What do you listen to while you code?
« on: Mon, 18 January 2016, 11:51:30 »
I know lots of people here are coders, so what music do you listen to while you code, if any?  Feel free to share any artists, playlists, songs, etc.  Hopefully we can all get some new ideas!
My tastes change, but at the moment I'm into the "Code your Face Off" playlist on Songza.

Here's a list of peoples' preferences so far:

open spotify
search programming
press play
done
continue with logic

to be honest this is like asking what do you like to listen to
there is no correlation between music and programming. some people like to listen to heavy metal and some like something soothing and less distracting.
but yeah just weed the stuff you don't like from a programming playlist on spotify. There are people constantly adding music to programming playlists so its always updated

I listen to chill stuff.

something that gets me relaxed and in the zone.

If something is to upbeat and noisy, I lose focus.

Something like this

Nice playlist!  I know what you mean, I find that I go back and forth since I need something more mellow for deep concentration. You might like this songza playlist as well: http://songza.com/listen/idm-for-studying-songza/

I listen to what I normally listen to. I'm weird in this regard, most of my co-workers have specific stuff they put on to get into the zone, but I strongly prefer my normal stuff, I find it keeps me energized.

If I could describe this in one word, it would be havoc.  Very interesting take on white noise, but too rough for me to listen to for long periods of time.
Those laser-eyes though.

I can't  YouTube at work, but on normal rotation are:

The Lawrence Arms (I'm partial to Metropole and Oh! Calcutta!)
The Alkaline Trio (almost anything, except for the ****ty stuff)
The Falcon (for when I'm mad, and/or really feeling the flow)
Matt Pryor (mellow)
The Loved Ones
Osker
No Use for a Name
Bad Religion

I have more regulars, but those usually dominate the set. I've heard it all so often that it can blend into the background. I listen to music at work as much as I can, it is the only thing that keeps me sane most days. Any day spent with my headphones on for the majority of it, is a good day.

Something like Pandora works too, and provides some good variety but it takes up so much data and I can't access it from my companies network. Streaming is not my friend in the workplace.

I listen to my keyboard.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I listen to video game soundtracks. Usually from some metroid or zelda game but it varies.

I heard somewhere that video game soundtracks are perfect for coding because they're designed to keep you focused on your current task and not be distracting, and so far I've found that to be true

Just silence, or noise (rain or Topre recordings), or if it's music, it should be instrumental and not overly complex. My recent favorites are
  • My Sleeping Karma (stoner rock)
  • Drudkh (atmospheric black metal)
  • Dust: An Elysian Tail OST

Either something really chill like tycho, russian circles, beach house ....
or something really loud with a lot of yelling. Weirdly enough I'm more productive with loud metal rather than chill music.

My top Pandora stations:

Animals as Leaders (instrumental prog metal), for C/C++
Faux Tales (chill dubstep), for anything with a REPL

Sometimes Meshuggah but not on Pandora because they mix it up too much with other bands with too-intelligible vocals.  Basically I require either relaxing music or pure chaos.

A bit weird perhaps, but depends on what I have to code.

Usually, mix of minimal techno, drum and bass, and trance (old-school trance). That stuff really gets me in the zone and lets me forget the time for at least a couple of hours. Especially minimal techno mixes.. they are like.. they continue and go on and on and I don't really sense switches between tracks, so it feels like my coding is also continuous.

When I'm doing research (looking for libraries, reading API, etc.), I usually like to listen to something more melodic, like jazz or classical. Dunno why really.

And occasionally some retro music for dem feelz and nostalgia... Charlots of Fire anyone?

When I'm at work I usually listen to the Trapaholics playlist on Spotify, unless I'm not using headphones. At home, I generally play something a little more chill. Today I've been listening to the "Gryffin presents Heading Home" playlist.

Ludovico Einaudi. His stuff is absolutely terrific, and not distracting.

Been experimenting with pink and white noise lately, it's surprisingly not too bad at low volumes.

Mmm, mostly Spotify but lately went back to SoundCloud and seldom some old Youtube playlists. Mostly IDM, nice beats, Ambient, Drone or some experimental stuff. Really dig the Spotify "Discover Weekly" playlist which "feeds" me cool new music and I've become lazy with new findings.

Some of my latest favorite songs/albums for setting a "mood" while programming are:
  • Charles Bardley - Strictly Reserved for You
  • Nils Frahm - Them
  • Hudson Mohawke - Forever 1 (Cashmere Cat Remix)
  • Benoit Pioulard - Florid (Brambles Mix)
  • William Basinski - Cascade
  • Jim Guthrie & Solid Mas - One of These Days I'll Get It Right

Those last two are albums and they're amazing by the way.

I've been craving faster and faster music lately. Maybe because my current project is going very slowly and I'm feeling under stimulated

Currently, I listen to music that is as abstract as my code, like for instance ambient trance / ambient techo / space ambient / deep space ambient.

It puts me in a mode, in a sweet spot. I don't know. Like I'm not in this planet while I'm coding.

I too enjoy that kind of mix of music/work.

Generally, I enjoy listening to electronic music of some sort or videogame music while working (coding or otherwise).

Yes.

They are.

And filtering it.

And deciding what sites are "appropriate" for us to view.

As I poke source code with a stick my music consists mostly of trendy instrumental bands. Or maybe instrumentals from trendy bands. Depends on my mood

It really depends on my mood. If I'm in the serious 'tech OG H4Ck3R' mood. I'll listen to a lot of older edm or trance. Recently my heart is with Boys Noize and Hudson Mohawke (yes I did find him thanks to Watch Dogs... I'm not going to try and play the hipster role).

If I'm calm and doing some casual work -- sys admin, *nix ricing, tinkering with personal projects -- I go for old Japanese jazz club... Ryo Fukui to be specific.
