I'd be so in for the Alps set
Yeeeaahhh I will go for Alps :thumb:
Hello Geekhackers,
I just wanted to let ya'll know that I will be launching the new LightCycle full set group buy on March 1st 2017. The kit is locked in and there won't be any changes.
It will be $160 per set and available either with MX or Alps stems.
I am running this set close to the line and am only collecting less than $4 per set for myself. The MOQ for each stem is 50.
I will take orders for 17 days (group buy ends on March 17th)
Sincerely,
TheVanManShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/HN6MwaB.png)
Yaaaas! Thanks Evan!
I can't tell but are there enough 1.50's for Winkeyless? I don't mind having to buy separate 7u spacebars. Great job, as always!
Might just buy one of each. It I'm def in for alps
Alps and I'm in.:thumb:
I just bought a 10 piece set of 1x1 DSA blanks from PMK to test out on Matias Clicky switches. Going to make sure these feel delicious before I commit to both alps AND mx :)
I'll try to write up my findings in a week or so. Do you think doubleshot will come out any thicker than their PBT blanks? I'll have to account for that, so it won't be a perfect 1 to 1 comparison.
Now I have a conundrum. A nice one, but still.I would say to sell the MD set and get this one, I would also recommend waiting until the order for this is placed with SP. I'm doing everything in my power to make sure this doesn't fail and I have accurate quotes this time around and all that, but I would feel awful if you sold your set and didn't get this one.
I have Lightcycle from the MD drop. I didn't get the board then; can't quite remember what I was thinking, but I did get the caps, thinking that I would end up with a Van at some point.
And I did go in for one of those uberclassy nickel-finish beasts. But before that, I also went in for the Roadkit.
So now, for a truly swank (or at least matching) setup, I suppose I should sell someone the MD drop kit and order this, so numpad keys are available.
Or is there a chance that a numpad kit might be available some day?

going out for you guys, gonna run the compat set as well. see op for updated details.

You know the respect I have for you and your work and how I feel about this set, Evan. Thank you for bringing it back, I'll do my best to try and get an order in when the time comes, best of luck.

And I'll preemptively assert that any sales that may or may not occur resulting from this conversation are my own fault. I'd feel awful if you ended up feeling awful for giving me advice.
evangs,
I have questions/requests regarding the Alps set:
1. Can you tell me what lubricant would be safe to put on the keycap stems? I hear these DSA caps run extra tight and even seen pictures of broken stems. If possible can you show on your Youtube channel where to apply the lube and how much?
2. I don't know what the correct terminology is but there is supposed to be extra "crap" that needs to be removed with an exacto knife on the stem. Do you (or anyone) have pictures of what exactly needs to be cut from the stem?
3. Because of #1 are DSA caps "happier" on Vintage Alps stems vs. Matias? From reading archives it looks like the Matias stems are a bit tighter.
Any help/advice you can give would be extremely appreciated. This will easily be the most expensive set I've ever considered purchasing and want to give the stems the best chance at a long life.
I am definitely in for 1 Alps set :thumb: I am happy to see you bring this set back evan. Thanks a lot :pawesome :D I am very excited to see this set made!
I would be cautious about lubing the stem mounts. Yes, Matias mounts make it a bear to remove keycaps (I always fear I'm going to pull the switch out because I have to pull with so much force), but once installed, keycaps tend to be a bit wobbly, especially keys wider than 1.5u. The Caps Lock key on my KPB V60 mini wobbles like a weeble! Putting lube onto the stems might make every keycap wobble and sway in very unpleasant ways.I'm pretty sure that as is the case with MX-style switches, the wobble caused by the gap between the slider and the housing and not by the gap between the keycap and the slider.

I have the Alpine Winter set, which is an Alps set also made by SP. There isn't "extra" material. It's just that the Alps stems that come out of SP's molds fit really tightly in Matias switches. If you never plan to remove the caps once installed, you will not have to shave the corners. If you want to be able to remove the caps without risking damage to the caps or switches, you should shave the corners of the stems prior to installing the caps. All you have to do is take a blade and run it along the corners of the stem a few times so the corners become a bit "rounded".Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/ISbu2bM.png)
Removing material from the corners will allow the caps to be installed and removed more easily. The degree of ease depends on how much you shave off the stems. Be wary though, if you shave off too much, the caps can come off quite easily. None of my caps will fall off if I flip my board upside down, but for better or worse, some of them can be removed with very little effort. It's possible that some might say they aren't tight enough, so just a word of caution.

You could use the tape trick if the caps ever get to loose. Place a small piece of regular tape on the switch, and press the cap over it. It should provide a thick enough cushion to keep the cap snugly on there. I use this method for poorly made artisan stems :P .

For shame!
Seriously though, thank you for the tip, but I honestly don't know why anyone would put a glorious set like LightCycle DSA on an Alps board and then ever take them off. I mean, its not like there is a better keycap set out there to replace them with. And given how rare it is that anyone designs a DSA set and runs the GB with Alps mounts as an option, the chances that any other DSA set--much less a better one--will come along seems virtually nil.
I am confident that LightCycle DSA will be on my KPB V60 mini for life. Y'all who plan to put them on with the prospect that you might take them off are batsh*t crazy if you ask me... :p
A fair point!
Unfortunately for me, I don't think my KPB V60 mini keyboard is compatible with any third party case. There really needs to be a standard established for that...

Actually... you CAN put it in any standard 60% case. However, it only screws in on the sides and by the space bar, so you will need to put some support under it for those without built in support (which is most cases). I used some craft foam and stacked it up between the switch rows on the back. BUT! the TEX cases with the raised grooves don't even need that. The board fits like a glove.
Like this one: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1618
Fits perfectly. The usb connection is almost incompatible, but works.
It also fits well in the Pok3r cases because they also have built in support, and not just standoffs.
The challenge, and where you need to add your own support, is in the cases like the royal glam or these Chinese cases:
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Customized-KC60-Full-Set-Aluminum-Case-Programmable-PCB-Steel-Plate-Switches-LED-For-60-Standard-Layout/429151_32620290856.html
Like I said, if you just put some material for support between the switch rows, you'll be fine. I had my v60 Matias Click in the Royal Glam for several months and it worked well. I do like the simplicity of the stock case though. And it would look nice with light cycle.
To be doubly sure (if that's a word), I'll but mine in a Pok3r case and take some photos tonight. I'll post back here later.

I wanted to put my V60 mini into a Lambo case, but photos of the KBP board showed that there weren't enough holes in the right places to secure it to the case.
But there aren't the necessary holes drilled into the PCB (or plate?) to make all three of those holes usable without modifying the V60 mini, right?
I see!
Well I bought mine in Fall of 2016 so surely mine has the three holes and should fit the Lambo, though it may need some standoffs or something, right?
Thanks for those photos.
When I look at the bottom of my Pok3r, there are no exposed holes at all and only 4 DIP switches. Why is there an exposed hole near the bottom pad on yours and 6 DIP switches?
Will this support 1800 and 75% layout? As a Dolch-themed fans, I will surely join if so.
Thanks
Woohooo!MX plz
ETA: Ok I got over excited and had to reply first then read... From the look of that size guide do fill out an ErgoDox I'm going to need the compat set as well due to all those 125 keys, not 150. So first time around it was going to be $160 for it all and I was covered, now to be covered it's $270? ugh. novelty/cool factor quickly losing ground to cost. Can't justify that.
I am eagerly waiting on this one but have a question, can we get the plastic color codes listed? I know that HTML RGB Color don't match up exactly and I'd like to get a better idea. I'm asking mostly because I'm color coordinating a custom case and cable to match for when I get the keys.
the color codes are GX, GY, and BFQ
You okay with people buying multiple sets evangs?
I've seen some group buys where it's not allowed, but I figured as you're also offering Alps it might be worth at least buying a set of each stem type..
That's what I'm likely to do, assuming it is allowed.
Could you provide a photo of the V60 mini in the Pok3r case, but viewed from the bottom? I'm curious what the 6-DIP switch block looks like given the small size of the window provided on the Pok3r case.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I didn't get a photo but I stuck it in there to check and it looks like it blocks off the #1 DIP switch :(
Tex case fits fine though
I was wondering, which stabs do the ALPS caps use?
These are abs correct? I would love it even more if it were pbt...

Can't currently dyesub lighter colors onto darker bases, unfortunately, and SA isn't set up for doubleshot PBT as far as I know.

10 weeks after GB closes. Then it should be shipping to us around May 31st, if everything goes smoothly.

SUPER EXCITED, can't wait to get my set.
Just wondering if there are gonna be any price drops for MOQ on this set?
I'm still gonna pick up a set anyways but might pick up two sets if there is a price drop.
No, I wish there washttps://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/5wsybi/buying_the_mcp_must_be_destroyed_lightcycle_is/decuv7s/
Also, I don't see anything posted for the new group buy on r/MechanicalKeyboards or r/mechmarket
Gotta get Alps to 50!

Evangs, did you get any complaints in R1 about the double shot implementation?
From this thread:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=87816.msg2374448#msg2374448
Quote:
My only experience with dsa alps was the lightcycle set that came with my minivan - and it was delicate as can be. I ripped a couple stems off just trying to remove a cap from the switch and from what I could tell, the doubleshot did not adhere like it should to both colors. Wouldn't be a problem with blanks though if i'm correct in diagnosing the problem but i'd definitely be weary of buying more sets especially if they were SP priced.
My V80 has some kinda costar type stabs but with out normal mounts. It definitely is a standards problem getting a mod set that works for everyone.

