New board looking for suggestions.
« on: Mon, 21 August 2017, 13:14:10 »
Hi folks. Long time no see.

I've been away for a couple months and now is the time to make a new computer, and with a new computer comes a **NEW KEYBOARD** :)

Since i've been out i'm looking for recommendations. I'm looking for :

- TKL
- MX Brown or Clear available
- less than 200 USD
- ANSI Layout
- If possible, a trackpoint lmao
- stock PBT keycaps

- No backlight or RGB. (I know it can be turned off but i don't want to pay extra.)
- No macro keys (but programmable layer is fine)
- No clutter or fuss like media keys or the likes.

Let me hear what you recommend. Thanks!

The usuals: Ducky, Filco, Cooler Master, Varmilo and the whole shabang.

Personally, I vouch for Ducky One TKL.

The trackpoint you wont find sadly unless you go unicomp. if you want just simple and plain you can't go wrong with a Filco Majestouch.

TEX Yoda would be right up your alley if you're not hard set on a TKL board

Hands down the Leopold FC660M.  It's a 60% with arrows so maybe a 65 or 70 percent?  Far greatest out of the box quality, but I admit I have not tried Filco and Varmillo.  I'm sure many will second my recommendation.
KPB V60 Gateron Browns and Leopold Keycaps.  Poker 3 with Gateron Browns and Poker keycaps.  Poker 3 with Cherry MX Browns, ABS keycaps and white LED's.

Leopold FC660M- my new favorite, right out of the box.

Another vote for the Ducky One. The feature set is unmatched at anywhere near the price.

Thanks for the fast reply i'm looking into them right now.

EDIT :

Unicomp looks interesting, will keep in mind if i go buckling spring.
Tex YODA is cool but i already have poker 2, which is more of the same :/
Ducky has ABS keycap which i totally forgot about. I'd rather have PBT because they resist shine (or POM)

I'd like to ask jcoffin1981 if the Leopold Keyboard has ABS or PBT keycaps? If PBT i think the FC660M is a solid pick.

I think cooler master also uses ABS which drops it out of the list sadly :/

I don't know for Filco and Varmilo though.... :/

I have to agree for the ducky, the price is right.

It looks like a sturdy board and i really like the front facing legend.

Now i'm wondering in between the ducky or the Leopold but i can't find MX clears for the Leopold :/

Leopold and Varmilo give you stock PBT keycaps. You should check out the 1800 layout used by Leopold in some of their models. For me, it's much better than tenkeyless.

1800 Layout? Can you elaborate?

Also what are the differences in between the Leopold FC660M and Varmilo VA68M V2? Other than the two additional keys i see no difference. I read there was an issue with the paint on the FC660M?? Does anyone knows more about this?

Also from a price point perspective the Varmilo is about 60 USD (about 75CAD...) more expensive than the FC660M :/ What can justify this high price tag lmao?

I'm still considering the Ducky, but the FC660M has a much better sizing imo (My desk is an IKEA BRUSALI Corner desk; it's small so I gotta be very careful with the space)

Oh and both are a pain to find in MX Clear....... -_-

The 1800 layout is not very common and definitelly not as popular as tenkeyless. It was used by Cherry in some models and now Leopold has rescued it for their FC980 models. It allows boards almost of the same width than tenkeykess but offers the advantage of keeping the numpad as well as the cursor keys, sacrifying (or repositioning) the central block keys. I normally have the numpad with numlock off, so I'm used to using home, pgup, end and pgdown together with the cursor keys on the numpad, for moving and positioning the cursor on a text file, for instance. I also use the numpad (instead of wasd) for gaming. For me the only problem was the delete key, which was too far on the top row, so I moved it one row to the front, exchanging position with the numlock key.

An example:

Very nice to know. This board looks great!

But i really don't need the numpad lmao, i need to save space. :/

I want the arrow keys mostly because many games uses them still and it'll be a gaming desktop.

I like the FC660M mostly for it's FN layer; i'm very used to the FN layer since i have a Poker 2.

So yea i think i'll go with FC660M but i really need to decide in between brown or clear. Both are nowhere to be found anyway.

Hey, that's a good idea. It's not just closer, but much easier to hit on the corner of a group rather than just at the end of a row. It's some ergonomics thing, where it's easier to feel a larger total object. That's how I'm finding it, anyway.
