Cross post, but I don't care.  My Kishsaver travels with me when I do for work.  I think it weighs more than my laptop.

Thanks to a friend of mine who scored this among some other boards at a recycling centre, I have my first buckling spring board I've ever owned.  It's incredibly filthy and is missing a key, but I hope to clean it up really good and maybe even do some customizing to it down the road.  Maybe a new keycap set at the very least.  I've never touched buckling springs before today, and I think I'm having a life changing experience right now.  The board I have was built on July 21 1989 based on the date.

I would say you are 100% correct in that.  This laptop is one of the first ones that shipped with Windows 8, not 8.1 and was low specced even for that time.  But, it was inherited, serves a good purpose as a travel laptop, I don't use a computer for work.  And lets me use Linux on a machine I don't care if it crashes.

It's definitely possible. You could buy a new Unicomp M with windows keys, the cut the back and barrel plates to size, then cut the little squares off the SSK case and put it the assembly in...
Nope, dreaming about the MF kit... I will be cutting the ssk case to fit a 86 layout. I cant wait.

Finally installed a beige USB cable into my xwhatsit Kishsaver. I could never find a USB-A to Micro-USB in a shade I liked, so I bought an OTG cable and a USB-A to USB-A off Amazon.

new family shot:

bought the 5576-003 japanese ssk recently from ramnes (thanks man!). really really love the Brother Buckling Spring on it. the feel is right between an M and F - significantly crisper than the M but not as loud as the F. it also has individual BS switches unlike the M which I guess should make repairs easier except I dunno how I'd ever find replacement switches:

found a 1391401 with a badly scratched/dinged up case and put the guts inside a NOS industrial gray case from unicomp. also sourced the gray logo and LED overlay.

black logo would be nice, but digging this a lot more than the blue.

I wanted to show off another of my little projects featuring some neat colored function keys which I robbed from a vanilla Model M that I bought just for these keys. I started with a new old stock industrial case that I got for cheap on eBay a while back. Unicomp still sells these cases. Next I was able to acquire the black badge from a previous group buy. The guts come from a donor Model M. I will still need to do some cleaning and a bolt mod to make this complete.
