[IC] SNACKS! Kit Kats, M&Ms, etc. (CONUS)
« on: Thu, 07 August 2014, 09:24:52 »
Goal
It has come to my attention that we are in dire need of a snack GB.  I'd like to coordinate something to get delicious snacks into the US.  Post your interest here with what snack you might want, how many, and I'll keep a running tally in the OP.

Availability will depend on potential sources and total quantity desired.  If only one person wants something from a unique source, it doesn't make sense to add it here, as they can simply buy it themselves for the same cost.  Make sense?  So we may need to omit some snacks (  :'(  I'm sorry  ) for the sake of feasability.  But that's where the IC comes in!  :)

Shipping notes
Okay, so some logistics.  I'm going to base my shipping choices on the scale of this whole thing.  I already have a bunch of flat rate boxes, and they're free, so that's a really easy option.  If enough people desire, I can buy some regular boxes to save a few bucks.  Either way is fine with me, so long as I can get ahold of the boxes.  I have a stamps.com account, so the shipping rates should be quite reasonable.   :thumb:

On to the snacks!
Organized by type, flavour (when applicable), and quantity requested:
Kit Kat - Green Tea (96)
Kit Kat - Passion Fruit (70)
Kit Kat - Royal Milk Tea (90)
Kit Kat - Mango (55)
Kit Kat - Strawberry (30)
Kit Kat - Citrus Golden Blend (30)
M&Ms ($2.50/160g) - Crispy (enough)
M&Ms ($2.50/160g) - Crispy Mint (5)
Coffee Crisp (25)
note: if someone expressed interest, but did not include an amount, I estimated a quantity of 10

General notes
I know that the Kit Kats are typically sold in the small packs of two sticks, and I'm assuming that M&Ms will be available in the smaller rectangle packaging.  In general, assume that the sizes will be the "small" sizes, unless otherwise noted or desired.

Disclaimer
I have not organized a GB before.  I am currently proxying for sprit's GB, but this is my first experience running a full-blown GB (assuming it works out.  ;) ).
As such, expect some things to go wrong.  I don't expect this to be flawless, and I hope you don't either.  But hopefully we can all get through this and enjoy some tasty treats in the end!   ^-^

I really want more Green Tea kit kats :D

The box I had last time, it was 12 bags of 12 packs of kit kats. I'd be interested in 3 bags so 36 packs of kit kats.

Down for some Kit Kats, I stupidly never tried the crazy flavors when I was in Japan!
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I'd be curious on pricing. I can get green tea kitkat in NYC, but not passionfruit.

If the kit kats are priced for individual packages I will take 15 of each flavor.  If they are by say a box I will take one of each.

I'd be interested if we could get the M&Ms doubleshot.  The legends wear off too easily from *normal* M&Ms and then I can't tell what letter I'm eating.

FYI:  I can ship to the international folks.  I just wasn't sure if it would be cheaper to have it proxied to them from the get-go, or go through here.  I'm not sure what sort of volume discounts we can get, if any, on these snacks.  That's something I need to dig deeper into.   :thumb:

Crispy M&M (10-20?) depending on pricing and stuff
maybe more if I see what other people are wanting :D

Good post to wake up to!  My only concern though is the possibility of the candies melting due to weather.  Maybe we should wait for it to be closer to the holidays?

These were always my favorite...but they aren't that hard to get here in the states.  My mom would always get them for me from chinese grocery stores.

I'm also interested in what other people think we should try...but I think one problem might be that they might not know what we don't have in the states.  I know I'm usually surprised when I see people(outside the US) get carepackages from the US because it seems like everyday stuff to me, only to find out they don't have it there.

M&Ms were designed to withstand ~40°C, but I think Kit-Kats would melt at around 25°C. :(

@CPT really, no coffee crisps in US? Those things always come in mini sizes during Halloween trick or treat candy combo bags.

Okay, KitKats are cool, and all, but what else ya got? Any int'l peeps want to weigh in here for us uninitiated?

