Even over 10 years after its release, more people use Internet Explorer 6 than Apple computers. The fastest browser that can render modern web pages is still alive and well!

I'd say that Internet Explorer 6 has to be one of the best and most successful web browsers ever.

When I started my job 3 years ago, we were still using XP and IE6. They have since "upgraded" to Vista and IE7. It's nice to have tabs, but javascript is still crap on IE7.

Mostly because of businesses. Same reason XP still has massive market share. Almost every large institution I've been to still uses XP.

I'm used to open explorer just to run windows update, if I'm running xp or older windows.

Other than that there isn't a single reason to use it for a single user.

Unluckily the corporate environment is a different matter.

I read somewhere that on a daily basis, for every Google search, there are 200 million COBOL transactions.

Businesses have a bad habit of perpetuating silly things like this.

I really wish that my company hadn't written certain web-based applications specifically for IE6, as many web sites - including some of our vendors - are now completely broken for IE6.

Or at least if they'd let me install Firefox in parallel w/ IE6 so I could actually get useful work done without having to use my personal machine to look stuff up after hours.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.
Filco Majestouch-2 with Cherry Corp. doubleshot keys - Leopold Tenkeyless Tactile Force with Wyse doubleshots - Silicon Graphics 9500900 - WASD V1 - IBM Model M 52G9658 - Noppoo Choc Pro with Cherry lasered PBT keycaps - Wyse 900866-01 - Cherry G80-8200LPBUS/07 - Dell AT101W - several Cherry G81s (future doubleshot donors) (order of current preference) (dang I have too many keyboards, I really only need two)

IE, you mean the internet browser from IE4-6 that has shell integration with Windows Explorer and becomes unstable, if it is removed?

Eww

"Internet Explorer removal has changed over its version history, but the nature of many of its upgrades and installation methods have been a matter of public interest. The first version to be included was version 2 with Windows 95 in late 1996. Later, users who upgraded to IE3 (which came out in 1996), could still use the last IE, because the installation converted the previous version to separate directory.

However, Internet Explorer 4 created a controversy with its shell integration with Windows Explorer, and with later versions removal (or inability to do so) became more complicated. The idea of removing Internet Explorer from a Microsoft Windows operating system was proposed during the United States v. Microsoft case. Later, some security advocates took up the idea as a way to protect Windows systems from attack via IE vulnerabilities. By the release of Internet Explorer 7, some of the shell integration began being reduced, such as changing ActiveX hosting and a different look than Windows Explorer.

As of build 7048 of Windows 7, Microsoft added the ability to safely remove Internet Explorer from Windows.[2] Dependencies such as the Trident layout engine are not removed through this process, but the Internet Explorer executable (iexplore.exe) is removed without harming any other Windows components, thus preventing Internet Explorer itself from running. It was proposed that a special version of Windows 7, Windows 7 E, would be shipped without Internet Explorer in Europe as a result of EU antitrust investigations against Microsoft.[3][4][5][6][7] However, in July 2009, Microsoft cancelled the Windows 7 E editions due to negative reactions from computer manufacturers."

Is it possible to downgrade IE 8.0.6001.18702 with IE6 under XP and go back to IE8?  If so, i'll gladly check it out, it's been a while.  The reason why I ask is because this isn't my computer.

I'm most familiar with IE5.... those were the days. Loading up a dial-up connection on IE5 in the late 90's up until 2003. Then something horrible happened which made me temporarily "upgrade". But that's been resolved.

What's with websites only working with IE?  Never understood that, anyone?

Could it have anything to do with M$ shell integration into windows explorer?  Is M$ slowly becoming the ultimate monopoly alliance of all time?

"An alliance is an agreement or friendship between two or more parties, made in order to advance common goals and to secure common interests."

"The verb "monopolise" refers to the process by which a company gains much greater market share than what is expected with perfect competition."

Meanwhile, Steve Jobs with ridiculous amounts of money is being treated for his cancer with Chemical  -  Therapy drugs at "the same Clinic where Hollywood Actor the Late Patrick Swayze was undergoing chemotherapy," as the media puts a positive spin on marketing Chemical  -  Therapy.  Steve Jobs is having foreign mad-made chemicals pumped directly into his bloodstream instead of using the cancer curing properties of high concentrations from Cannabis oil extracts.  Cannabis is illegal so it MUST be bad.  :Drinks some beer of man-made ethyl alcohol:

Have people stopped questioning reality?  Seriously, the only viable competition must live on strong or else M$ will likely become one of the biggest monopolies of all time.  I wonder if Bill Gates got cancer, would he use Chemical  -  Therapy.

For me, the great releases were:

Windows 95, 98, XP, and 7

One day in the next year, when I have the time and money, I will probably go to 8

I have installations (some unwrapped) for most Windows between 3.11 and XP lying around at home.  Includes some of the server variants (NT Server and 2000 Server).  Even NT TSE somewhere!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
