No one can tell you what Kendama is...

Show Image

ACtualllly... the mechanics of these obsessions are always the same..

it's known as Escapism through extreme focus.

When you watch a movie, practice typing, practice sports..  drink alcohol

The motivations are the same.. to escape the tedium of daily life, and the constant signs that life and living is repetitive.

Through utilizing extreme focus.... look at how the player described it in the video.. "the time when the ball is in the air, and you make the hook,  it's like nothing else matters, time slows down, and when the ball catches, you're back to reality". -paraphrase

This is essentially the mildest form of drug addiction / dependence..  Only it's less likely to spiral out of control, because well "it's mild"...

So if we look at the pathway more simply..   it starts as a "state of urgency", you force yourself into a state of alert, "it's imperative" that you get the ball on the stick...  this takes you into the NOW, and away from all other thoughts, (some of which) may be more important/pressing..

Then, when the ball clicks,  it's a moment of elation, a reward system that you give yourself, a shot of serotonin.. a RELIEF...

So. in summary.. what is kendama, an escape,  how does it reward,  by causing you short term stress, then instant elation.

SAME mechanic as video games sans computer and (Trichotillomania), hahaha

I'm not here to argue whether the Kendama practice may be beneficial or useless or fun or anything else..

but you can not deny that there is a concrete answer to WHY do it.....
Show Image

WHY DO WE EXIST TP? WHY?

I'm glad you've asked.. I've made some movements on this.

We exist as a chain of events from the beginning..

The only reason we can ask the question " WHY ", is because we lack comprehensive understanding of the universe.

To better illustrate this point...  probability is actually an illusion.. everything that has happened and will happen  is of absolute certainty..  but as we are not ourselves the complete system, we can only GUESS (probability) at what may happen, that is a limitation of our consciousness / brain/ physiology/ size, but NOT of reality.

Reality is complete, its rules are explained wholly and completely to itself, it does not digress..

Human thought-digresses, at least our perception of human-thought through human-thought does, because it is an incomplete reality where the concept of digressing is possible.

That is to say.. there is a solution. From OUR perspective that solution is "Everything else + YOU (the observer)"

However, while you can BE part of the solution, you will never perceive it until either total collapse of the universe, or heat-death...

When either conditions are met, we have on one hand singularity, and the other, nothingness..

Those are the two pivotal points where both the Rules of the universe and the universe itself are meaningless because all is explained..

That's a very interesting perspective! I am a fan of that school of thought. I see more merit in the long-term aspect of these types of hobbies. I like seeing progress and knowing that I've become better at some thing. It's even cooler when there are people around to encourage and acknowledge each other's skills/growth.

Yes.. human beings are designed to become addicted to "progress bars."

Like I said, motivational mechanisms are behind nearly everything you do.

Why are Mobas and Fpses so addictive, because they give you stress, and reward, and at a much faster rate than Real LIFE, where everything operates more slowly.

You mentioned social aspects..  this is a throwback to an evolutionary strategy for cooperation.. It also increases the odds that you will find a mate.. which is why people have the propensity to seek social engagements in the first place..

So when you combine all of these elements of motivation, your brain perceives it as "quickly" carrying out the motions of human life, although in truth, you're not really doing that..

BUT.. today... because we have so much excess capacity in supplying food/water,  it's not imperative that EVERYONE go be a farmer.. THUS... we have channeled the excess human capacity into exploring other things.. such as games.. and thoughts..

you can't replicate goku with asian straight hair..  straight Hair does not have that kind of mass..

In truth, only black people can replicate goku's hair.. because only their hair has the 3D structure necessary to build the shape.

Doo iiiit.  :D

Also, I'm working on getting spike-big-small-spike.  It's pretty tough.  I've gotten to the point where I can spike from start about 80% of the time, which is really satisfying, though.  ^.^  It's the last spike that kills me.

I did practice end cup briefly before this, and I've improved immensely at that one.  Took a break to practice spiking.  :P

What's everyone else working on??

Nice! consistency is key. I'm currently practicing cup to spike and consistency in transferring from cup to cup. I'm getting really good at going to the chuzara now in the sara grip. I haven't practiced much in the ken grip though. Here is a picture of proper definitions of each part of the kendama. Kendama skype sesh's Soontm

All that kendama terminology... This was really fun to play with at KeyCon, but I think if I had one of my own, I'd find myself "wasting" more time on it than I'd like to admit.

Also, they have these things:

Depending on the quality of the kendama, it depends. Some of the paint has been wearing off where the hole of the tama is but other than that, just marks and indentations from my fail attempts.

On another note, does anyone know of a nice free video editor?  Basically just want to cut a video to be a specific time frame without getting viruses and confusing the hell out of myself.

Avidemux

it works.. but the actual muxing feature isn't so great, i end up with lots of unplayable files..

you can save your work separately , and mux it using mkvtoolnix, assuming your're all lined up

but.. i mean.. y arn't you using.. Arrge matey brand software??

LOL, I just spent longer figuring out how to make a .gif than I did working on that trick.  And the .gif is 55 MB, while the original video is 2 MB.  That was a huge waste of time.

I'm just uploading the video to my dropbox.  You can download it if you'd like.

Here it is.  This is that trick from yesterday that I finally got.  Not tooo terribly difficult, but it was really satisfying to get it again.   :thumb:
