Geekhack magic players
« on: Wed, 22 October 2014, 09:19:25 »
I'm curious how many other geekhackers play magic the gathering and which formats they play.

I'm primarily an EDH and legacy player and I'm currently working on putting together a standard deck as well.

I play EDH and draft.... Not very competitive at all
The meta in the group I play in likes to primarily **** around in EDH which makes it great for casuals as well.

This is my current deck for EDH

The people I play edh with are pretty cutthroat for the most part. While we all are there to have fun, we all have fun ****ing each other over.

Currently I have 2 edh decks together.

A UB control list:
Wydwen
and a UR artifact combo list:
Nin

And I'm playing high tide in legacy.

I haven't played Magic in a long, long time.  Like, stopped playing when Fallen Empires came out.  Had a really nice 60 card Type 1 land kill deck that I used in tournaments that was only Beta, Arabian Nights, a few Legends and one Antiquities card.

I have a feeling we'll see a lot of this from people on the forums. I know I was that way until I got back into it when I met a bunch of people who played at college.

I sold that deck in 1997 for $2K in cash (it was the last of the Magic cards I got rid of).  I'm sure it's worth a lot more now.

Suppose I could make a proxy deck to play with it again - but I haven't seen any game stores around anymore to play at.

You will find people playing both. I personally only play in paper since I have enough computer centric hobbies.

Suppose I could make a proxy deck to play with it again - but I haven't seen any game stores around anymore to play at.

Vintage / Type 1 is very  difficult to find in paper, and even then most events would only allow 10 or so proxies. Currently you could get significantly more than 2k, but I'm sure people never expected some of the cards to be worth nearly as much as they are now.

If you are looking to play, the community has seen a significant amount of growth over the last 3-4 years and I'm willing to bet there is at least 1 shop in your area.

Currently have a trade confirmed for survival of the fittest which is probably the hardest of them to find.

I have all the cheap stuff for (Candelabra-less) legacy High Tide. Next is fetches, forces, and flusterstorms..
If I'm playing I prefer paper, but if I'm not I'd rather hop on Twitch.tv and watch mtgo.

If you can't get a hold of the candles, it may be worth checking out the solidarity lists people are currently brewing. With the print of dig through time, I've seen quite a few people brewing new lists for solidarity instead of sticking to the time spiral and candle plan.

Did anyone bother to go to comic con in London Ontario? I live there so I actually had reason to go there. Don't know if anyone bothered to go there but the feature matches were intense. (my head got caught in the camera one :)) )

Thanks for the idea. I haven't done a ton of playtesting yet but I'm pretty happy with my list. Cloud Faerires/Snap can still get there even if it's a turn slower on average and doesn't play into artifact hate.

I like the ideas of decks (low interaction, reanimation, abusing bad cards, etc) more than them actually being competitive.  :p

I play 4 of sensei's top main in addition to my set of candles. Artifact hate is never the problem :P People still usually side their mainboard artifact hate out in favor of something else. Abrupt decay is unfortunate when it hits, but it doesn't really slow me down. If it's pre combo, sure I lost mana but I'm still digging for the cards I actually need, in combo I just activate it on the spot. Top is effectively immune, but it eats counter spells constantly.

Sounds a lot like the legacy deck 'cheeri0s', except they usually aren't playing gaea's cradle.

Second sunrise was banned in modern, and since then eggs has basically disappeared. The deck is significantly worse without second sunrise.

Is second breakfast still a thing?

Second sunrise was banned in modern, and since then eggs has basically disappeared. The deck is significantly worse without second sunrise.

Hmm. Looks like I'm going to build it!

Casual play only though.

It takes forever to combo off, so keep that in mind.

I used to be huge into MTG, was even good enough to play in the US Nationals in 2002 and 2003. I got back into it briefly a few years ago because the college I was attending is super duper nerd heaven extreme, but haven't played again since the Innistrad block.

Man, you guys are H-Core! I can't keep up with your MTG lingo :( I literally just started playing a month ago and am currently building a white-green deck. I also have Jeskai but haven't really used that one yet. I think I'm having more fun searching for loose cards and building my deck than actually playing!

Theory crafting is half the fun of the game. I only really get to play maybe once or twice a week. And while I've been in Indiana I haven't been able to play my favorite format at all :'(

I actually really want to try out this game. I've enjoyed playing some games that are sort of like super dumbed-down versions of magic and want to do the real thing

You can upload an mtg decklist there and play for free.
We can play together if you want.

I haven't bought any cards since Myrrodin, but I played a little last summer.

I have so many cards going back to like Urza's Legacy... Just have no time or anybody to play with... :'(
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

The thing isn't governed by rules at all really.
So just make sure you don't mess up with your plays since you can accidentally make an illegal play.

It's not letting me log in for some reason. I can make an account, but nothing happens when I click to log in, like it doesn't register. hmm

If you are actually interested in learning I would very much so recommend picking up duals of the planeswalkers 2014 NOT 2015, apparently 2014  is much better. It is a game on steam and all the consoles which is really good for learning the basics of the game.

This game is great if you are a beginner. This is what i used to teach my wife how to play. It is cheap during the sales.
