Did this last night, as seen in the "What did you add to your keyboard" thread (the under-LEDs). Ignore the crappy set, I'm putting Miami on it.

Again, I really do love GON's boards.

It's not much GON apart from the PCB, but here you go.
I have yet to find an appropriate picture thread for random keyboards anyway.

Nice. I really like the gold/orange lights. Now it makes me wonder if I should have chosen the blue/purple for my GON build project. Hmmmm...

I felt like the purple plate was limiting my options enough to settle for orange. But yeah, I like the idea of sip sockets myself and would probably use them in a future build.

Yep. I never thought of that option of LED. Now I need to re-think my build.  :thumb:

All I have is a cell phone camera so it'd be garbage. I hate to say it but I think the GMK ABS sounds better than the pitch black Ivan PBT set that used to be on here (also scoops not bars which is always nice  :p). Sounds way softer than with pbt caps. I only bottom out a bit so most of the sound is upstroke noise.

Also lubed 78g gateron clears so no click.

Hah, I can relate to ABS sounding better than PBT. I think it also has kind of a "warmer" feel compared to PBT because it's a softer material and more malleable, I guess. It sounds a little ridiculous to say, but I always get that feeling when I compare the two types. PBT is nice though, still. I still need to try POM sometime.

Ahh, HHKB layouts are so sick. :D

The middle layer is Polycarb, that can be only be CNC machined. Top and bottom are anodised alu, also CNC machined. This is why the price is higher than a winkeyless.kr one. It's just something else, even if from the outside they look the same they are not.

Gon = CNC'ed polycarbonate.
Winkeyless = machine cut acrylic.
KMAC2 - Matrix Lab 8XV2.0 - TGR Jane v2 CE - KBD8X MKII - Meridian - Matrix Lab Noah - Fallacy x2 - MGA Standard - Geon Frog mini - Amano - Ciel60 - Prime_Elise - Matrix Lab 6XV3.0 aka Corsa

Yeah, the kind of machining that goes into it is what raises the price, and also the thicker plate that's used for the switches which requires more machining to set notches for the retaining tabs, then the countersunk screw-mounting positions and the aluminum feet mounting holes.

Poly is apparently hard to machine as well. I've taken a dremel to PC to make inserts for my Duck Lightpad, though. :P And that turned out nice! Nah, I know it can't be compared. It was also hell to do by hand, haha.

You can certainly see the quality in GON's machine work, but for it to rival the price of heavy aluminum cases is still kind of crazy to me.

It's weird I know, but the amount of machining is almost the same and I think Polycarbonate is almost as expensive as alu. But I think it's the psychological factor, one is "plastic" the other one is "heavy metal"  :cool:

Hmm, I have no idea on the prices! I got my tinted 1/4" polycarbonate sheets for a pretty cheap price (each were wide enough to cover a 60% size, since I originally planned on making my own middle layer for hwood's sandwich-style carbon fiber cases). I think around $4 or so? It was from a quality manufacturer of lexan. :)

But I dunno! I definitely agree that there's a psychological component with the weight and solidity of a heavy aluminum case vs "plastic," though I do think highly of the acrylic 60% cases I've seen (like the one run in a GB by Dulphin), but they are usually pretty cheap! I'm not sure what a full poly case would cost in comparison. :-X

I like the acrylic cases too, I think it comes up to what theme you want for your keyboard. In some cases alu just doesn't work at all while in other cases it is perfect. I'm a 60% user, I like my board lightweight so I usually stick to a standard Poker case, but I also have a couple of boards with alu cases and a next project with an acrylic one (a layered SPRiT case). I rotate the boards depending on the mood I have, each is built with a specific theme. I'll have to post my collection at some point as I have reached the point where I can say I have the boards and caps I wanted to have and now I can just sit back and relax, and try to improve each of them by subtle switch tuning, lights and stuff like that.
Forgot nice cables :) I've always left the cables on 2nd place and that is wrong ! Need to concentrate on cables matching the themes next :)

They look very cool, but, still, a couple of aluminum plates with a poly-carbonate separator should be better priced.

The design and thought that goes into GON's cases is what makes them worth it, IMO.  Similar plate-cases don't seem to have the same attention to detail that GON has (switch notches cut into plate, etc).  Sure, they don't weigh a ton, but they're really well designed and built.

Def true. GON definitely outclasses all other contenders when it comes sandwich style cases in terms of quality and attention to detail, no doubt.

Amazing as always, naas.  I have to wonder how many times you've swapped the caps on this board.  It makes a great blank slate and you use it a lot for your keyset showcase shots.  ;)

thanks. :)  yeah, GON boards are awesome if you like low profile boards.  just be prepared to wait awhile if you order one, heh.

thanks, hoff. :)  haha i change caps for both my home and work boards pretty regularly, since it's like getting a brand new board every time!  my coworkers think i'm a bit odd with this stuff.  i nudged a couple of them into getting mech boards, but they bought their QFRs and were pretty much done after that.  oh well. :)
a cute stray cat combination that comes out happily when you look at your face is cute

Looks amazing naasfu. As everyone has said, you're GON is such a great showcase for new things. Not to mention the back drops you use.

I love it man.

Gorgeous.  :-X

P.S. What is that surface underneath the board? It looks like the non-slip material on the bottom of a desk mat or something.

One of the few ANSI sets with the international alternate characters on that I have seen posted, nice.

Exactly, it does have the US International character set. I use it every day, and I can tell there is not actual need for the alternate legends to be actually printed; I know exactly where they are, at least the ones I use more frequently, but they look cool. In the other hand, as I prefer double shot Cherry caps I would never get a set like this, unfortunately.

The color combo on that is close to perfect - I'm not even keen on green. :eek:
