New Here and First Mechanical Keyboard Too
« on: Sat, 20 October 2012, 01:47:32 »
Hi Everyone,

Greetings from Los Angeles!  I just started reading this forum in the past couple of weeks and digging the enthusiasm and science that's being dropped around here.

Also just picked up my first mechanical keyboard, a Corsair K60 at Fry's a few days ago.  After reading around it was that or the CM Storm Rapid. Unfortunately Fry's only had the blue switch equipped Storm so picked up the k60, which has (mostly... heh!) red switches.  While I liked the blue switches (they remind me of baby versions of the old IBM mechanical keyboards I used to use in college back in the late 80's), I got to try the K60 and liked the smooth but distinctive feel of the red switches.  As others have pointed out... it's like typing on a cloud of boobies.  And then there is gaming, for which they seem to work just dandy.  Oh, also briefly tried a keyboard with brown switches which didn't leave much of an impression on me but it was brief.

I love typing and gaming on the k60, but unfortunately I have had the repeating key bug happen to me twice now since buying it and from what I've been reading around there may not be a firmware solution to it, which is kind of unacceptable.  This, in combination with the lack of red switches for the function and document navigation keys may make me return it and order a CM Storm with red switches someplace on-line, as Fry's does not carry the red switch equipped Storms from what I gather on their web site.  They certainly didn't have them at the Anaheim store I bought the K60 at.

Well... I will miss the lovely aluminum plate the K60 switches are planted in, the all around subtle yet distinctive styling and the highly convenient multimedia controls.  That volume roller is boss.  Maybe next time Corsair! So much good here, yet they missed it by > < much!

Also, I am looking forward to swapping out keys on the CM with ones from WASD and elsewhere.  Possibly other mods... aluminum case maybe?  The Filco ones I saw (that may fit the CM innards?) were mighty pricey though!

Anyway,

Cheers all!

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Welcome and where are you in L.A.?  Every now and then we'd have a get together here in SoCal so you should definitely join since you get to try out different keyboards/switches there.  :)
