I'll buy this anyway because I love the layout, but I really, really dislike this - it's so common for buyers of high-end customs to buy multiple PCBs and plates for a variety of reasons (if a PCB dies, if you want to build with different switch types, etc). I can't think of any GBs other than this and the Zephyr that didn't make this an option. I think "but it has a nice box" is a silly reason if purely aesthetic - perhaps more reasonable if it keeps things simple in terms of a single shipping box size, but it seems like enough people would buy an extra plate+PCB combo to make it worth it.
Even Rama's board GBs, where there's a similar zeal (ahem) for aesthetics in the packaging etc, allow for the purchase of extras.

I really wanted to see silver on black pvd or silver on rose gold pvd or black on rose gold pvd prototypes. Also, from the renders, black seems to be like a very dark gray? Is it going to that way or will it be black as in real black?
We are waiting on new samples of all available color options! Machining is done, waiting on the PVD finish.

He did offer a discount he be screwing everyone that bought in at the higher price. That means going back and refunding those people. The board is something you really like then the 40-60 dollar difference shouldn't stop ya. That is to big a barrier for you to surmount then the board's not for you.

Surprised the Zeal PCB mounting legs are loose, v1 were insanely tight in Cherry-spec PCBs. I heard Zeal tried to fix that for v2, maybe they over-compensated?
Ideally they're not loose in the PCB at all, so alignment with a partial/plateless build shouldn't be that problematic.
I don't believe Zeal over-compensated here — I don't want any misinformation to be spread. Wilba, who designed this PCB, designs PCBs for Zeal as well, and has in the past used a very slightly larger than Cherry-spec switch mounting holes in order to accommodate non-Cherry switches with legs that were slightly oversized. In my builds, it wasn't problematic (I've built two half-plate PCBs out at this point), but future PCBs will be made with standard Cherry-spec mounting holes.
Maybe zeal or pwner can confirm on the pcb situation if he has the proto case + pcb with the v2s on hand to test out. I may be being overly cautious but loose v2 with half plate Xeno might make keycap alignment troublesome. Thank you!

Have to voice out my long hidden question / wish:
Does the current PCB design (which already looks great) support any type of hot sockets for make it hot swappable?
I haven't invested in one of those multi-hundred dollar desoldering setup and every time I desolder something I burned, tore, and damaged the pad and the circuit.
Zeal or Pwner, have you guys had a chance to see if the hot swap sockets or Holyoke’s fit with the keeb?
I have led/switch holtites and mill max sockets on the way from another user that I will be using to test that. :thumb:
Any chance you guys have had a chance to see if the Holtites or hot swap sockets work with this?

I'm curious about the silver colored case - in the renders on the product page, the initial one for the half plate looks like a light silver, whereas in the jamon renders, it appears to be darker and a bit more towards the light grey spectrum. Which is more accurate?

In case anyone missed it, terminal, 9009, Olivia and hyperfuse origins renders were added to the group buy page. Shout-out to janglad for those. A couple renders of Oblivion were also added courtesy of oblotzky and jamon from zambumon as well.Oof that terminal render. So stoked!

How many of you have bought an extra pcb for this? Is it worth it for peace of mind?
I usually do for customs, but Wilba has a pretty good reputation for high quality PCBs. Personally I have skipped the extra PCB on this one because of that, and I do not plan on desoldering this one as often as I do on other boards (not that I've had a problem with any of them either).

Agree. The purple looked awesome in renders, but it just wasn't a "safe" bet.
I am bit surprised the silver generated that much comparable interest, however, silver (like black) goes very well with many key sets.
Now, if Purple ends up looking anything like the renders, it would be a rare gem among these.
(I went with black, bc it was safe :thumb: )

It's the same size hole as any other PCB I've made, and probably any other PCB anyone has ever made, i.e. standard Cherry spec. I know other PCBs I've made work with holtites and mill-max sockets.

The thing is, whenever I (e.g. for rebuilding) desolder switches mounted on plates - I usually end up lifting most of the pads.
And I love to try out different switches - I know these are better to let it serve the normal purpose of sticking to one kind of switches.

Not to pile on... but I'm going to pile on.
Pwner themselves haven't been able to get updates from Zeal.
I personally had to ask 7 times in 5 different servers in which Zeal appeared to get some info.
I am well aware that delay and qc takes time, but Zeal has all the emails of the participant of the GB. He can email updates, post them on his site, or even show up in his own server from time to time.
If other vendors can put up timely updates, so can zeal.

Apologies for the lack of updates recently. Our manufacturer has been missing their estimates as of late and we've been busy fulfilling regular switch orders. The reason for delay is the Chinese government has been enforcing "Environmental protection" and various factories of all sorts have been under scrutiny/audits. The govt has personnel randomly show up anytime of the week to make sure the factories aren't over-producing what they've claimed and aren't over polluting the environment by taking on extra work. If they're caught taking on additional work or working past stated hours, they get fined/closed.
Our latest update is that the Xenos with black and silver PVD parts will be shipped out first, packing this Sat. Shipment will be expressed over by air and we expect to receive it mid next week.

Zeal confirmed its a recut. Not just a recoat. Kinda a bummer but as someone who got Rose Gold, I do want it to be as close to the render color as possible.
That being said, +1 to the B stock Rose Gold Option!

Some people are getting their black on black before others depending on what extras you ordered, they're comming! Waiting for a black on black myself with a few extras an I ordered in Nov, patience is the key, just wait for that fine wine to arrive

Thanks for posting the update info. I'm still excited for the board and after seeing the pictures I'm glad they haven't been sent out yet. Though its frustrating that this has happened I think Zeal is making the correct, though difficult, decision. I can only imagine the damage to Zeal as a brand in sending out low quality products, I'm sure this is stressful for Zeal. :(
Seconded. I'm salty I don't have my Xeno yet but I'd be 10x saltier if I got it in the condition of the pics. I will happily wait until the finish product has the quality we've come to expect from Zeal.

Look, I'm actually friends with the guy an am still waiting on black & black... Its not his fault, sometimes being the middle man leaves you unable to have full control of everything... I don’t think his character or morals have ever been in question. Timely updates, updating here, like he personally said he would, responding to questions about updates, etc, are.
I think that is one of the STRONG characteristics of hobbyists on this level. I’m a BIG knife guy and knife guys will wait on a makers books for years, as long as they feel like they’ve been kept in the loop. Then they’ll hand over $1K+ with a smile after waiting years for a knife.

Zeal said on Discord recently that the latest shipment had 25 units--and that's prior to his QC check, so only a portion of those might pass and get shipped to buyers.
Given the likely scale of the Xeno GB, I'd speculate that we are looking at a very long, slow trickle to complete fulfillment of orders, at this rate. Could be another six months, easy.
I wouldn't have to speculate if we had any more concrete info, but we clearly do not. No numbers of outstanding orders, no ETAs or target ship dates, nothing. The info we have has been provided with too little context for clear interpretation.

Yeah. Here's the thing. We've heard about the color issues with rose gold plates, but folks with other configurations are still waiting on their boards, as well. Would be curious to know the true size of the backlog of unfulfilled orders, which seem to span all color configs.

It's disappointing that folks seem to be getting the runaround on this. I remember opting for the M60-A SEQ2 over the Xeno and now I'm feeling like I dodged a bullet :(
M60-A SEQ 2 hasn’t shopped at all yet. I have seen some Xenos in person, though. The difference is that RAMA has been publicly updating their customers on a regular cadence (roughly once a month or so) while Zeal’s transparency of the project has left many folks reasonably uncomfortable. Zeal’s involvement in the Xeno project has been disappointing at best. I obviously don’t know all the details of what he’s having to deal with his manufacturer and I trust that everyone who paid for a Xeno will eventually receive one. Zeal can’t afford to sour his relationship with the community enough that people stop overpaying for his switches

Thank you for sharing. I had not seen this.
I knew the long wait would increase expectations and the boards were going to be knit picked, but I don’t even think those (I only watched the unboxing and opening of the case and stopped when he walked out of the room) are the Anthony001 knit picks that usually drive me nuts as I watch him tear a board apart. That is just bad craftsmanship. Especially from a “boutique” offering that has had an even higher level of QC’ing or so we’ve been told.

The extent of the problems is tough to summarize, but it includes vastly different black ano finishes on the top and bottom parts of the case, visible machining marks inside and out, mis-aligned screw holes partially drilled and restarted, and sloppy fit between top and bottom case pieces.
My sense is that this board looks substantially worse than what would pass for B stock in the custom world generally. Watch the video to judge for yourself.

I honestly don’t care about machine marks or anodizing issues on hidden parts. You will never see them. The color mismatch on black is disappointing though. I thought black was one of the easier colors to get right in these applications. Maybe not.

