[video] Hand-wiring a custom keyboard
« on: Tue, 21 October 2014, 07:06:00 »

some more details:

- at the beginning I'm making ghetto green (blue sliders, black springs)
- the whole process took approx 8 hours (in 2 days)
- the controller is a teensy 2
- firmware is hasu's TMK
- the bottom plate is steel, the switches plate is aluminum, the sides are made of wood (it is called Elf-board)
- the keycap set is DSA Retro
- the glue I use for the USB port is a fast-curing time epoxy glue
- the soundtrack is: #1 Kotetsu Jeeg opening theme, #2 Tank! by Yoko Kanno

if you have more questions don't hesitate to ask!

ENJOY!

I have a question: When I grow up, can I build keyboards like you?

Matt3o: do you have a wire stripper tool? If not, I recommend it. Instead of scraping sections of wire insulation off with a utility knife, you can just scoot the insulation along with the wire stripper; takes only a few seconds to prepare each of those columns that way.

Matt3o:  Out of curiosity, what gauge wire are you using?

the black one is the thickest, 0.6mm so I can bend it easily. The color ribbon I don't know exactly, I believe it's a standard size, in the 0.4mm range.

Was gonna say the same, using a scalpel like that is really bad, wire strippers don't usually cost that much.

Other than that, nice job, I read through most of your topic on DT too, enjoyed it very much.

no I don't have a wire stripper. I tried one (borrowed) but it wasn't working very well with multiple cuts and such short wires. it really doesn't take that much to manually peel the wires with a scalpel.