Also, I run KitKat on two phones...
These were always my favorite...but they aren't that hard to get here in the states.  My mom would always get them for me from chinese grocery stores.
http://www.amazon.com/Japanese-Fruit-Gummy-Candy-Kasugai/dp/B0009F5B4G

I'm also interested in what other people think we should try...but I think one problem might be that they might not know what we don't have in the states.  I know I'm usually surprised when I see people(outside the US) get carepackages from the US because it seems like everyday stuff to me, only to find out they don't have it there.

I want some of those, but mango  :thumb:

Is it sad that this will be my first group buy?

1300+ posts and no GBs? I'd say that's absurd!

Yah. I don't understand flashy keysets or overpriced boards that work the same as the one I have. :p

^^ Flavors!
Edit saw the other links too. Holy crap so many ...

Okay. Now this is turning into every other IC/GB where we end up with too many options and **** never gets done. C'mon, Hoff, put your foot down and make the HARD choices. :D

My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

OP updated.  I'm working on securing proper pricing, and will update further once I know that.  I know of a few places to get the Kit Kats, but it would be great to get some sort of volume discount, so I'm exploring any options there.

Also, just some perspective: The Crispy M&M bags I'm finding on Amazon are over $6.00 for the 160g bag, which bueller has said he could probably secure for about $2.50.  Not to put a bunch of pressure on you bueller, but dang!  This is looking like some big cost savings for us!

Also, just in case it wasn't clear, this is more of a group-proxy than a group buy, since we aren't guaranteed volume discounts.  But by combining shipping, we can all save money!  Yay!   :thumb:

Another update: we will be purchasing M&Ms from bueller (huge thanks for helping us Americans out!), for an estimated price of $2.50 per 160g bag (subject to change).  These bags are larger than the original estimated size of "small".  Please take this into consideration when deciding how many you will want!  I suspect that the counts for M&Ms will drop drastically, but that is fine.  All that matters is that the interest exists.  And this isn't the GB phase yet anyway, so no worries.  I'm considering M&Ms "MOQ Met" for the time being.

More updates to come on the Kit Kat front.

Woah I didn't realize how big those were until I looked it up.  I think those are ~4x larger than the normal ones we buy like right before checkout I think....I'd probably still buy 10.  Though maybe less if I find some other candies that interest me (to fit it all in the flat rate box).

Heh, GeekSnack.

They have that mini bag of 12 of green tea kitkats on sale here for like 6 bucks a baggie :thumb:

Just throwing it out, because I'm a foodie, and I come across these super often. Google those that you dont know :p

Royce Chocolate (nama chocolates are no-go due to shipping conditions, but it's the best)
Caramel Corn
RitterSport Chocolates
Shiroi Koibito
Pocky (and Pejoy)
Hi-chew (those made in Japan ones....not those that are made in Taiwan, they taste very different)
Puccho

And this thing called Tokyo Banana, almost unattainable outside Japan due to the expiry date :-X

And my friends always swear by this little crispy thingy called fish muruku.........

P.S KitKats come in different types, there's the regional specialities in Japan with nearly 20-30 flavours........including the Kyoto Green Tea one (tastes totally different from the normal green tea ones, and costs more too)

EDIT: That's what I can throw out of the top of my head

I've never seen coffee crisp in the states :(

Really? That's crazy. It's one of my favorites. Didn't know they didn't export it.

There's Coffee Crisp McFlurries from McDonalds (though not always), ice cream, and ice cream bars, even mocha and latte flavors.

Perhaps if people are up for it, us Canadian members here can help out.

I've sent a large bag of Miss Vickie's Sweet Chili & Sour Cream to US via plane in a properly sized cardboard box and it was fine. Only problem with shipping chips is the amount of space it takes since they're pre-filled with lots of air.

Not a problem. I wonder if people would be interested in the Creme Brulee Kit Kat. There's an Asian mall not too far from me (GTA residents will know it as the Pacific Mall), and they have a few candy stores that carry all this stuff. Last visit, I grabbed the Strawberry Kit Kat, Green Tea, and Creme Brulee that you put in a toaster oven. They had some others but I didn't decide to get them.

Sounds great like a great idea! Very interested in snacks from around the world. I myself could supply local sweet and salty liquorices and maybe some weird things like tar candies.

I will probably not have the time and funds to buy anything before the end of the month but I would gladly empty a couple of local supermarkets. XP
You obviously liked my suggestions, do you have any other wishes?

I just know I love stroopwafels  ^.^ , but I don't know if there are other tasty things over there (I'm sure there are).  Do you have any recommendations?

Lol, stroopwafels are a classic amongst people from other countries. :P
Ever had a fresh one? Where the caramel is still hot and the waffle is really thin.
Drop... not so much. You really have to get used to them first.
The sweet ones are a lot more accessible than the salty ones.

Another one would be cinnamon candy cane or pillows. Giant Wilhelmina peppermints or hard pear candy if you want traditional candy.

It might be that things need to be timed to avoid some of the hotter temperatures that some places are currently experiencing. I am not sure whether a box of chocolates shipped through normal mail when temperatures are over 30 degrees Celsius will make it without completely melting.

I live in Holland. People love those things over here. Whenever family and friends come over from other countries we get a freshly made one (where the "stroop" is still warm). Only few people I have met did not like them. Dutch people you ask might be sick of them.

I'd be in for the Green Tea, Royal Milk Tea, Citrus Golden Blend, and the Crispy Mint M&Ms. Depending on prices I'd like at least 12 of each of the Kit Kats and 5-10 of the M&Ms.

As the Dutch are chipping in, what would you like from Belgium? Chocolats are not easy to sent (huge cost on packaging last time I looked), but we have something called cuberdon https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuberdon .
Cuberdons can only be preserved for about three weeks, after which period the inside begins to crystallize. This limited preservability is the reason why cuberdons are not exported outside of Belgium (According to Wikipedia), but I can always check and maybe try to send of really fresh ones.

haha, I love all three of those. Those "vruchtenhagel" are great, but people who are not from Holland do not always love it. Aniseed has a taste that might take some getting used to :D

As a kid, whenever I ate bread (Dutch eat a lot of bread for those who don't know), I was basically eating candy every day with these kind of toppings.

Haven't forgotten about this, just working out the most cost efficient way of shipping everything. Pretty sure if I keep each package under 2kg it will save a fairly decent amount of money.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Just expressing interest.  I'm just keeping rough tallies to note which items are definitely popular enough to warrant a purchase.   :thumb:

I was anticipating you would just send everything over to me in bulk and I would divy it up and add in the kit kats and things from other locations to send to the US people in one package.  Or do you have a different idea that would be better?

Oh yeah that was my plan too but our postal system is bull****. Anything over 2kg pretty much doubles the shipping cost so I'll just need to split them all up across a few different boxes to keep them under 2kg.

Mmmmm, Coffee Crisp. It's good to live in Canada where Coffee Crisp (and M&Ms) are in abundance.

Put me down for a *conditional* 5 x Kit Kat Mango and 5 x Kit Kat Passion Fruit.
I need to check my local Japanese/Korean supermarkets if they have those flavours available as I know that the Strawberry variant is definitely available.

Doh, just realized it was CONUS only :(

But my supermarket does have strawberry and green tea so i have been appeased slightly.

Speaking of foreign sweets. I just bought 25 packs of Maltesers from Amazon. They are british Malt balls 100x better than the stupid stuff here in U.S.

One thing they do that is really smart is that they ship their product with ice packs so they dont melt. Maybe we can do something similar.

So... how's it going?

Yes, I should be posting more updates here.  Sorry about that.

The M&M deal seems like it may not work out.  bueller had issues sending them for any cheaper than we could buy them from an Amazon proxy.  :(  But last I heard he was trying to figure out a way to ship them cheaper and make it work.

I've got some work to do with the Kit Kats, and that's on me.  I need to figure out how much it will cost to get them here, and then settle some other logistical things.  As for stroopwaffels, I had actually forgotten about them ( , I know) and will handle that soon.

So basically, I've got a lot of work to do!

Everyone!  I want to update this thread so you guys know I haven't forgotten.  And because I have information to share, I suppose.

