Can anyone recommend a palm rest for HHKB?
« on: Sun, 15 October 2017, 18:57:48 »
I'm looking for a palmrest, preferably available via Amazon that fits either exactly or very closely the Happy Hacking Keyboard. Any recommendations? I prefer either leather or padded cloth, but am open to suggestions.

I personally got one from amazon.jp along with the hhkb, it's the ARCHIS fat mousepad, the 65% one. It's very very soft foam but firm, it's cheaper than what I would get on amazon.ca or amazon.com. I would suggest the PC Master race wrist rests.

If you search Glorious Gaming Wrist Rest you should find it, if not get the Grifiti Wrist Rest. Should be similar, the Glorious one is just rounded while the Grifiti is rectangular.

Thanks. I actually found this one, which is almost exactly the same length as the HHKB: http://amzn.to/2xIp1JF

I'm going to give it a try.

The ones you mention all seem longer than the keyboard itself.

Yeah, the one you found might be higher than your HHKB though.

A) I had a HHKB and the Grifiti fit it perfectly: 14inch x 4 x .75.  After a month I returned the HHKB.  I got use to the layout quickly (best of all keyboards).  Problem was, they topre keys are too hard on your fingers.

B) I did not try the Glorious pad because many people complained about the edges being sloped.  That is a big problem when you're on a 60% board.

C) Wrist rests will destroy your hands and arms.  Until 2 months ago, I used keyboard wrist pads for the last 20 years.  Major mistake.  I thought I could not use keyboard without them.  You're not supposed to rest your wrists.  It causes big problems from your fingers and wrists, to you elbows and shoulders.  Unfortunately, companies make and sell them because they know the sheep will buy them.

D) The proper way to use a keyboard is by "floating" your hands over the keys and not resting them (wrists) on anything.  Yeah, I though "what the heck, how am I going to hover my hands above my keyboard for 8+ hours a day?"  That sounded to me like advice for someone using their keyboard a max of 20 minutes a day.

E) Problem solved... it took me only a few days to get used to these arm supports, now I can't imagine not using them:
Check out the Amazon reviews as well...

The US Government has a site that explain keyboard ergonomics, though I couldn't quickly find that link... here are a couple

I don't typically use a palm/wrist rest while actually typing, just between typing sentences, etc.

Personally, I cannot do the floating thing - it's too taxing and requires more concentration, and is probably aggravated with heavier switches. Maybe if you do it for a few weeks you'll get used to it - I never tried. I agree on not resting on your wrists though. Instead, I rest on my palms, which in turn rest on a thick Artisan XSoft mouse pad. Typically, I hold my arms at a 90 degree angle, tucked close to my body with the elbows sitting on the chair's armrests. The palms then sit near or at the edge of the table - on top of the mouse pad - which can also negate the sharp edge of the table (ideally, that should be rounded).

That method has eliminated all RSI issues I had and is very comfortable even for long sessions.

So I received this one yesterday and it's actually pretty good for the price. Fits the HHKB pretty well, and since it's a bit higher than most, if you want to, you can actually rest your palms on it while typing and it keeps your hands in a more proper angle while doing so.

Here's a pic:
