So I this on DT:

I'm totally clueless on the sort of thing, I've found some of the parts:

,
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/3365%2F20%20300SF/MC20G-5-ND/145444
What am I missing, what wiring should I get?

Any wire is fine. There’s nothing special about it. Stranded or solid, and whatever gauge, doesn’t really matter. Lowpoly used a ribbon cable to keep things neat and organized, but that’s also not necessary.
One thing you do need is a microcontroller board. The easiest to use for this is probably the Teensy 2.0:

I have done the same mod with lowpoly's guide. Posting here so if you have any questions and post here I can help answer
Teensy 2.0 as recommended by jacobolus above is one of the more common microcontrollers we use round here, in conjunction with

I used 0.8mm copper wire. It came "heavily tinned". If I were to do the mod again, I'd use it for the horizontal wiring too (and cut the diodes shorter). Electrically there's no difference but when handling, the diode legs are soft.