I got a couple complaints, but there were a lot of people who didn't complain. I have yet to get a set myself so I can't actually speak to it myself. A friend of mine got the alps MiniVan and he reported no issues, so I don't know if people were just new to alps tightness or if there is actually an issue.
Would it still be possible to add another spacebar kit? I really need the 7u spacebars, but not all the international keys. :(
So as a sort of dry run, I was able to transfer a Pok3r case to my KBP V60 mini, securing it with the two side screw holes and the bottom one under the spacebar. So assuming the Lambo case has these same screw holes, it should be perfect for this board. Now comes the long wait for the keycaps. :p

alps base is halfway, both compat kits need some love. Lets rally and get each kit to moq (50)
Given that content gets pushed out of sight in less than 24 hours over there, a 48 hour window seems twice as long as it needs to be.
Alps is a teeny, tiny market. And most Alps fans only seem to want to use vintage keycaps that came from either an IBM clone or an AEK. Those of us interested in LightCycle DSA are a niche of a niche.
If the Alps kit doesn't reach MOQ, then I'm just going to say f**k it and sell my KBP V60 mini.

On top of that, not everyone is a fan of the DSA profile.
Ordered MX Base + Compatibility, and a matching cable. Hope the MX compatibility set meets MOQ, I need this on my 40%.

I dropped a post in the Alps Appreciation thread just now. Maybe it'll find some traction with folks who (somehow) aren't yet aware this GB is back on and who recognize how cool this keycap set is.
I will likely order the Alps base kit this weekend. This GB was reintroduced after I'd made a commitment not to make any more online purchases for a while, so I'll have to break my rule for this (M65-A and F77 both set me back quite a bit).
On top of this, my Matias V80's left arrow stopped working (no register followed by terrible, consistent chatter after reseating the cap), so I'm going to have to send it in for repair, which killed the mood for this set a little.

I've had chatter on a few keys on my V60. Just taking the switch apart and putting it back together fixed the issue for me. I think it has something to do with lube on the contact or just a misaligned contact inside the switch. A good re-seating is probably all it needs. Word of caution, they're a ***** to get back together :)
You know, it seems to me that since the base kit only provides two 1.5u bottom row modifier keys, it is only suitable for the KBP V60 mini, which is the only Alps-based board I know of that uses all 1.25u bottom row modifiers, and then you still end up with a whole lotta unused keys...
I must surely be missing something...
You might be right. But the set doesn't cover a brand new Matias board either.
You might be right. But the set doesn't cover a brand new Matias board either.
That's a good point. The V80 has four 1.25u keys, but the actual Matias Tactile Pro has four 1.5u and two 1u keys on the bottom row. Are there any other modern commercial Alps/Matias brand boards out there?

The base set should fit the Clueboard without any issues.
The problem is with support for full-size Alps boards.
The base kit comes with base keys, function row keys, navcluster keys, and numpad keys. You would think it was intended to fit a full-size board, except there is none out there being made today with Matias/Alps switches that make use of an all-1.25u bottom row. Consequently, there is an unfortunate disconnect between the composition of the Alps-based LightCycle DSA base kit and the format of full-size boards it is intended to accommodate.
I didn't really notice this until I started considering getting a second Alps kit to put on a new full-size board (i.e., a Matias Quiet Pro).

You can build yourself a Cluepad to make use of the numpad keys.
I suspect the kits were designed to simultaneously be accessible to newer Alps boards (e.g. V60 and V80 MTS verisons) and older Alps boards (e.g. AEK's and the like). But as always, you can't please everyone. If more 1.5u mods were included, someone who only wants this set to put on a V60 may cry foul at having to pay for all the extra keys. On the other hand, excluding them alienates people looking to use this set for a nonstandard layout. Where does one draw the line? In any case, the compatibility kit solves that issue, albeit at cost and a separate MOQ (which of course more people will complain about).

Definitely would've joined for Alps, but then I realized the only Alps board I have has a weird layout: AEK bottom with some 1.25u caps. :-\

Hey, that gives me an idea. Once this set is delivered, maybe we could start a collection of unused 1.5u HACK and DISK keycaps. These could be doled out to needy Matias keyboard owners (who only ordered the base kit) on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Oh man, I'm getting nervous for Alps.
IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong) the 1st Lightcycle GB was cancelled because the Compat kits didn't meet MOQ and those potential cancellations made the core sets not hit MOQ either. I really hope we can reach the Alps minimum order; I wonder if there's somewhere we can promote this...
I just don't think very many Alps fans like DSA keycaps. If they're going to spend over $100 for keycaps they're invariably going to want Cherry profile.
ALPS flat spherical?
Right. So for all intents and purposes there are no spherical keycaps available to put on my mini. LightCycle DSA is my only prospect.
Think of it this way: your ErgoDox was only half a keyboard without the right keycaps. It is only natural to spend another $100-150 on the other half...

