the ergodox makes me happy every day
i think you messed up quoting my post
yeah the aluminium case needs to be shaved (or the PCB) for the PCB to work with the case and the case is very rough to touch and kind of dirty so many have cleaned and sanded and buffed it.
i have yet to do anything to the aluminium case yet so right now except try out the top and bottom layers on the acrylic one so i don't have the second ergodox yet, not that i need it right now anyway.
the acrylic for the most part is cut correctly, i think i saw a burn mark but nothing noticeable.
problem with the acrylic, especially clear acrylic, its not very pretty, it makes something that looks geeky already look even more geeky and it gets dirty very easily.
and this is coming from me who owns a 30" tall danger den clear acrylic tower LOL
Massdrop is making the right move by dropping the aluminum case. It is a royal PITA. The finish is rough, to say the least, and the fitment is awful. There is a lot of error in the cuts, so the PCB wouldn't even fit into the case. A lot of grinding, milling, drilling, filing, and polishing, I finally got it to work. Not perfect, but tolerable at least.Show Image(http://www.knizefamily.net/images/pool/keyboard-ergodox-left.jpg)Show Image(http://www.knizefamily.net/images/pool/keyboard-ergodox-left-close.jpg)
It's loaded up with lubed browns and the "qwerty-kinesis-mod" layout to start. Between the matrix layout and blank keys, typing is a huge challenge.
I think when I end up putting mine together I'm going to make a GUI layout creator for it. I have a feeling I'm going to be re-programming this thing quite a few times, and I want that to be as easy as possible. What about the massdrop configurator?

Also things like macro keys, shifted symbols, and other more advanced keyboard features would be nice to have in a gui too. What about the massdrop configurator?
Not quite as easy as I'd like. I want to configure it, hit save and it uploads to the device.
Larken, it looks like you've made a Predator version. :p
Here's a gross pic of mine with some random devlin caps. Ignore the blur, dust and other things :D
This post has an amazing custom case with the ergo dox. I would post it, but it's not mine to post so I'll just link it:

I really wanted to buy one of these. Maybe if they do a third round, or maybe I can grab one in the Classifieds some day.

True, but I don't own a Phantom, but I will own an ErgoDox :)
Plus, I like getting my hands dirty. I've even toyed with the idea of replacing the controller on one of my RealForces with a Teensy 3.
TBH, I'll probably put a Teensy 3 in my ErgoDox (micro USB ftw) and save the Teensy 2 for some other project.
*EDIT* Damn, looks like the Teensy 3 won't fit in the same pinout as the 2.0, oh well :(
@SmallFry: I plan on doing that anyways (been programming for 15 years now).Welp... that covers my life basically. 0.o

im gonna keep bumping this thread until more people share, im doing exciting things with my other ergodox soon which is now my travel ergodox. can't wait to share that, but i can't until i replace a part i broke.
Gotta say that i think i am done with using normal keyboards. i am still going to collect keyboards and key caps and i plan on building more DIY boards. 3 of the 4 GH60s i am getting are going to be gifted or sold to friends. But the ErgoDox is the best keyboard I've owned. It combines all the things i loved from other keyboards I've owned and has the customized experience you only get from a DIY cherry mx board.
My next keyboard to replace the ErgoDox, if that ever happens, would be another DIY board with the matrix layout or maybe the next offering from Kenesis. A long shot would also be owning a uTron (split ergo topre? ermagawd topre....)

I could never use that keyboard, but my god... that combination is amazing, those rests look amazing and work so well with the caps and the case... it looks like a keyboard from the future... but better and with some retro charm. Really love that alot

Question for Glod or anyone else - any ideas where to find similar screws for the ergodox, but nickel plated or in some other metal that wouldn't rust? The ones that came with the buy are already showing some signs of rusting. No big issue, but its something I would rather take care of if I could.
Decided to put off doing any further alterations to my ergodox in the short term due to being swamped with work, so I figured I'll share its current state.

