Pretty sure this is just a promotional icon and not the official windows icon. Or at least I sure hope so.

i don't really mind what microsoft uses for their os icon... as long as the keysets have novelty keys that i can replace it with on my keyboard.

It was basically the same from Windows XP to Windows 7, except that it was on a round button in Windows Vista.

I agree. They could just have made it into a two-colours and kept the shape.

Vom. God I hope they don't use that at launch, they should just stick with the W8 logo. Looks classy.

That 9 couldn't possibly be the new one, it's not actually a, you know... window. MS's marketing isn't that stupid. But what if... <_< hmmm

... and then Microsoft does it for real.

BTW, Microsoft's web site is making it extraordinarily difficult for me to find and link to an original press release... Convoluted and difficult, just like most Microsoft products...
My mom was without her Hotmail account for two months because they had imposed two-factor authentication on her and not explained what it was or how it worked, and we had to jump through hoops to make it possible to log in again, and it could only be reactivated at the first of the following months... And you can see this pattern in a lot of other Microsoft software as well. I mean... is it company policy to make software user-unfriendly???  It looks sometimes like a conspiracy to keep people with MCSE certifications employed ...

As soon as I upgraded to Win8 I installed Classic Shell and I have been happy with it. Metro UI doesn't bother me much because I never fuss with Metro apps anyways, it just feels like a faster Win7 to me now.

It is good to see that Microsoft is trying to give users the best of both worlds by offering tiles within the start menu for those people who actually found them useful in Win8.

Post by: mogo on Sat, 04 October 2014, 16:10:45
Yeah, I'm one of them. I like that some tiles give information at a glance, like weather, mail, and calendar. I like the way you can dock the tile programs on your desktops too. I thought it would be unnecessary and weird, but I grew to like it a lot. Metro is the world where all my functional and productive things can happen. The desktop is where I do all my grade-A ****ing around.

From what I've seen the only function that I would use on occasions is the multiple desktop feature. Everything else looked unappealing.

Great upgrade? Nothing. From Windows 8, there are a few, such as the return of Start Menu, the windows "Apps" running like native desktop programs.

From Windows 7? Nothing out of the ordinary, many users will benefit from the virtual desktops and better visibility of currently open windows, but as a user of DexPot, I doubt I would use it as much as it is much more powerful and a lot more customisable with built-in hotkeys manager. The real reason it is an upgrade over Windows 7 is that support for Windows 7 terminates in January.

But there is no windows 9.

. As well as the fact the reason for the jump in number was due to fringe cases where software devs were checking for 9x (95/98) versions of Windows, which would have falsely triggered incompatibilities. People have pointed out they could have named it 'Nine' instead, but they chose '10' - not that Windows naming has closely followed each new version anyway.

I'd think if software has trouble with "I'm looking for a "9" there", giving it a letter would give it a fit.
