have a hard time typing on 'boards with different switches, because I have gotten used to the lightness of the browns. I can post a bunch of garbage on GeekHack all day and not feel the least bit fatigued.

In many Internet browsers it defaults the third button to do that. I also like to use it for scrolling. It's much better than the scrolly-wheel in my opinion.

I am using an old Microsoft mouse, one of the ones with a scroll wheel.  PS/2 interface.  It works every once in a while, but not often enough.  The same with the scroll buttons on the trackpad.  They only work sometimes.  Is it just that Micron Transports are not common enough for Ubuntu 9.10 to have drivers for it?

Strange. PS/2 is pretty device agnostic, so just about every mouse is handled by the same driver. I don't suppose it has the same problems in Windows?

Also, don't feed it through the PS/2 passthrough on your M4-1, those things can't understand scroll wheels for some odd reason.

The scroll wheel works in Windows, but it only works sometimes in Linux.  And I know about the M4-1, I use to use another mouse on that keyboard, and the scroll wheel didn't work.  I prefer to use the trackpoint anyways.

Ah, crapola. My just-received $52 eBay trackman FX trackball isn't as smooth as my $5 flea market version of the same hardware.

Cleaned the triple contacts, cleaned the ball. What's left to fix? Am I doomed to a scratchey old age trackball? Would teflon pads be more smooth and would they allow spins after my fingers left the ball?

I always wanted an FX. Maybe find a heavier ball. The extra weight might make it smoother and would contribute more to inertia.

They get better once some skin oils have worked their way onto the surfaces. The process can be speeded up, but I'll leave you to work out how, every description I think of sounds like innuendo.

try rubbing the ball against your forehead or side of your face. that should help to smooth things out.