I think any of us could overlook some things. IF we weren’t being marketed a “boutique” product that has taken over a year to even begin to come to fruition and has had mediocre communication from the GB runner. Not to mention the top dollar asking price. That’s a lot of pill to swallow. And that’s before we get to the fact that we’ve been told the delay was because QC had to be first and subpar products wouldn’t be tolerated.

All valid points. I still don't think we know exactly what happened in communications between the manuf. and Zeal. My hunch is that they said they were acceptable, he said they weren't and there you have a standoff. So they say, we'll make them better when we have time, or you take them all now. This is the end result. Seems plausible to me.

If we don’t know, that’s purely Zeal’s fault. He won’t report over here and I had to continually communicate in his server until he finally added an update section. He’s in total control of that section and this GB. If I had thousands and thousands of people’s dollars and hadn’t delivered a product in over a year, I’d probably try to give as much info as possible and get as much heat off me as possible. That’s just me using logic and perspective bias though.
Very good to support the designer. Zeal still set the price based on boutique criteria. Unfortunately those two criteria are not mutually exclusive.

Photos using indoor plant lights (more white than orange compared to normal bulbs). Not bad at all. Color matching reasonable and only somewhat noticeable under certain lighting or angles. There are machine marks on the Xeno logo inside the case on the weight as well as outside the case on the weight. Inside logo marks are more noticeable than the ones on the outside. I did not include the photo of this since I took it on my smartphone but I posted it in the Xeno discord. I have yet to open it up and look closely for any problems inside the case or in the screw holes.

That actually looks fine.
Color matching isn't perfect, but not a nightmare like some of the other boards we've seen.

Your best bet is to join the Zeal discord server. From what I understand, the person who has taken over doing QC is actively updating what colors and when they are shipped.
Also, I want to reconfirm the use of VIA. A couple people have had issues with using the incorrect hex and VIA not detecting. Be sure to grab the latest version of VIA from here (https://caniusevia.com/) and also the correct WT75-a firmware from this page (https://caniusevia.com/docs/download_firmware).

I got mine, built it, and have been enjoying it. It's like B-stock quality overall, but the design of the keyboard is fantastic. Sound and feel are excellent. The layout is also just about the perfect medium for me in terms of size, aesthetics, and utility.

Well, that's quite nice. Love their RGB stuff. Not sure how they'll accomplish that in QMK. Maybe just something more simple for the QMK port.

Waiting for silver as well. I like the way the silver turned out. I have seen mention of people putting inlay on the backplate to hide potential machine marks left in the logo. What is the process for this? What materials are used?

The actual Chinese keyboard makers like Gray Studio, Percent Studios, Exclusive, Fox Labs and Matrix Lab seem to be able to produce good products without anything beyond the usual group buy and/or COVID-19 related delays.

Yeah, two years is pretty bad, I agree, but I work in hardware too, and what you have to remember is most people on here don't and have no idea what they are doing. Sure you or me could **** out a polished mass produced product in 8 months with a lot of funding, or prototype level thing like most stuff on here is in a few months, but people who don't know what they are doing will take much much longer.

The machining quality is basically on par with a run of the mill $300 keyboard.
This doesn't look any better than a Monstargear keyboard.

There is no excuse for Zeal actions, especially (as was said by etong415) that he seems to be an experienced seller in the community.
I probably wouldn't be that angry and disappointed, if Zeal was even 10% as transparent and active about the info as Ellipse with his F62 and F77 keyboards. Ellipse is a role model about the prolonging group buy - very informative, shares lots of photos, even suggests faster shipping of keyboards without keycaps so people don't have to wait (and with an additional payment for the shipping he will send keycaps separately when they will be ready).
So yeah, it's like heaven and hell, when I compare Ellipse and Zeal.

Huh, I come from a country located in Europe and I love my special beers that don't taste like water :) Did you know that Belgium has saying that there is one beer for every day of the year? That's how big the variety of this golden beverage is there.
I didn't want to make Chinese people feel bad. The point was that if it's such a big problem with the current manu (that was already changed once from Chinese to another Chinese manu), maybe it would be easier to communicate with somebody from USA or European countries.

To add I've had issues sometimes with USB hubs causing a problem similar to this.My xeno seems to be acting up after sitting for a while. When I come back to the computer, it often doesn't work. Unplugging it and plugging it back in seems to fix the issues. Any ideas?

Photos they posted are very low quality, so unfortunately I can't really tell much about quality of finish. It's color looks a bit more sating than matte, but I like it. It's uniform and evenly coated.
The other photo shows the plate, but we can't see engravings' smoothness (we saw before that it was one of the biggest disappointments in Xenos) because they have stickers on them.