McMaster-Carr stocks a variety of socket head cap screws (http://www.mcmaster.com/#socket-head-cap-screws/) available in stainless steel, which you can also prolly find at your local hardware store more conveniently, albeit more expensively as well. Screws provided with the kit are M3x0.5 (std. coarse thread), 22mm long. UTS (SAE) #4 thread will also fit the provided screw holes, very slightly looser than the M3s. The case is 18mm (~0.7") thick. I've been considering switching to button head stainless screws, myself...

Sorry for you name Glod* ;)
This thing about reverse top layers is very good idea !
What will be your to version of the top layers ? I'm considering CF on face one and black mate on face 2.
About MX Clear switches, I saw some videos on youtube on how to open MX switch and it looks simple to replace all of the springs. But first I need to try stock MX Clear switches. Maybe I can make a mix with stock string and weaker ones. Do you know which lub may I need to use ? Also I saw that the stock screws which come with the ergodox looks like being very painful. Have you changed yours ?
I'll post pictures of my ergodox once I'll get it fully assembled and functionally.
Krytox is generally the preferred lube and Superlube is a decent second. I believe it's limmy who has some Krytox for sale in the classifieds. You'll also want Victorinox oil or another heavy oil like that for the springs.
I prefer 65g springs for Ergo Clears.
show off! damn that looks so much better than clear. I think it looks way better than the aluminium too. I personally would like that with a darker matte color (no fingerprints!) but i approve of this
i noticed, unsurprisingly, you are rocking the deep dish :)
tenting is highly suggested you just have to be creative though when you mod it to tent, the Kenesis V3 lifters are nice, you have 2 options with them, do some mod so that it looks like it is supposed to be there or just slap some dual lock hard velcro on the V3 and the ergodox and call it a day. of course im sure there is other creative way to achieve the tenting.
the cap nuts look nice but it looks like it would slide all over the place.

That's part of the point of the plastidip over the nuts, keep sliding to a minimum.
Any opinion as to long vs short kinesis stand? I'd like to be able to take it off easily since I want to keep it portable.
I don't really like this white and black Ergodox, it looks too much like an Oreo. ;DThis is a bad thing? Someone must have never had an oreo.

Are there going to be any ways to get group buys for any of these beautiful cases?
Keep calm and wait. I will have a GB once I have worked out some kinks and done with my current GB. What I do fear is the case buy would be stretched as I will be away for 10 weeks+ from late November to end of Jan, so in this phase I would most likely take orders and invoice, so I can get production rolling once my vacation ends, as I would be able to coordinate online but won't be able to get any production done.
Here is my 1 of 2 round 3 ergodoxes.
Additions:
. ergo clear mod
. TH keycaps for the 1x1 keys
. matte white vinyl stickers on the top and bottom (ebay)
. standoffs - 50mm for the bottom and 40mm for the top (ebay)
. mousepad underneath reduces noise
I would like to do the following in the future:
. buy/make custom usb and trrs cables
. get a full set of dcs/oem/cherry keys with legends - I did not like the uniform dsa keys that came with the kitShow Image(http://puu.sh/5a1zN)Show Image(http://puu.sh/5a1zF)

*Funny story actually: MassDrop sent me two sets of classic aluminum plates, instead of 1 classic and 1 full hand. When I notified them, they told me to keep it and they'd send out the full hand plates. Then they actually sent me a complete full hand acrylic case set. When I told them about the mixup, they let me keep that and sent out the actual aluminum plates (should get them today).
I must say, MD's customer service is phenomenal (even if they screwed up my order twice).

I love the red and white! Where did you find the white keys with reddish lettering?
thanks! its the alphakeys from klaxon, mixed with dsa mods I got seperately from SP.
where did you get the bamboo sheets cut? it looks much better than the birch I used. giving the bamboo a coat of varnish would give it a nice shine and bring out the grain better, if you haven't already done so.
looks awesome, with the new top plates and the ergodock. kinda makes me regret not joining the buy for the new alu plates now.
ErgoDox really has to offer acrylic in different colors. I'm kinda tired of stock clear ones, color combos like those look too awesome to not be offered.

Ergodox is the board
Dox designed the ergodox
Dox doesn't make the acrylic cases
You take the files and make the acrylic cases in whatever format you want yourself

Still working on a case for it as I haven't come up with a result that would satisfy me yet :)
BTW. With a black PCB it looks pretty sexy without a case.

I'm wondering what a simple low profile tray with a cover for the teensy/top would look like, leaving most of the top of the pcb exposed, forget the plate.

Looks great czarek, can I ask what kind of keycaps they are? I read somewhere that most people use DSA for their ergodoxes but those larger profiled keys that you have look pretty cool, especially the red ones on the side.
that's awesome work, czarek. with some sanding on the sides, it would look perfect.
Would you have any idea if the pvc case is lighter than the 5 layer acrylic?
current iteration of my ever changing ergodox
i think im going to stick with dsa for now, hyperfuse just looks so amazing on this board, but i change up my ergodox setup like every other week so who knows i may go back to dcs or the SA in a few weeks. i thought the SA profile was too tall for the fullhand case and that they didn't go well with stock red springs, i think SA goes better with a heavier switch, but thats just me.

I really need to dust mine off and get something to tent it with. I've neglected it for a few months now.
I can assure you it's real :) It also has engravings above the keys which are invisible on this photo.
And to be honest this one is probably the best one I've seen so far. Excellent taste while choosing colour theme.
I. Want. One.
yeah like i said in my other topic, "how are you liking the ergodox", If you want to have the hands together and the mouse/trackball/trackpad on the right side you need to tent it, however i have learned that if you put a good amount of space between the two hands (enough for a normal mousepad) and put the mouse/trackball/trackpad in the center you may find that it may work just as well, worth a try to those who have only used the ergodox with the hands next to each other, give it like a couple days spin and see how it works for you guys :)
I really need to dust mine off and get something to tent it with. I've neglected it for a few months now.I'm trying tenting now
That looks really good. Did it come out cheaper than buying from massdrop?
It's more or less same price, but turnaround is much quicker (between one and two weeks) and if you're in EU, you save on import duties which are quite substantial.
Just a note that I'm not making any money on any components apart from the case (which makes me about 20€ which I think is about right for over an hour of CNC machining, also all this money + quite a bit of extra from my side will be spent on RND of the wireless BlueTooth version soon). In fact on first batch of PCBs I was actually loosing money.
I used the full hand for a good 2-3 months and found the full hand is a flawed design, it sits your palms too low, your hands shouldn't be angled up like that, hence why using a palm rest with the classic hand or using no palm rest at all is much better. I know some may disagree with that and that is fine.

(i took off the skull squadron caps a few days ago, i was just playing around with them on the ergodox)
SA makes it actually worse for me which is why commando never ended up staying on my ergodox, the tall profile means my hands are tilted even more up to make up for the height, i have found my hands should be has flat as possible, tented or not tented. as well as the pad/rest should only have your palm resting and not the actual wrist otherwise you cut it off. but thats just me....the kinesis advantage "welled" design also went with this idea

i realize the right ergonomics but i have to rest my palms when i type, i have hand tremors, sometimes very severe (essential tremor diagnosis), it is a pain the ass sometimes for soldering and customizing my keyboards :( but when my palms are rested my fingers are less likely to lose their place, you have to be careful with wrist rests, you don't want to put them actually directly on your wrist (unless you have one of those full arm pads) or you will cut off blood flow i think is what happens, but the pads of my palm seem to work fine and the ergodox allows me to do that.

I'm sorry to hear about the hand tremors. It would make sense why you would be using the palm rests while typing then, though as I had mentioned, there are other problems that could set in eventually (my hands took years before suddenly aching on a daily basis). Soft rests would probably help alleviate the potential problems from doing so.
@Tricheboar; not so much of an excuse - a decent chair helps alot in the long run. I find the arm rests indispensable for using a very tented ergodox.

Traditional blues.
20 years adapted wyse keycaps (work in progress)
Moz 8 layers acrylic case (1.5mm per layer)
Sleeved cables.
Special thanks to JDCarpe and TheChemist for the international proxy.
Tried to type, "First five minutes on my new ergodox" but hit the wrong modifier, and lost my post. So I'm up to ten minutes now.
trying something new this weekAt what point will your ergodoxes be upside down?
this may rustle some jimmies, i present SUPER TENT!

sorry cant find my good camera
used the bottom layers of my full hand case i don't use, it is more stable than it looks, it is quite solid to use and to my surprise comfortable and takes up less space.
nope wrists/palms don't slide off and i actually put less weight on my palms than i usually do.
kenesis actually sells an accessory for their freestyle rubber dome split keyboard that has both hands vertical with no palm support. lol and i think hoggy actually has a couple keyboards that go vertical
i am enjoying this....... need to figure out how to get it less ghetto-rig looking but it is solid so no rush.
My first Ergodox! (Plus first post typed with it). Kit is from czarek (deskthority), MX blues and aluminium plate.

Hi. Finally after so much effort, here is my complete Ergodox from the 3rd Massdrop group buy.Congrats :)
(Attachment Link)
This is really a landmark success for me, since it was my first time to attempt soldering.
You might have noticed the white PCB despite I having bought from Massdrop. That's because I screwed up the first time around :-( due to lack of equipment and skills and know how.
I started with a cheapo iron gun, too large of a solder wire and no tweezer!!! so I couldn't work with the tiny SMDs and I soldered the through hole diodes randomly in the wrong direction!!! screwing up big time.
Since I've invested a lot of time and money so I would like to get it done. I got back on my feet, ordered a new set of PCB from Mechanicalkeyboards.com, electronics from digikeys, got proper equipments, temperature controlled iron, thin solder wire, proper tweezer, and now I could work on SMDs, I work my way step by step, with proper equipment things were much easier. Faced with a few seemingly deadend problems, bad diodes, short circuits producing double keypresses, missing keypresses, desolder and redone dozens of dodgy solder joints. And just today's morning, all keys are producing a single correct keystroke. In no time, case and keycaps came together as my first soldering project, the Ergodox.
Congrats :)
Now that you have both the Kinesis Advantage and the ErgoDox though, could you do a comparison?
This is my recently finished ErgoDox using ALPs switches, in a more ergonomic-shaped style :)

That's probably the coolest, most usable ergodox I've seen. Where did you source the key caps and how much were they?

Best ergonomic benefit kinesis keywell still gets it.
The curvature makes the thumb cluster a bit closer and minimizes overall finger movement.
But I'm tired with its balkiness, abs key caps, and rubber keys, though I've implemented palm key mod and re program function keys away from them.
To me kinesis contoured is a great solution with still many shortcomings. I've type millions of keystroke since I own it for 2 years.
Ergodox maybe a tiny bit less ergonomic with its flat keys. But the total separate half has a lot of potential for placement and tilts.
Much more compact to carry and just a pride to use if self built. Online venders keep popping up offering a complete unit. Transition from kinesis is pretty effortless since the layout and default firmware is quite similar.
My final verdict is still ergodox.
So if you have a ergodox, I don't think you would want a kinesis, unless a much better updated version came along.

Giving my original ErgoDox with lubed reds and black aluminum top some attention, some love, It was in my laptop bag for like 3 months.
key caps are Cherry POM from 11900 and DSA PBT for the keys that caps dont fit in, nothing fancy trying to avoid messing up my good sets. plus "scoops, **** yeah"

Last night I fashioned the foam so it wasn't as wobbly, and typing on a tilted ErgoDox is by far superior. If you can, try tilting it up by an additional 20–30° and compare.

Does anyone with an Alps 'dox know whether the non-plate layers need to be adjusted in thickness to compensate for the different thickness of the Alps plates? There are hybrid alps/mx plates, so 1.5mm should be fine, I would think, if thats how thick the plate pieces are

That seems right to me. I had several people on reddit tell me ~ 4mm

How stable are those legs? They look like they are bowing a bit.
How long does it take to get use to split keyboards? If you can touch type using a standard technique? Maybe 30 minutes.

What is the most affordable ergo keyboard on the market?Ergodone was pretty cheap, though I think that group buy is closed. You can get "fake" ergodoxes off Taobao for a low price.

In a strange way it looks really good on your ErgoDox . I find XDA quite ugly but in this case it looks good.