I'm back from travelling and have some Coffee Crisps in hand.  It's nowhere near enough for this GB, but it did help me confirm that they are freaking delicious.

I also have some preliminary pricing information, but only for the Coffee Crisps.

Halverson is able to purchase a case of 48 bars for around $30 (maybe $35?), and can ship them to me for *hopefully* $25.  (I did say this is very preliminary pricing info)
That means that the price to me is $1.25 per bar.  (rounding up from $1.15, to account for unexpected fees)

Everyone involved in the buy would obviously also have to pay shipping fees to their doors, but does this price range seem appealing to people?  I know that I'm willing to pay it personally, because they're so delicious, but I need some feedback from you guys.

Also, does anyone in Canada have any leads on places to get these boxes cheaper?

Could you guys send stuff down here to Brazil in a boomerang or something like that? Cause I'm down with the Passion Fruit KK.

KK like okay or KK like haha in Brazilian online slang? Essa gíria brasileira é demais...

Maybe they will just stop being silly and only offering things in certain regions for no damn reason.

Is he getting them from Costco? If I remember correctly, the 48 pack is roughly $30 as you stated. My membership just expired, so I'll need to renew before I can test that out.

So there is a dollar store near me that sells full sized chocolate bars for $0.67. Maybe asking one of them if they would do a deal for a whole box?

Excellent question.  We're only in the IC phase of the buy, so it's still a month out at least I figure.  But if you're able to secure some great pricing, I would strongly consider just throwing down a bunch of my own money and essentially selling them at cost to others.

Dollar stores and their food are usually creeping closer to the best before date. If you happen to try this (and I can check locally as well), we just need to make sure what we're getting is not going to hamper the quality for our fellow GHers.

Good call. That is definitely an issue. If we go through this route, the quality wont be as good as costco. I have had some of their stuff before and some of the bars taste normal, others taste a little stale.

OH MY GOD.

Man, this picture reminded me of a popsicle that used to exist here in Brazil (90's).

It was black with a red cream inside it, can't remember the name.

My god, it was delicious, there's probably 17 years or something that I last ate one, they're gone for almost 2 decades by this time.

The memories...

Just a supermarket a block or two away from my office. They always have lots of Japanese snacks. I think those were the only 2 special kit kats though. 1 bag cost about $6.3CAD after tax. (And the Canadian dollar is dropping like nuts :'()

My girlfriend just bought some BlackMlik (Australian clothing) and she got sent Tim Tams.

THESE THINGS ARE GOOD

I suggest we get Tim Tams!

I'm not sure the difficulty of this or interest but just thought id throw it out there if it wasnt out there already.

I'm interested in the less common flavors like Salted Caramel and Raspberry :p

I'm interested in the less common flavors like Salted Caramel and Raspberry :p

The flavored Tim Tams kind of suck to be honest, when I've had them they've tasted super artificial. Can't beat the original.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

My girlfriend just bought some BlackMlik (Australian clothing) and she got sent Tim Tams.

THESE THINGS ARE GOOD

I suggest we get Tim Tams!

I'm not a huge chocolate fan sadly (wasn't allowed to eat chocolate as a kid) but I'm planning on trying to original flavor as soon as I can get to a World Market :)

For now I only have those two flavors :(

You sure you can't get Tim Tams in the USA? We get them imported here in Canada. I missed them so much from when I was a kid back in NZ, so I was super happy to find them here!

Just an FYI regarding the status of this: I'm planning to make a test purchase of some Kit Kats from Japan in the coming few weeks, to see how shipping prices turn out.  After that, I will eat them.  And then make some decisions regarding this GB.  I would really like to kick it off by early 2015.

As far as I know, World Market is the only store here that sells them. They only have these to choose from:
http://www.worldmarket.com/search.do?query=Tim+tams

Pepperidge Farm apparently sold them during special months (Ovtober to March according to wiki) and were sold at normal grocerie stores but I'm not sure if that is true as of today. People said they are different from the original anyway so I'm not interested.

I'll just have to pick them up when I can or get someone to ship some over from Canada or Australia :P