if an ergodox (infinity) is only $100-150 ?
then I would have "another half of money" left to spend for the right keycaps, but the right keycaps are also $270+ instead of $100-150.
for us Germans a DIY ergodox infinity KIT is about 283 EUR (~ US$302) with S&H, tax/customs fees, creditcard foreign fee, ...
ok, I had the chance not order the blank black DSA caps at MD and save $50 and sitting on a useless keyboard w/o keycaps ?
sorry for venting ...
@Evan, yes I read you making only 2-4 bucks per kit. SP has no real competition.
Maybe it depends on the keyset you buy? The cost for an SA Dasher set for an ISO DE ErgoDox was $147. And it was only $100 is you were using an ANSI board (yes, being part of a tiny EU consumer base added a $47 premium). I don't think $100-150 is out of the ballpark for an ErgoDox set.but SA Dasher is MX stem only (and I ordered it, also have some MX boards)
Ah, right, I was speaking about MX. Apologies for (my) confusion.
Yeah, Alps makes everything more expensive. Worse, custom keycaps for Alps is almost a non-existent product category! It is the primary reason why I have adamantly avoided Alps switches. And I strongly suggest that anyone else who likes to customize their keycaps, or prefers sphericals like I do, simply avoid Alps switches all together and spare themselves the misery.
My KBP V60 mini was a low-cost experiment to see how Matias tactiles felt. The switches are pretty nice, but 1. they are quite wobbly, 2. without LightCycle DSA they are worthless to me, and 3. they can't hold a candle to silenced Topre switches. Consequently, I don't think I'll buy another Alps-based keyboard ever again.
[10/12/2013 22:36:42] Wellington Diesel: but anyways, why's there so much wobbling with your switches?
[10/12/2013 22:36:51] Wellington Diesel: I mean, the keycaps wobble a lot if you try to move them
[10/12/2013 22:37:23] Edgar Matias: it prevents them from catching if you press the key off-centre
[10/12/2013 22:37:43] Edgar Matias: wobble is your friend

[10/12/2013 22:38:37] Edgar Matias: probably just lack of awareness
I feel that if more people were aware that this was up and running once more the orders for those would perk up a fair bit...
There is a forum post by E. Matias out there where he defends the wobble:Quote[10/12/2013 22:36:42] Wellington Diesel: but anyways, why's there so much wobbling with your switches?

What garbage! The whole point of having custom switches is for typing comfort and personal preference. If people don't like the wobble, that's reason in itself that it's a drawback for those users. End of story.
The fact that Alps need wobble to make the click leaf work is not a feature. It's a drawback.
I feel that if more people were aware that this was up and running once more the orders for those would perk up a fair bit...
No doubt!
The real question is, how do we make more people aware of this GB? All the usual channels have been informed...multiple times.
Per Matias he is retooling the current switches for less wobble:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65528.msg2368973#msg2368973
If only there was a way to inform MassDrop members of a related non-MassDrop group buy...

I think you could, you can already modify Matias/Alps switches without desoldering. I'm not sure if the springs are the same dimensions as Cherry springs though, so you might need a different source of springs, but something to try out.
Also if the new switches have the same top-half housing/slider, you might be able to just pop them open and swap without desoldering. I don't know how much they're changing...

Damn, ALPS is not gonna happen.
Refund, actually. Not interested in MX, got too much of them already.
I vote for running the group buy until both base kits reach MOQ. Then decide what to do for the int/compat kits at that time.

How much would the price go up if the compat kits ran at a MOQ of 25 or 30? I'd be fine with paying a little more to get the caps I need for my layout.

Let's get it to moq. I am fine running longer and actually I can close the MX on time and just have the alps stay open as SP treats them as separate orders anyway

I understand that getting it to MOQ is the optimal solution, and I'm not trying to be combative, but this does little to answer my question.
I'm exclusively interested in MX, and I need the compat kit for full legend coverage with my layout. Using blanks/mismatching legends isn't a solution that I'm particularly fond of - is submitting an order at a higher price/lower MOQ even a possibility?

I can check but it will be quite a bit higher. I want each kit to make it and if it makes sense to keep orders open longer I'll do it. MX compat isn't too far off

Again, I'm not trying to be combative here, and I'm speaking from a place of complete ignorance with how running a group buy works.
At least for me, I'm fine with paying more to get the full compat kit if we can't get a 50 MOQ. It goes without saying that I'd be 100% fine with waiting a few more weeks for the kit to tip if that's the route you'd prefer to take.

Yes. Currently I am going to keep the buy open until MX compat and alps base both tip. Alps compat will need to see big numbers in that time if there is hope for that set.
Now for some real life photos of the set

You mentioned somewhere that SP treats Alps and MX as separate, so you can submit the MX order separate from the Alps.
This means you're going to hold MX until compat hits MOQ and submit the MX. So you would be delaying past 3/17/2017.
I kind of want to get in on MX too, but want to know if I have more time or not =)
It's staying open for probably a couple weeks at least.
Judging from the price jump between quantity 50 and quantity 25 for some of the Dasher kits, I would expect the price of the int/compat kit to be at least $150 at MOQ 25.

Now I have a conundrum. A nice one, but still.

