warehouse visit - I love that this place exists in my backyard
« on: Fri, 20 February 2015, 01:21:42 »
Long-time lurker here....

4 years ago, I bought an IBM Model-M for ten bucks at an auction and I've been using it as my work keyboard every since.  Recently, I've gotten the urge to try something different.

Thanks to GH, I discovered that the office for MechanicalKeyboards.Com is a half-hour from my house (Nashville).  Today, I dropped by to take a look around.  I visited the amazing showroom and tested out dozens of different keyboards.  00zero spent lots of time talking to me about the business & science of keyboards.  Great guy--I learned a lot.  Super-patient too--not once did he roll his eyes at my dumb questions.  I eventually purchased a Full-Size KBTalKing One w/ Green switches that I think I'm really going to like.

As a first-time poster, I also wanted to give a big "thanks" to everyone in the geekhack community for educating me about mechanical keyboards.  I've learned a TON and love the site.  Looking forward to getting to know more people...

Yeah, that place is pretty cool and those guys are nice. We had a meetup there right before I moved and they gave us a tour and we talked for a LONG time. Very nice dude, that 00zero.

My tall friend who was there (he's not on GH) bought it from me before the move. I had to pay for the $$$$$$ move somehow. :(

I'm impressed you remember! Such a great board. Best switches I've ever had my hands on (don't tell my HHKB). Sorry I had to bail out on the TKL alu case. I wanted one of those so bad!

I kept thinking he was on GH, and was wondering what his screen name was. So, it makes sense that he is not on GH... :)

I deeply regret not visiting MK HQ the last couple times.  I've got some social anxiety issues with meeting new people. :(

I have that issue when even joining skype calls with new people, and I will make small talk at first, and it usually takes me about an hour to warm up to people, but my mindset is that they are only people on the internet, and if I feel uncomfortable, I can leave. With IRL, I have been voluntarily committed to doing stuff where I am very, very out of place, and to get through it all I think of is that in x hours, it will be long over.

hey join the club ;D

you should definitely go next time you have a chance.  it was nice meeting someone who shares my interest in mech keyboards...I learned a ton--they're great people.  I feel pretty lucky that a place like MK is located so close to me since it seems like kind of a niche market.

I've got some social anxiety issues with meeting new people. :(
I used to be really shy.  So shy that when I was in third grade, I'd actually hide under the bed when new people came over to visit!

Inside, I'm still shy, but here's what I use to overcome it.

First, I remember that I'm among friends I've just not met--everyone here loves the same thing I do.

Second, I remember that I get along with everyone online and enjoy the conversations, and that the conversations are only better in real life.

Third, I remember that if I want in on all this social goodness, I have to just have to get involved in a conversation that's already going on.

I've actually become pretty unbelievably social since my days of hiding under my bed.  And I find meeting forum people in real life is killer fun. :)  I hope some of this helps to encourage you to get out and meet people.  I'm sure if we met, I'd have a lot of fun talking keyboards with you.

I had no idea that we have a keyboard shop so close by.  The next time I'm in Nashville, I'm going to have to come by and check out the store. :)
