Cherry MX Clear with MX Brown on the pinkies.
« on: Tue, 02 April 2013, 21:08:22 »
Has anyone tried this?:
Cherry MX Browns (55 cN) on just the pinkies
Cherry MX Clears (65 cN) on the rest of the keyboard

I am fairly heavy handed on the keyboard and like tactile feed back.
But my left pinky gets uncomfortable after typing a few minutes.
Would lighter springs on the pinky help?
Does mixing different spring forces on a keyboard have any negatives?

Thank you for your input.

it will feel very strange at first mostly because the tactile bump from the clears is like huge compared to the brown ones.

just try it and if it doesn't work change it back?
:)

you wouldn't notice it too much unless you pay conscious attention to the spring weights. but of course you're going to have to go through an acclimatisation period. I do a similar weighted layout on one of my keyboards, except its more subtle. (55g for pinkies, 65g for the index fingers and 62g for those in between). its interesting, but i wouldn't call it a life-changing experience, though it may help with fatigue.

Personally, I'd want to try this with the Browns on the ring fingers, because I use Colemak, and I find myself accidentally pressing I or R (the ring-finger homerow keys) because I'm trying to hit capslock (which I've reprogrammed to be a backspace).  So, if I make those lighter, but still have the resistance, I can sink them in a little without hitting the key, right?

i have ergo clears (clears and brown springs) on
a-z

and i have browns on everything else

i have a kinesis so i don't use pinkies for anything other than (1qaz) and (p;/) and the occasional "

shifting is done with thumbs.

i did think about just using browns for the pinkies, to "lessen" the bump, but i just did go through with it for whatever reason.

New fresh clears bottom out at 85-90

New fresh brown around 60-65

I tried it a while back, though the pictures didn't survive the GH meltdown: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=16351.0 (see the "Update" section).

I wouldn't mix different kinds of switches personally. It sounds weird when you type.
Different weight springs would make more sense. I believe some people have done this already.

Yes, a combination of clears and browns works well. Also done the spring thing a couple times (see http://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=628).

I have a Green with Brown for the pinkies.  Turned out that I needed to also put Green in the Enter.

I think the feeling between browns and clears are too different for me, Personally I would just uniform the clear stems and change the spring weights. Then it would become an MX version of Topre Variable. LOL