Honestly though, I'm just grateful it is running at all. I don't mind waiting a little longer if that's what it takes to make it happen. Hell, I will have waited 2.5 years for my Round 6 Honeywell caps; this is nothing...

No, SP raised their costs to him. He's making pretty much nothing on this- just wants to get it done. My supposition with the Round 6 debacle, and changes in their policies is that they don't want to deal with individuals for group buys anymore. But that's just my supposition.

SP doesn't add a premium just because a set is being run by an individual. The cost is representative of the size and complexity of the kits, and these are large kits with custom legends at very low quantities. The prices are different from before because the kits are different from before (and the previous prices were just plain wrong after the kits were restructured post-quote).
Will this support 1800 and 75% layout? As a Dolch-themed fans, I will surely join if so.

Does the base set cover 1800 or does it require Int set as well?
My understanding is that evangs got a quote from SP and then split up the kits assuming that he could just divide the original price proportionally between them, which turned out to be woefully incorrect. The price of the secondary kit was so high that it jeopardized the viability of the base kit, and so the whole GB had to be scrapped.
The new GB is based on just two kits which are different from the selection of kits from before, including more novelty keys than before (e.g., there are more 1.25u novelty keys than last time).

We are currently on track for SP delivering to me at the end of June. I just checked them this week and so far so good
Welp, I'm disappointed I decided to build an ALPs board now and not two months ago.I'm in the same boat. I would trade my vintage dolch PAC65 board for a set of these. Maybe if we are ridiculously lucky, a couple of people will have second thoughts and send us PMs
I'd love to see this set go for another round later.

I didn't think DSA has similar backlog to SA profile at SP.It didn't at first. Once SA became so backlogged I think people started to move to DSA as a backup, now it's getting bogged down as well. When Miami Dolch dropped in May it had almost a 6 month ETA. This GB was submitted at the start of April, so it was only a month ahead if that is any indication.
The issue isn't the profile, it is the double-shot legend process. SP has only so many machines (and operators) for doing them, and the process is substantially slower than dye-sublimation.
I've been in contact with Signature Plastics. The keycaps are not yet finished which is why they have not yet been shipped to me. They are hard at work completing the order and should be shipping soon.

It might be a smart move.
I certainly want them to expand, but maybe they've considered and realize they cannot keep up with the Chinese price and production. Also, this could very well be the "bubble" of the enthusiast keycap market. I'm not saying I want that to be true, but if it was, investing in a lot of overhead cost might not be wise.

I am so sad I missed this buy. I need this set so bad for my LSv3 build :( Hopefully someone will let a set go
The V60 has Alps stabilizers on the 2U keys and Cherry stabilizers on the spacebar. So the Spacebar is good to go, but you might need these for the 2U stabilizers: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keyboard-parts/cherry-mx-keycap-stabilizer-insert-2pcs.html
These are "Costar" inserts, they should hook onto your Alps 2U wire and allow you to plug into the SP Alps caps (which use Cherry stems for stabilizers). I'm not 100% positive if these will fit the Alps wires but this kit from Matias leads me to believe they just work.
Matias kit: https://matias.store/collections/keycaps-and-switches-1/products/stabilizer-and-hook-set
That kit from Matias is mostly for Alps stabilizers, but you need enough for 4x Cherry stabilizers. (and I think there is only enough for 2x)
The problem is that the stabilizer stem mounts for the 2.75u right Shift key from SP are too close together (in towards the center) and so the standard stabilizer wire that comes with a KBP V60 mini won't reach the inserts. You'll need to repurpose (i.e., unbend and rebend into shape) a longer stabilizer wire, like a Matias spacebar wire, so you can make the "arms" at the ends long enough to reach the inserts.
I regret not getting in on this extended set (I have the original run on a minivan and it just looks so good)... will there be any leftovers?
Good to hear, I was really hoping we wouldn't have to wait until late August/early September for these.
Talked to SP yesterday, they said they should ship on Monday. Everyone cross your fingers that I get the caps next week and we can finally start to enjoy them!

Good point. Not sure if those smk switches use ~19mm spacing like MXHe'd still need an alps plate
Those PCBs are for SMK Alps which have the same/very similar cut-out as MX afaik, so they should theoretically fit the stock M65 plate. I could be wrong though.

How do you plan to accommodate the two extra stems on all the keys 2u and wider? Those stems will hit the wide, raised plate "roof" over each switch, preventing the keys from depressing properly.

I'll probably drill the case...
Every time I see a new post in here I keep hoping its evangs with an update, but it is not to be.
Talked to SP yesterday, they said they should ship on Monday. Everyone cross your fingers that I get the caps next week and we can finally start to enjoy them!
Yep, it's what I'm doing with the boards I'm modifying w/ JTK sliders, just mimicking the Novatouch stabilizer cut-outs. Bit tedious.
But now KBDFans has silencing rings for cheap, so I can silence these boards at the same time :D

Actually was thinking of these: https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/products/topre-keyboard-silence-x-120pcs
The one you linked are just o-rings, these are clones/copies of the original Topre silencing ring. Might look on Taobao or something and see if I can find it cheaper. He usually marks it up a little bit on the shopify page.

Hey Evan, did you hear anything from SP yet? Did the caps actually ship when SP said they would?

:D I've got one of the round 1 norbauer cases. Beautiful piece of work. I have the white one with GMK skeletor on it, but plan on putting dasher on when it arrives. I may have to do a Tron photoshoot inbetween.
I've got one of the retro teal R2 ones coming that I plan on using with Lightcycle. Plan on posting the entire buildlog once everything is here
Any word on when extras will be hitting the shop? I have been checking a couple of times a day. I am really hoping to get an MX Base set of these. I am so envious of everyone in this drop.

I got a shipping notification, not sure if it's both sets or just 1 (I ordered Alps then added MX a week later)
Still gotta build my boards for Alps to fit, although I might stick the MX set on my Norbatouch (Brushed Blue case)

Imgur compressed this to hell and back, so I uploaded it here. Please excuse the poor quality, it's overcast so the light isn't great and the shadows/highlights make it really difficult to show the colors of the set accurately, especially with the gray throwing off white balance. But that said... here's LightCycle on the Titan Grey TX-CP.
Here I am, furiously refreshing my Gmail tab to see if I've gotten a shipping notification, and you've already got your caps...something, something, patience is a virtue, blah, blah...
Your board looks great!
I'll be packing a bunch more orders tonight, goal is to have 100% shipped by tomorrow night :D

Just got my shipping notification. Also remembered that I've got a Bananasplit on order.
According to tracking this wasn't picked up yet, if that's the case, can you put it on hold and ship it together with the Bananasplit? That would save me a whole trip to the customs office which is, like I said, at the other end of the city.
If it's too late it can't be helped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It it's not picked up by USPS when I get home I can give it a shot, but it's pretty likely they will have swung by before I get home.
Well, I was hoping to post a photo of my KPB V60 mini with my shiny new LightCycle DSA keycaps installed, but the whole process was an unmitigated disaster. I wasn't inclined to buy another Alps/Matias-based keyboard before this debacle, but I am adamant about avoiding them now.
I may be able to salvage it a little, but the stabilized keys will forever have reduced key travel thanks to the minor incompatibility between MX stab inserts and Matias stab wires. Had I known they would bind the way they do, I would have tried to bend the stab wires a bit ahead of time to ease matters, but there's no fixing that now. You can't remove these keycaps once they are installed (the stem will simply break off from the inside of the keycap before the keycap will ever come free from the switch).
Case in point: the "U" key stem bent/broke while I was trying to install it, and I had to glue it back into place. Hopefully it will still work after the glue has solidified. Also, one of the 1.25u Recognizers broke from its stem completely when I tried to remove the key, so now I have to try and glue it to the bit of stem that is forever stuck in the switch slider.
I knew going into this that I'd never be able to remove the keycaps once they were installed, but I didn't think I'd need to even try. I shouldn't have tried with that Recognizer keycap and I've paid the price.
Lastly, I didn't pay close enough attention to the fact that the first DIP switch on the board is covered/inaccessible once placed into the Lambo case. The access port for the DIP switches is designed for five or fewer switches, not six, and naturally the one I need to change can't be reached. So I need to remove the board from the case so I can flip that switch (I need the Caps Lock key to become an FN key), and so I can better align the board in the case. Currently, it is too close to the left side, posing binding problems for keys like that 1.25u Recognizer key in the Ctrl position. Of course, it is very difficult getting to the tiny screws because the keycaps are in the way, so re-casing may work out or it may not.
What a mess...
I appreciate the offer! The only key that might need replacing is the "U" key (if my repair job isn't strong enough to survive insertion into the switch slider). The 1.25u Recognizer is strictly a glue-on job at this point since there is an irremovable piece of stem stuck in the switch, so having a replacement keycap wouldn't help.
So do you guys think if we shave off of the corners a decent amount that we'll have better success with the alps caps? I haven't received my shipping notice yet, but I should probably look at selling these off on r/mm if you think modding won't help.

only if you need to remove them. I also realized they are talking about matias switches. I have my alps caps on old alps switches and didn't have issues pushing them in so they may not be as tight. If you are dealing with Matias then you may want to try shaving them down, but if that is too scary then yeah you might just want to sell them :/

Okay, I'm totally down for modding them if that will do the trick. I probably only need to remove them for reasons like evagns said... recasing or fixing stabilizers. So, is there a guide anywhere to how people are shaving them? Is it just the scraping the corners with an xacto?
If no one is sure, I wouldn't mind picking up some white Alps and just swapping out the matias switches in my V60. However, I've never looked into buying alps (past matias), so I'm not sure where to source them. Ideas?

