Title: What is your favourite board ATM?
Post by: jcoffin1981 on Sun, 10 June 2018, 05:12:02
I say "at the moment," because mine changes all the time.  I've been trying to increase my typing speed which I've increased from about 60 to 71 wpm.  I haven't bought a new board in about 2 years and there are so many new switches and boards that I am unfamiliar with. I'd like to know as I'm in the market for something new, and non-Cherry

_I will say with the disclaimer that of the boards I own, my fave changes frequently, so I'll list my current. I swap my board once a week and the novelty keeps things fresh.

1. Favorite board?
2. Paired with favorite switch?
3. A brief explanation

I'll go first

1. Pok3R
2. Lubed Cherry MX Brown
3. I like the small footprint, programability, and the lubed switches. Some say it is pointless to lube these as they have rather low tactility already, but I'm finding I'm liking less of a bump. Unfortunately I don't remember the lubricant I used.  When I get around to doing so I should really try a light linear switch, probably in a board that allows hot-swapping.  Also, the keycaps on these really are top notch.  Many swap them but I see no point, though I see lots of pretty keycaps.

Currently liking my CP-SQ (1800ish) with first round Zealio housings and linear Gateron clear stems lightly lubed with Krytox thin.  Heavy springs to avoid bottoming out (120g springs in the middle section, 100g towards the edges) and Hyperfuse GMK caps.

This board has every key I need where I want it (see 'more' for layout) while still allowing the mouse to be closer than a fullsize, and being acrylic it has a distinct dull satisfying thud when I do bottom out.

1. Filco MJ2

2. Hand wired Jailhouse blues, 60gram springs (at actuation), o-rings, thick pbt caps

3. I really like the VA68/Magicforce 68 layout (wish it had fkeys), however the Magicforce is cheap (though good for what it is), the Va68 is nice (have not tried one) but lacks a few things and is certainly not cheap. I've been giving serious though to getting the Va68 and installing an aftermarket pcb with programmability, but if I'm going to spend that much, I would almost prefer to just design and build my own keyboard from the ground up. I've bought 4 keyboards since the MJ (Model M, Magicforce 68, GH60 and a full Chinese custom) and none have been able to replace it so I'm hesitant to buy yet another that will just sit around.

1. Topre RF 87U 45g uni
2. 45g uni
3. It is just pure sex to type on it. Every key stroke is so comfortable, precise and repeatable. In compare my Hyper-x alloy FPS TKL with cheery red feels quite flimsy and random in key presses. Great for gaming tough!

1. Gray Revo RJ and GB PCB, Brass Plate, thin lubed Zealio's.

2. HHKB Pro 2, lubed Realforce silent sliders, 55g RF domes.

1. Topre Realforce RGB
2. Silenced TMX

3. This is the only full-size keyboard with Topre switches that can take all my MX-based keycap sets, so it wins by default. I've had to perform two customizations myself: adding silencing rings and painting the case white. Example:

At the moment I have three boards, and they're all so different from each other that I tend to bounce back and forth on which is my favorite. I'd have to say that purely based on feel, my HHKB is probably my favorite.

same here: hhkb. but i dislike the cylindrical keycaps because i type with my wrists straight. a split keyboard would solve that problem, but it's a no-win situation because i also like to be able to reach any key with my left hand only (for when i'm using the mouse heavily)

Model M SSK but I also really like the keytouch and sound of my alps64 with matias click and aekii keycaps.

Favourite switch is buckling spring but I can't decide if I prefer model F or M.

Fantastic bottoming outs and great sound and heavy keycaps.

1) Current favorite board is my Tina-A with a brass plate, DZ60 USB-C PCB, and GMK Muted keycaps.

2) Current favorite: Tie between Hako True and Silent MX Reds in Zealios housing with lube. From what I've felt though, Halo Trues will likely overtake these as my favorite. I like pink switches.

3)  HHKB is my favorite layout because it is compact, aesthetically pleasing to me, and easy to reach all necessary functions. The Hako is a nice switch, but now that I have some Halo Trues, in hand, I really wish I was able to use them on this build because they definitely feel more tactile and consistent. In the future, I'll either be updating this to True Royals (Hako true stem and spring in Box Royal housing, makes it very tactile), or Halo Trues in Zealios housing and 67g spring for increased tactility until Panda R2 happens.

I read the forums and there are so many switches that I have never heard of, including box and a half-bajillion others.  My next board may be a hot swap board so I can try all these new ones and not be committed.  I have not even tried Alps or Matias yet.  I am behind the times.  However, I am very happy with my current daily driver, the lubed Pok3r.

My current favorite is a Realforce RGB.  I love the way it types almost as much as the Type Heaven I have at work, but I have Mac specific keycaps on the RGB, so that puts it over the top.
