I saw the thing a little and went to the conclusion that it's some kind of modern bilboquet. But what's the idea behind it? How do you determine a winner?

Similar, yes.  And a winner is determined as follows: one person sets the "trick", and the others have three chances to copy it.  If they fail, they receive a letter.  (much like 'horse').  The person who sets the trick then rotates, and this continues until you're down to two people left, at which point you have to do it twice I believe (I'm sure dorkvader or Lingj can explain better).

There may be other competitive things too.  I just started doing this two days ago, so I'm far from the expert.  I'm just all aboard the hype train.

Can't believe I just now found this topic!

Just to be clear: that's just the "street kendama" rules, my room-mates and I made up for our first competition (over the last remaining pancake, which after 45 minutes of furious Kendama-ing, was rather cold. It tasted like victory.)

I rock an extremely heavily used ozora kendama in natural woodgrain. I'm currently saving up for another one though.

does the paint/ finish get worn out over time?

Depending on the quality of the kendama, it depends. Some of the paint has been wearing off where the hole of the tama is but other than that, just marks and indentations from my fail attempts.
It also depends on your technique. Mine is all beat up partially because my roommates and I weren't catching it softly enough.

Where is dorkvader aka kendama king aaka #1 during all this development??!

You gotta PM me! I can't read all of GH. sadly, I suspect hoffmanmyster and lingj have already surpassed me

how is the ozora compared to the tribute or classic? I'm not even gonna consider KROM until I feel like I know what I'm doing. I want the Ozora Horse haha

I believe dorkvader has an Ozora which was his natural color one. I think his string was super long but it felt just as light as the Krom.

Yep, ozora woodgrain. The string is competition length, as the kendama is JKA certified.
(Attachment Link)

Looking so fresh! We should all take pictures of our kendamas after they're worn in/battered up.
Need to photograph mine :p

i need one for the left hand.

Since I can't get cup to spike as fast as y'all I'm focusing on holding the tama and doing tricks with the ken. Lighthouse to spike, etc.

If anyone breaks a string on a cheaper Kendama and doesn't want to go through the hassle of replacing the string, I'll buy it from you.   :thumb:

I have plans...   ;)

That second trick was much easier than the first one I found. Combining them was fun, in both orders.

I'm having a lot of trouble with it. It might be my kendama, but I can't get it to come up straight, it's always at the same angle it naturally dangles at. I'm sure with some work I'll have it though.

where do you look up all these new kendama skills?

I'm getting better (slowly since I don't practise that much) at the tama-holding skills. I've done the lighthose a few times, and I'm getting really consistent at that reverse-thing where I swing the ken up and spike it into the tama. I just need to combine the two.

http://sweetskendamas.com/tipstricks/ has a lot to choose from. Earthturn is super satisfying to land. I plan on doing more tama tricks when I get a tama that has tacky paint. My Krom is still pretty smooth.

'cause ozora wins tournaments.

'specially woodgrain (unpainted) ones.

I landed exactly one lunar yesterday. They're tough! I also did a lighthouse, then the flip to spike. Trying to hop it to pen grip and swing-in after that's but it's been hard.

Also need to tain my family to hold the camera steady :p

Good to know the balance of Krom isn't too off. I look at them and have to wonder.

Limited runs of the kendama is what makes them expensive. Also: being JKA approved, they play very well, and have unique colors add to that. Some more information

I'll try! I just don't think my tricks are good enough to post right now. If you're interested in a getting a kendama, I would recommend to start with either a KendamaUSA Tribute model, or an ozora. Personally I would start with an ozora because they last quite a while, and there's a reason why it's approved for Japanese tournaments cause it's good!

We need to challenge the other KB forums to kendama battles now that the GH kendama team is kicking off.