2. I don't know what the correct terminology is but there is supposed to be extra "crap" that needs to be removed with an exacto knife on the stem. Do you (or anyone) have pictures of what exactly needs to be cut from the stem?
You might try normal MX stab wires, but they may not fit. I think they might be too thick for one thing. And they definitely won't fit the 2.75u Shift key. For that key I didn't even use a stab wire at all (I don't use that key so it doesn't really matter).

I had a V60MTS and I ended up bending the existing wire to fit the stab positions on the SP caps. I also filed down the stab wire holder a little to give the wire a little more clearance since it was bent to an acute angle.

So how does DSA feel on the Matias switches?
So how does DSA feel on the Matias switches?
So how does DSA feel on the Matias switches?
I can only speak for myself, but these DSA keycaps feel way better than the Tai Hao Dolch keycaps I had on before.
I hope you have much better success with the stabilizers than I did. But to be fair, I just assumed perfect compatibility, which was probably foolish on my part.
The Lambo case is a huge upgrade from the cheap plastic case that the V60 comes in. I further improved it by putting strips of sorbothane acoustic dampening rubber in the case before placing the board into it. Not that Matias switches really need dampening (they are dampened internally already), but every little bit helps, and the extra weight (of both the aluminum and the sorbothane--which is suprisingly heavy) makes the board feel that much more stable and impressive.
You just have to go in with the knowledge that you have to mod the stems from SP. There's no way around it right now, until SP creates a new stem mold that fits Matias switches better. I checked the new Matias batch w/ my 40% Lightcycle and it was super tight, so I didn't force it.
What I saw w/ AEK caps is the stem is more like an octagon than a rectangle, so the corners are trimmed in a bit. That's my plan for these sets... just shave off the corner a bit.
Can you explain better how you would fix them if you did it again? You mentioned bending them
Can you explain better how you would fix them if you did it again? You mentioned bending them
The problem is that the vertical "arms" of the stab wire are a tiny bit too tall. As a result they push against the "forward" wall of the MX stab insert and prevent the key from going down all the way smoothly. I would bend the arms in (towards the center of the keycap) a little bit, reducing their effective vertical length by a fraction of a millimeter (I would also have to counter-bend the arm ends "up" so they aren't angling down). That small reduction in length might just be enough to eliminate the binding. But I will never know.
Here, a diagram might help:

Valzaan: It is not a problem with MX. The stems on the Alps caps may need to have extra plastic cut but even then the caps are a tight fit.
Stick with MX and you'll be happy man.
Not sure if I missed it, but I see that we have extra F and J keys (thanks for that :thumb: ) but...I don't see any deep dish for homing. If it was not part of the design, that's cool, but if SP messed up, well here is my complaint.
Otherwise, definitely an awesome set evangs! WTG!

This set provides homing bumps instead of deep dishing.
So I was able to fix up my V60 mini with the judicious application of a little glue and very careful re-casing. The Recognizer key in the L-Ctrl position sits higher than the other keys after the gluing. The stabilized keys sit a little higher because of the binding issue with the stab wires. But I was able to set the DIP switches the way I want and the keyboard works fine, though the lack of full key travel on the Return key feels odd.

Caps arrived this morning! I drilled out the stabs on my 87u, now I need to figure out the spacebar situation.
You should run GMK Lightspeed :O. I need tron keps
I managed to seat ten caps before breaking a stem. :(
I've been cutting and/or sanding the stems with good results, taking each one off after seating it to make sure I've shaved it down enough that it comes back out easily. I might try making the stems shorter too. I think part of the weakness is that they are a tad too long and also unsupported (no cross support at the base like the tai hao caps).
I disassembled the switch and am currently trying to get the stem out of the slider so that I might save the switch and possibly cap.
So is there anyone out there using the alps kits on Matias switches that hasn't broken the caps? If so, speak up :D
At this point I'm actually considering picking up an alps64 PCB and some old alps switches. At least then I wouldn't have to worry about getting the stabilizers bent correctly with only one shot. Are we certain that the fit issue is only with Matias switches?

The way they double shot the larger mods leaves a ridge running under one cruciform post. This usually wouldn't be an issue, BUT, bc of the previous issue, it's really easy to see that one side of the modifier sticks up higher. Easy solution, hold insert with pliers a shave the cruciform stem to make it shorter.

Just so you know, they actually double-shot MX DSA caps the same way, at least for the left shift key.

just got these installed on my keyboard. it's my first DSA set and i'm honestly enjoying typing on them more than i expected to. do they usually have this rough finish to them?

