Halverson, that's some serious hardware for desoldering :O. I might have to invest in one of those one day.

Haha, good point, Halverson. I spend all this money on keyboards, then have crap soldering equipment. I really need to upgrade to a Hakko from this Radio Shack junk. :)

metafour, I found a way to pop the tabs open far enough that they stay open while I'm opening the other side. With the dental pick, I can open them fairly quickly with either unmounted switches, or on PCB mounted ones.

I have been using the radio Shack bulb style desoldering iron to desolder wyse boards. Maybe I'm not doing it right but I have been able to get about 2 boards per tip so far. If I were desoldering something I wanted to reuse I would probably change the tip a little sooner. I did the same thing last night jd, went to radio Shack and bought all the tips they had.

I get some serious hand cramps from using that bulb though

No way around that, I'm afraid. Need to get a desoldering station with a vacuum here. :)

Yes, the radioshack desolder tips are crap. They are made of brass so they just melt. The quicker you move with it the faster they seem to destruct, at least for me. They used to make them of steel and they lasted a really long time.

is there a better low cost option for a desoldering iron that you know of? Or another brand of tips that are better and fit the RS irons?

I haven't found anything that looked comparable for ease of use yet that is not 10x as much. Haven't found any alternate tips yet either. I don't use mine that much as I tend to stay away from plate mount as much as possible.

Dem LEDs.

I find LEDs to be very hard to pull off because they are very easy to make really really gaudy. I'm not sure I like them here, but I think that there is something to be said about being lit up like Las Vegas.

It looks nice. Though with the orange theme I would have stuck with all warm color led (yellow, orange and red only) personally. Backlight without the led keycap does look best. Gives it a nice effect without being so in your face and overwhelming.

Those Smile! keycaps are so cute :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. The start of my Unicorn vomit keys, muahahaha.

On a side note, wow the print on the gaming cluster is already starting to wear off the keys. Really well built board, but they have definitely used a cheap printing method on the keycaps. Glad I ordered a set from WASD.

Although a slightly deeper yellow would look better ;)

There are many sets of WASD keycaps you can get, most colours, most printing styles.

The yellow looks quite a bit better in person, the flash on my fiancees camera makes everything look like crap and when you turn it off everything comes out blurry, the camera on my Ipad is just as bad. I really need to invest in a decent camera.

This^ I have the same one and would love to know. If they're PBT, what keys did you use for the R Shift & tilde?

They're both PBTs. My white set has 1.75 R1 shift. Dark grey set I used the capslocks as a substitute. Tilde is just standard R1 key.

Before I get bombarded with PM again, white set has never been on sale, and no I won't sell my spare sets.

Thank You laffindude! Are the whites thick/thin, cherry/oem profile? I'm don't think any thick cherry white blanks exist, but wanted to ask so I can make my Pure look similar :P

Edit: Woah wait, where did you get "dark gray" PBT and what kind are they?

They're both OEM profile thin caps. I know SP has the molds to do 1.75 shifts. So you could theoretically get them to do a white PBT set for Pures.
Dark grey is from Keyboard King. I know Project D was/is? selling a set or 2, since I took him to the shop while he was here and he got a few spare sets (he didn't buy extra capslock though). They're the same dark grey used on the newer Vortex PBT boards.

You are my new hero laffindude! I knew about the Keyboard King caps that PD has, but they didn't look dark gray to me with his single cap photo comparison. Anyway, it's much easier to see the color with your full cap photo and I'm in the process of trying to pick up that last set now lol. I've been searching for something darker than Imsto gray PBT, but lighter than KBC Black for my soon to be here poker, and it looks like these keyboard king caps (thin/oem) are about as good as it gets. Hopefully we'll see thick dye sub black on dark gray in the future, but I think these will hold me over. Thanks again! :)

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=37801.msg747292#msg747292 see picture vs black PBT there.

Before anyone ask again. The factory engraved Pure PBT set is made of unobtainium.
