Title: [IC] THE50 - R2

Hey, guys. After R1 spots sale, there are some friends are still interested in getting a THE50. And I got some feedback from R1 users and I think I could do some improvements. So I decide to make another round of THE50.

1) I add a compatible layout which long spacebar is available on THE50 now.

2) I will make southpaw version this round, here are two render pics.

3) And enlightened by my friend who doesn't show up on GH I think, I will make HHKB version this round. Personally I couldn't use it, that's why I'm working on Dimple. But I think some of you guys may like it.

4) Due to the vendor issue, R1 got a barely OK solution of dual bottoms. I'm working on the redesign of THE50's bottom. And I have to apologize to one R1 user, I can't remember who, but I said to him I won't change the design of the plate and bottom if I open another round. I'm so sorry but I really have to.

5) R1's quality is not good, that's why I sell them for 120USD. But I really appreciate the R1 users didn't blame me for this. The R2 will have good quality this time. Here is a picture of THE60 I recently made. R2 will have this gray blue and purple color beside Black\Gray\Silver.

The Round 2 kit will include:
1) Aluminum upcase
2) Brass plate
3) Aluminum Bottom (to be confirmed)
4) Brass nameplate or weight (to be confirmed)
5) PCB

Time schedule: I will try my best to have them done before May. When done, FCFS. No reservation.
Price: Haven't finished the redesign and got quote from vendors yet but I think it definitely won't be more than 180USD excluding shipment and Paypal fee.
Quantity: I will make total 100 kits. The detailed quantities of different colors are to be decided.

If you guys have any questions, feel free to comment and forgive me if I can't reply in time.

Special thanks to @TunnaTown who made THE50 a firmware in QMK configurator. The original is based on kbfirmware.

The layout on R1 was fixed, so likely R2 will be too.

Although now seeing you're gonna make a southpaw version & make it possible to use a long space bar, missing R1 may have been a blessing in disguise. I am definitely interested in a southpaw in the grey/blue color! Also as others have asked what is the status of the THE60s? Has the GB already come & gone for them? If not will there be a GB for them? As much as I like the THE50, the THE60 ticks some extra boxes with preferences & I would be very interested in one of them as well!

I'm a middle school teacher that probably shouldn't even be in this hobby seeing how expensive it is. I have been selling off everything until I am now down to one 40% ortho board with budget components. The first run being at around $120 would be the top of my small budget, but gave me hope for future runs. I am worried that anything approaching $180 will be more than I can afford. Would there be options such as a plateless/aluminum plate selection, or other ways of trimming the cost? I love this layout so much, especially now that there is a HHKB variant.

I fully understand why it's more expensive, I just wish there had been some way of being part of the first short run.

Probably my best bet is to see if anyone with a R1 board is thinking of replacing it with a R2 board, and seeing if I can buy their R1 edition off them? (I know it would not be HHKB layout, that's fine.)

I always think the customized keyboards should not be expensive, that's why I'm making budget kit. I always balance the design and the cost.
Due to my purpose of designing THE50, I will keep it this way. I'm sure I will make some more designs with lower cost and more affordable.
And I suggest you see more options such as sandwich case or acrylic case. I know a lot of guys made amazing 40% kits with these materials and if I am in US, I will definitely try these.

But sure, CAD files for the R1 plate (and bottom plate?) would be nice to have.

THE60 is a tray mounted case, just some other 60 universal cases you can use DZ60 on it.
THE50 R2 will be on sale first. I have to do a prototype of Dimple meanwhile.

It's standard gap of switches. I think it's light reflection of the stainless steel plate that makes it look wider than normal.

基于中文输入法比其他语言输入法更加需要数字列的特性，
<60%的小配列在中文界不受欢迎还是非常可以理解的吧。
当然我是已经习惯40/45%大小的键盘的:)

加油来更多套件呀～

In my opinion,
num row is much more frequently used in chinese input method than in other language,
therefore low popularity for any layout than smaller than 60% is understandable in chinese community.
but of course I prefer 40/45% layout:)

Yeah, both. HHKB version will also have southpaw version. 10 for each.

Even with QMK and tapdancing, other 40% boards have me having to memorize too many key combos, especially with things like passwords; and 60% boards have me readjusting my hand placement almost as much as a TKL, without the intuitiveness.
THE50 falls right in the sweet spot.

Preparing Dimple and THE30 for the next month. The PCBs of THE50R2 are almost ready. But the manufacturer will begin to process the 50R2's case next month after THE30.

Updating my recent progress:
Shipping out Dimples. But some of Dimple's PCBs haven't been finished due to some issues.
And I changed my manufacturer after Dimple. I am currently testing my manufacturer with THE30. THE30 will be done soon.
After that I will place THE50R2's orders. I am thinking of dropping the design of brass weight, using integrated aluminum bottom and weight. And I will lower the estimated price from 180USD to 150-160USD due to the change of design.