I'm happy to report that I'm about 3/4 through the process of shaving the stems. Once I got used to the process it's gone faster. I'm confident the caps are not too tight. However... holy balls, the stabilizers are a nightmare. I managed to finally get one about 90% right after an hour.
I would just tell anyone planning to put these on a V60 to avoid it. I mean, I'm up for a challenge, but I have many other precious boards if this goes South. Ha
The only problem I have has so far besides the stabilizers is the light cycle caps novelty. Apparently the stem is like 1/2 a mm shifted to the left, so the cap rubs on the edge of my v60. This doesn't happen when i use the Regular caps lock key, so I'll probably just use that one
I agree with Kavik that some of the stems are just weak. You can feel them flex just by pushing on them. So, be careful, kiddos.
First I straightened the top bends of the stabilizers. Then I rebent them at a shorter height. I had to clip a very small amount off of each end to keep it from hitting the switch, as you have noticed for yourself.
It helps to have two sets of pliers in hand, one of them needle nosed to help with bends. They are a ***** to cut. I think I ruined my cutters they were so hard.
Only have 3 caps left to put on. Of course now the T key has developed serious chatter... all the luck. I tried to disassemble and fix it but it didn't really help. Now I'm in the process of swapping it out with the right alt key since I don't use it much.
Okay, got her done. Man, what a challenge. Totally worth it though. DSA is my favorite profile and it feels SO much better than the OEM Tai Hao profile. Thanks for making this set a reality, Evangs.

Ah, that makes sense. I will try that. I will try using a dremel to cut the end of the wire instead of wire cutters.
My V80 developed chatter on the left arrow key a few months back. Since it was under warranty, I sent it back, and it took like six weeks to get back. Should've just ordered some Matias switches. Anyway, that's one reason I want to make sure these caps are removable. I don't plan on taking them off, but I may need to service the keyboard in the future.

Is that the TKL version of the Lambo case?
Finally finished my V80MTS: http://imgur.com/a/aydYf
Thanks Evangs for helping me out with my keycap troubles, and thanks for putting together such a damned good looking set! I love it.
So if I understand correctly if you buy Matias wires/stabilizer pack you don't have to do any wire surgery to get these to work?
Were international orders declared at full value and had an invoice inside? I just want to make sure I don't look like an idiot when I'll have to pick it up.Soooo, I'll probably have to go there today or tomorrow and it would be great if I knew what's the case.

Thanks for the info.
For future shipments to germany it would be great if you could include an invoice in the box or even better on the outside (in theses glue-on plastic bag thingies like switchtop does it).
Apparently they started caring about that a lot recently and I had to go to the customs office very often lately because of that.
If there is an invoice inside they sometimes open it and do the customs stuff right away so I can get it delivered and pay at the door, if not, I at least don't have to bring a physical copy of my PayPal confirmation.
If there is an invoice on the outside though it's basically guaranteed that they will do the customs stuff for me so I can get it delivered and pay at the door.
Just picked mine up from the customs office, apparently keycaps count as plastic parts and have to be taxed differently from keyboards which are free from extra taxes (other than VAT), this extra 40€ ($47 as of right now) kinda made this an insanely expensive keyset :(
Well, enough whining, I'm missing the 1.5u? "Disk" key, the one that's not crossed out here:Show Image(http://puu.sh/xdhNb/c4699616a3.png)
How would I go on about getting that (order #1907, btw)? Should I just shoot you an e-mail?
I'm not sure I understand the extra tax, is there anyway around it??
this key failed to be produced. The good news is that I have already contacted SP and they have produced that key and they are currently on the way to me. I will be shipping those out as soon as they arrive.
apparently keycaps count as plastic parts and have to be taxed differently from keyboards which are free from extra taxesdamn, that's bad news ... I still have a few keycap sets from MD in the cue.
if it's combined with other keyboard parts and not as an extra point on the invoiceso in the future the sender should include a cheap resistor or diode with the keycap set and state it as "kit of computer parts" on the invoice ;-)
I'm not sure I understand the extra tax, is there anyway around it??
There are two legal ways. Either if it's combined with other keyboard parts and not as an extra point on the invoice, or if it was under 150€ using the conversion rate at the day I picked it up (shipping counts towards the taxed price btw.), it was at ~151€ though, so I had top notch luck once again. (See my luck continuing on my BananaSplit tracking http://puu.sh/xdxOX/353024c2f4.png can't wait to see how that turns out)this key failed to be produced. Got it, thanks for the answer :thumb:

was the LightCycle-shipping a plastic bag, a paper bag or a real box ?
Seems like you should be taxed on only the amount over $150, not just when you pass that threshold.
i.e. you'd pay the tax on $1, not $151.
cardboard boxI believe customs assumes the choice of a cardboard box speaks for higher value item inside.
for anyone who ordered an Alps base set. I got the missing 1.5 disk keys from SP and have sent out to all but 9 orders which will be finished up tonight.

Out of curiosity, has anyone put LightCycle DSA onto a Filco Majestouch-2 full size keyboard?
If anyone has the ALPS set and can be willing to part with the numpad portion... please let me know!
I need it to build my roadkit!

I don't think I need mine. I'll check on it after work and message you.

Ah man I just committed to building an ALPS Neutrino. If anyone has an extra ALPs set they'd like to unload, let me know.

You might send a PM to Evangs. I believe he had ordered some extra ALPs sets in case anyone needed replacements. Since it's several months later, those may be up for grabs now. I could be entirely wrong though.
Might be of interest to people with the Alps version of these caps:
