Its been on tech news forever, but never really got the feel of it until I looked into expanding my storage.

You might be better off waiting until "BlackFriday" - last year I got a 2tb external drive for $60 @ Target. I just cant wait til the day that decent size SSD drives become affordable

Wait a minute, here. What happened to HDD prices? I got a 1TB drive a long while ago for $75. Now the cheapest one on Newegg is $140. There's no reason the price of HDDs should go up.

Hard drive manufacturers have production facilities in thailand that were hit with flooding. The media said "OMG we are going to run into hard drive shortages" causing the increase in prices.

**** that. It's like that time that one RAM manufacturer folded. RAM prices were through the roof for 2 years. Luckily, they're back in normal range now.

Ok I didn't realize that was the reason for the high prices that is alarming! Well I guess I will have to wait for things to reach their equilibrium before upgrading to a larger SSD

SSD prices shouldn't increase. I believe the flooding is only affecting HDD prices.

I really do hope that SSD prices stay independent of the HDD prices. In that case it could even help to accelerate SSD adoption as they get more attractive in relation.

I got a 2tb Seagate at Target for $85 last week. It was an external, but I opened it and pulled it so I could mount it internally. It turned out to be one of their better new model sata 6gbps drives. The same bare drive was listed online for around $160... pretty funny.

I bought several 2tb hdds this summer for $60 each on sale, now theyre up to $230!!!

on another note, i just won a 4tb external raid drive by buffalo...anyone want it? :)
Its 400 new but i wouldnt sell it for that much

It's going to take like 12-18 months for prices to revert back to where they should be had the Thailand flooding not happened.  Personally annoying, I'll probably need to stuff some more in my Drobo before then.

I got a Agility 3 120 GB and never looked back. Unless you're storing a server full of prawns or pirating Blu-Ray movies, or you have some other special circumstances (specifically where you'd need a pile of storage, such as a server) you don't need more than 120 GBs. This is a fact. just delete programs/games you don't use very much, and if you have music/video/pics you need archived, put em on DVDs, Flash media or the like.

I hate it when people are like YEAH I GOT 7 TB OF STORAGE IN MY LEET GAMING RIG!!!

Well what good is it going to do you other than having the most cluttered PC in history. Just manage your data intelligently and you'll never have any need for anywhere near that amount of storage.

That's bad advice, putting data on DVDs and flash media is more expensive and less secure than RAID.  I use an SSD though.  Along with a couple hard drives, one for heavy frameserving, media editing etc. and one for downloading appalling masses of pornography onto.  And a Drobo for archival.  Best of all worlds.

I feel sorry for the citizens of Thailand, but the price hike really sucks. I might end up needing to build a new computer for work soon, and it's really hard to justify paying $169 for a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint...

Hmm, 120GB isn't much, considering single folder on my HDD:
186 Gt (200*136*846*496 tavua)
149*067 tiedostoa, 7*362 kansiota

The 200GB partition is getting bit small. Any guesses what it is?

so any idea when hd prices gonna come back down to normal price? i.e. what "used" to be a good deal for

drives? i think the last drive i bought a year ago was a wd 2tb for 80 (it was an external drive that i ripped open and it was a regular 2tb hd in it).

i don't keep up with the news so this will be cool to know.

From what I have heard, it could be as long as a couple of years or so to go back to the normal price..

A lot of people keep their entire music collection and movies library on their computer, which causes the most space usage obviously. So I am sure there are plenty of users who require large space capacities. Though I have to say the standard HDD space in most computers nowadays is way too much - especially for the low- to mid-range laptops. How is the average consumer going to use or need just close to 500GB of storage space?

Hmm, so maybe it was a good thing I accidently didn't get to return the RMA of my WD from amazon that arrived knocking about loose in a cardboard box.  I had them send the replacement first but had to put a deposit on my cc - I think I can still RMA the original though ... It would just essentially have meant that I bought a second drive without intending to, but looks that may have been a good thing.  I didn't know anything about this before reading this thread but was considering a new HDD anyway.

well not so bad you can go buy a external 2tb from walmart right now for 140$ not to far off old retail price in store. Also I just picked up 2 2TB Hitchi's from newegg for $109.
