Title: GeekHack Kendama Team
Post by: HoffmanMyster on Mon, 14 July 2014, 15:11:34
In case you missed the memo, Kendama is basically the coolest thing other than keyboards.  The fever spread all over KeyCon West 2014, and if you watched the streams hopefully you've caught the bug as well.

I'm the noobiest kendamer here at GH, so I'm probably not the best person to make this thread, but whatever!  We're all hardcore addicts now!

With the recent crowning of dorkvader as the GH Kendama King after the KeyCon Tournament, let's be sure to show him the respect he deserves.

This thread is for anything and everything kendama.

Go go go!  Let's get hyped!!

I saw the thing a little and went to the conclusion that it's some kind of modern bilboquet. But what's the idea behind it? How do you determine a winner?

I did, at least to help give it momentum. Not sure if I will try it, but if not it's a vote well deserved anyway!

Similar, yes.  And a winner is determined as follows: one person sets the "trick", and the others have three chances to copy it.  If they fail, they receive a letter.  (much like 'horse').  The person who sets the trick then rotates, and this continues until you're down to two people left, at which point you have to do it twice I believe (I'm sure dorkvader or Lingj can explain better).

There may be other competitive things too.  I just started doing this two days ago, so I'm far from the expert.  I'm just all aboard the hype train.

It reminds me too much of stuff like devil sticks, but all the videos I saw of kendama were just guys throwing the apparatus in the air and catching it. And then the 'trick' came in the form of sometimes it turns a little in the air. Sorry I just don't get it, **** looks really dumb. What are the tricks? I'll stop crapping this thread.

It's just a pastime thing, it goes way back. It's not meant to be a groundbreaking form of entertainment, just something silly to do if you're killing time with buds or what not.

What are the tricks? What is the skill? Please explain how this is more than tossing a wooden ball on a string randomly in the air. Unless this is actually a huge troll and that's the joke, in which case well played .

It is "just" tossing the ball and catching it.  But it's not that easy.  And then you do transfers from one cup to the next, spiking (catching the ball on the pointy end) and way more complicated tricks and it gets insane.

I think one problem with these videos is that the people are at a really high level so some of the tricks almost seem unimpressive unless you've actually tried kendama.  But having done it for a couple days, I know how insanely hard it would be to accomplish those tricks.

ACtualllly... the mechanics of these obsessions are always the same..

it's known as Escapism through extreme focus.

When you watch a movie, practice typing, practice sports..  drink alcohol

The motivations are the same.. to escape the tedium of daily life, and the constant signs that life and living is repetitive.

Through utilizing extreme focus.... look at how the player described it in the video.. "the time when the ball is in the air, and you make the hook,  it's like nothing else matters, time slows down, and when the ball catches, you're back to reality". -paraphrase

This is essentially the mildest form of drug addiction / dependence..  Only it's less likely to spiral out of control, because well "it's mild"...

So if we look at the pathway more simply..   it starts as a "state of urgency", you force yourself into a state of alert, "it's imperative" that you get the ball on the stick...  this takes you into the NOW, and away from all other thoughts, (some of which) may be more important/pressing..

Then, when the ball clicks,  it's a moment of elation, a reward system that you give yourself, a shot of serotonin.. a RELIEF...

So. in summary.. what is kendama, an escape,  how does it reward,  by causing you short term stress, then instant elation.

SAME mechanic as video games sans computer and (Trichotillomania), hahaha

I'm not here to argue whether the Kendama practice may be beneficial or useless or fun or anything else..

but you can not deny that there is a concrete answer to WHY do it..... (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/cool-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862496)

That's a very interesting perspective! I am a fan of that school of thought. I see more merit in the long-term aspect of these types of hobbies. I like seeing progress and knowing that I've become better at some thing. It's even cooler when there are people around to encourage and acknowledge each other's skills/growth.

WHY DO WE EXIST TP? WHY?

I'm glad you've asked.. I've made some movements on this.

We exist as a chain of events from the beginning..

The only reason we can ask the question " WHY ", is because we lack comprehensive understanding of the universe.

To better illustrate this point...  probability is actually an illusion.. everything that has happened and will happen  is of absolute certainty..  but as we are not ourselves the complete system, we can only GUESS (probability) at what may happen, that is a limitation of our consciousness / brain/ physiology/ size, but NOT of reality.

Reality is complete, its rules are explained wholly and completely to itself, it does not digress..

Human thought-digresses, at least our perception of human-thought through human-thought does, because it is an incomplete reality where the concept of digressing is possible.

That is to say.. there is a solution. From OUR perspective that solution is "Everything else + YOU (the observer)"

However, while you can BE part of the solution, you will never perceive it until either total collapse of the universe, or heat-death...

When either conditions are met, we have on one hand singularity, and the other, nothingness..

Those are the two pivotal points where both the Rules of the universe and the universe itself are meaningless because all is explained..

That's a very interesting perspective! I am a fan of that school of thought. I see more merit in the long-term aspect of these types of hobbies. I like seeing progress and knowing that I've become better at some thing. It's even cooler when there are people around to encourage and acknowledge each other's skills/growth.

Yes.. human beings are designed to become addicted to "progress bars."

Like I said, motivational mechanisms are behind nearly everything you do.

Why are Mobas and Fpses so addictive, because they give you stress, and reward, and at a much faster rate than Real LIFE, where everything operates more slowly.

You mentioned social aspects..  this is a throwback to an evolutionary strategy for cooperation.. It also increases the odds that you will find a mate.. which is why people have the propensity to seek social engagements in the first place..

So when you combine all of these elements of motivation, your brain perceives it as "quickly" carrying out the motions of human life, although in truth, you're not really doing that..

BUT.. today... because we have so much excess capacity in supplying food/water,  it's not imperative that EVERYONE go be a farmer.. THUS... we have channeled the excess human capacity into exploring other things.. such as games.. and thoughts..

you can't replicate goku with asian straight hair..  straight Hair does not have that kind of mass..

In truth, only black people can replicate goku's hair.. because only their hair has the 3D structure necessary to build the shape.

Also, I'm working on getting spike-big-small-spike.  It's pretty tough.  I've gotten to the point where I can spike from start about 80% of the time, which is really satisfying, though.  ^.^  It's the last spike that kills me.

I did practice end cup briefly before this, and I've improved immensely at that one.  Took a break to practice spiking.  :P

Nice! consistency is key. I'm currently practicing cup to spike and consistency in transferring from cup to cup. I'm getting really good at going to the chuzara now in the sara grip. I haven't practiced much in the ken grip though. Here is a picture of proper definitions of each part of the kendama. Kendama skype sesh's Soontm

All that kendama terminology... This was really fun to play with at KeyCon, but I think if I had one of my own, I'd find myself "wasting" more time on it than I'd like to admit.

LMAO, Is this the start of a new trend.

does the paint/ finish get worn out over time?

Depending on the quality of the kendama, it depends. Some of the paint has been wearing off where the hole of the tama is but other than that, just marks and indentations from my fail attempts.

Nice! Love the stripes.
Also if you practice spiking and the spike starts dulling, I suggest you put a couple coats of super glue on the tip to make it more sturdy.

I saw the thing a little and went to the conclusion that it's some kind of modern bilboquet. But what's the idea behind it? How do you determine a winner?

Similar, yes.  And a winner is determined as follows: one person sets the "trick", and the others have three chances to copy it.  If they fail, they receive a letter.  (much like 'horse').  The person who sets the trick then rotates, and this continues until you're down to two people left, at which point you have to do it twice I believe (I'm sure dorkvader or Lingj can explain better).

There may be other competitive things too.  I just started doing this two days ago, so I'm far from the expert.  I'm just all aboard the hype train.

Can't believe I just now found this topic!

Just to be clear: that's just the "street kendama" rules, my room-mates and I made up for our first competition (over the last remaining pancake, which after 45 minutes of furious Kendama-ing, was rather cold. It tasted like victory.)

I rock an extremely heavily used ozora kendama in natural woodgrain. I'm currently saving up for another one though.

does the paint/ finish get worn out over time?

Depending on the quality of the kendama, it depends. Some of the paint has been wearing off where the hole of the tama is but other than that, just marks and indentations from my fail attempts.
It also depends on your technique. Mine is all beat up partially because my roommates and I weren't catching it softly enough.

Where is dorkvader aka kendama king aaka #1 during all this development??!

You gotta PM me! I can't read all of GH. sadly, I suspect hoffmanmyster and lingj have already surpassed me

how is the ozora compared to the tribute or classic? I'm not even gonna consider KROM until I feel like I know what I'm doing. I want the Ozora Horse haha

I believe dorkvader has an Ozora which was his natural color one. I think his string was super long but it felt just as light as the Krom.

Yep, ozora woodgrain. The string is competition length, as the kendama is JKA certified.

where do you look up all these new kendama skills?

I'm getting better (slowly since I don't practise that much) at the tama-holding skills. I've done the lighthose a few times, and I'm getting really consistent at that reverse-thing where I swing the ken up and spike it into the tama. I just need to combine the two.

http://sweetskendamas.com/tipstricks/ has a lot to choose from. Earthturn is super satisfying to land. I plan on doing more tama tricks when I get a tama that has tacky paint. My Krom is still pretty smooth.

'cause ozora wins tournaments.

'specially woodgrain (unpainted) ones.

I landed exactly one lunar yesterday. They're tough! I also did a lighthouse, then the flip to spike. Trying to hop it to pen grip and swing-in after that's but it's been hard.

Also need to tain my family to hold the camera steady :p

Good to know the balance of Krom isn't too off. I look at them and have to wonder.

Limited runs of the kendama is what makes them expensive. Also: being JKA approved, they play very well, and have unique colors add to that. Some more information

I'll try! I just don't think my tricks are good enough to post right now. If you're interested in a getting a kendama, I would recommend to start with either a KendamaUSA Tribute model, or an ozora. Personally I would start with an ozora because they last quite a while, and there's a reason why it's approved for Japanese tournaments cause it's good!

Keep at it! Just try popping it up as straight as you can. I kinda flick it up instead of a long pull. Dont spike it and just see how straight you pulled it up.

Improved a lot today. Figured out how to do earthturn consistently and cup to spike transfers solid. All about the knees.

I'm sure I can get my spike consistent with a little practise. Even at keycon I was starting to get it.

how do you get it form the cup to the spike? for me it's usually on the cup at a wrong angle or whatever. Not sure what to do next.

At that point it's mostly just practicing how to control the tama. Like if the hole is facing you, you pop the tama away from you and the hole goes down. You need to compensate if the angle is not right. Mainly muscle memory or once you get good at controlling the tama you can just put the hole facing you all the time. I try not to spike the tama at an angle, always trying to control the tama so the hole is facing down so all I need to do is face the spike upright and it creates less room for error.

Since we're sharing! And I'm not gonna play on this one until I've mastered everything. It's too pretty : ' ]
Such a pretty kendama, I understand why you don't want to beat it up.
Just learn how to do things lightly and it won't get beat up.

I measured the weights of my two kendamas.

Oozora woodgrain:
Ken weight: 70g
Tama weight: 60g
total: 130g

KO kendama fishbone
Ken weight: 70g
Tama weight: 75g
total: 145g

The fishbone tama, despite being quite heavy, is pretty easy to handle. I spiked it first try with no issue.

Now I have to learn all over again how to use a kendama with paint on it. I considered getting the fishskin version, but that would probably be too much of a jump!

I check the weight of some of my kendamas:

Peach
Tama: 81.5 grams
Ken: 74 grams

Blue Prism
Tama: 74 grams
Ken: 76 grams

Ozora Natural
Tama: 65 grams
Ken: 74 grams

Sweets Focus
Tama: 79 grams
Ken: 74 grams

KendamaUSA Pro Model
Tama: 84 grams
Ken: 81 grams

I was expecting the Mugens to be near perfect balance but the peach is off by a lot. I switched out the kens from both so now the prism has the same weight for both ken and tama.
Also I am currently experimenting with my Ozora by adding an oil finish to the wood to make it look darker. I'm trying to get something similar to what these guys do.

Indeed, although it has a niche community similar to geekhack there is a lot of brands of kendama each having  a different feel from one another.

New clip is up  ;D

I just spiked my oozora 10 times in a row!

I've taken to spiking it more than my new one to try and avoid getting little circular divots in the tama.

Still don't know what I"m doing right though.

I'm going to start back up today. I just had that revelation that I always get when I'm busy doing one thing for an extended period of time. That "oh my god I forgot I had so many interests" feeling.

Super motivated right now. I need to learn how to moderate doing all the cool things I'm into instead of cutting things out completely, I guess. I swear this feels like a life lesson right now I need to tweet it or sign up for a blog and write it out

just introduced it to my friend from seattle. She's usually really clumsy but picked up kendama like super quick! She's only been at it a little while and already has all the cup transfers pretty well down. I linked her some where to buy.

She says it's really addicting.

I've got the airplane down and am worknig on flipping the ken 360 and catching it in the tama. How is that even a beginner skill ? oh well I'll get it.

Recently I have learned spacewalk, juggling, bird over valley, airplane, jumping stick, lighthouse in, 1turn gunslinger earthturn, inverted pull in, and tradespike.
Currently learning handroll and getting more consistent with tama tricks.
I am having a lot of trouble getting downspike.

try spinning the tama :p

on my recently acquired fishbone, I found out the hole isn't drilled straight making it a lot harder to spike. I basically only use it for cup transfers and tama-grip tricks. I forget what it's called, but I did the one where you hold the tama, and spike the ken into it and then flip the ken backwards and catch it upright on the tama. I don't know if I can do it again so easily though.

I would also feel bad about selling it, 'cause whoever gets it would have to put up with an inferior kendama. The search for a decent one continues, as my beat up oozora will not last forever.

Maybe I'll just get this one on my next paycheque

I don't own a fishbone but if you take a look, Ozoras have an off center hole. That's because it makes it easier to do spinning tricks. If you're looking for a solid dama, I'd recommend a
Premium Ozora,  KendamaCo Zen Girrs, or Homegrown Sweets.

Also the trick you mentioned is Airplane to Jumping Stick.

Roots also makes really nice custom Ozoras

I'm trying to see how much interest there will be locally. I'm selling the kendamas at a Japanese Festival at my parents booth that sells Oriental Plants. I'll be starting a meetup every Friday for like two hours to see if there could be a potential scene in Florida. I feel like if the other states can have a kendama scene then why can't it be at Florida too. The only thing I have against me is that I'm still not that good and can't show kendamas full potential. I can still impress people but will people be like "man I want to do that too."

Title: Re: GeekHack Kendama Team

Here's my reflection from the festival:
I had a little section to myself to show people what kendama was next to my family businesses' booth. The festival was local and most families are upper-middle class.

1. Many of the people that passed by showed some interest it, most people tried it out and found it pretty difficult to do. Out of those people, some people asked me how much they were. The kendamas I had were mostly $18-$22 with some at twenty-six and thirty dollars.

2. I think it's very difficult to sell kendamas at this price point because many people don't think a piece of wood is that much money and it's something they may or may not be committed to. But Yomega Kendamas are sold at Target here for about $16. Michaels and Toysrus have it but not sure about the price.

3. As much as I don't like doing this, a better approach to starting interest here would be to sell cheaper quality kendamas that are around ten dollars. When there is more interest, a higher price point with higher quality kendamas is more feasible.

4. Having two people demoing it is better than one person. Less intimidating to try it.

5. I've only been playing for four months but I can do tricks that impress people so that's not really the problem. When people see me playing they probably have a mentality that this is something they will never be able to do.

6. I had fliers for starting a club at my nearby park but there wasn't much interest.

7. I was only able to sell one natty kendama and two kids from a Judo dojo had kendamas. Only a couple people knew about them but never owned one or owned them when they were younger

Not really what I was expecting but I will keep trying. There may be more potential at my university. Here's a picture of my friend and I with those kids.

I really need to up my game to more "thinking" type work and less "doing" type work.

it is such a waste to have a brain, yet only do work that a robot could do.

my trouble is that no-one wants to believe you can think without serious proof (fancy paper, etc.) whereas mostly they don't care how good you are at "doing". The top 5% computer repair techs in the USA make the same money as the bottom 5%. (anyone below that probably gets fired for being so horrible).

the thought is that doing things like kendama can help you think. I agree that games of skill and maybe a little physical activity are excellent for thinking and creativity.

I could give you some tips on them. Recently I've been meeting up twice a week with a couple people at my uni to play kendama which has been a lot of fun. Playing with people definitely makes you learn faster.

I'm still just trying to master getting the tama on the spike from other cups. I can consistently get it from just hanging and I can airplane, but I have a ton of trouble getting it from elsewhere.

Hellooo, How are you guys doing?  :)

Every time I go on Instagram I'm reminded of how much you've progressed since last summer.   :-[   I hope to someday be that comfortable with kendama.

I'm playing intermittently when I have a chance, maybe 2-3 times a week in short spurts.  :P  Slowly getting better, but I've got a long way to go!

Also, we need to get billnye in here; I got him a kendama for xmas but haven't seen him use it...    :-* :-* :-*

Here (http://shop.kendamausa.com/collections/classic/kendama-usa) are the most basic (but still good quality) ones you will find.

So um... hey guys!

I used to kendama (it's played in Taiwan as well and my cousins brought one over to the States for me when I was in 5th grade or something. I've played around with it until I lost it somewhere overseas - probably while backpacking through Thailand during college).

Anyway, I'm not sure if this is the right thread but... I recently have become intrigued by something somewhat similar to the kendama (at least I think it's somewhat similar):

Does anyone asalato?
(also called Aslatua and Patica)

Glad it arrived. I forgot if I packed it but was there a pamphlet with instructions and stickers inside that package? I think I might have forgot to put it inside.. Also the Kendama was stringed lefty, if you're right-handed you can restring it.

You packed it, also I didn't realize that there was a difference. I'll restring it and see if it gets easier.  :thumb:
