I'm not sure.

Maybe she needs some PDF-file, or so. Something which they can use to make the tool.

I don't know if they 'print' the tool,
or have some CNC-machine to have it made.

Pretty sure they use vector files. As many molding machines I've seen rely on them (took many tours around molding shops when I was younger).

I can lend a hand in producing the vector files if thats what they require.

We need to get this rolling! I swore I wouldn't buy keyboards this year.

But that didn't leave out keycaps!

Yup, Illustrator does vectoring. Resizing Photoshop images for use on printing keycaps sounds like a huge pain in the ass. I don't think converting to an .ai file would help.

thx ripster

Hey 7bit, can you contact them and ask what format/reso do they need the designs to be. Don't mind making the vectors, just want to know the requirements before I start.

Why most places(tshirt, molding shops, ect) request vector files (not only limited to .ai) because it makes resizing a breeze.

Is there a possibility for blue blanks? Since you already have the BLUEONWHITE, though I do realize that only covers partial keyboard.

I think that colours of the eyes on Ripster's red awesome key are the wrong way around. If you lose the border then you can reverse the colours.

I think another minor adjustment that should work is to get rid of the line around awesome's mouth and instead have a short line separating his tongue from his face. This helps keep the roof of his mouth in shadow.

I'd be interested to know what other people think.

One more question: will the blanks have the nubs for F/J keys on the home row?

Your design is much better than ripsters, so I enhanced your graphics and included them:

Awesome Face black on yellow

Awesome Face white on red

Measure Your Space Bar!!!

I thought about those nubbed keys a long while ago.

I think it would be best to include both.

Some touch typists love them, and some aesthetics fetishists (like me) hate them. Especially with blanks they look displaced.

But now to something very important:
Some time ago I requested the measures of certain space bars.

The space bars for Filco and recent Cherry G80-3000 keyboards are well known and included as the default space bar (fits both).

I measured the old-style space bar for Cherry keybaords without Windows keys myself. I'm pretty sure SP has the tools to make it.

The key-mount distances are 57mm and the overall width is 142mm.

If someone has got a different space bar and the abilities to measure it properly, I would much appreciate, if that one would share her/his knowledge with us.

So if I vote BLANK, it will include two extra keys in the home row, or will I need to specify which I want?

I find it funny that HD gets tagged at the end of so many things now. Just yesterday I saw that they released Uno HD for Windows Phone 7. How did we manage to get so far with Standard Definition Uno!?

I hear that it's actually almost getting that ridiculous with those guitar hero games where now they have a button for every chord/fret/whatever? Why not just play a real guitar ffs?

In the name of my litle perl-script I say thanks for your apreciation! You don't have to feel sorry about lots of changes. My little perl-script feels very bored with those few messages.

BTW:
It isn't harmful to add plain text, but somtimes my script fails:

results in:

just write

WASDWITHARROWSRED - 1
WASDWITHARROWSBLUE - 1
WASDWITHARROWSWHITE - 1

results in nothing, because of that dash.

For better understanding[1], here are the regular expressions,
to have one set:
^([[:alnum:]]+)([[:space:]]*)$

to have more than one set
^([[:alnum:]]*)([[:space:]]+)([[:digit:]]+)([[:space:]]*)$

I'm thinking the Awesome/Reddit/WingdingsKeyboard keys might look better in the Vintage Spherical Key format Signature uses for their novelty keys.

And I'm telling ya, once these are done and I post on Reddit I'd expect some serious volume if done right.   Be sure to reinforce to Signature that the design belongs to Geekhack - might as well send some profits iMav's way.

What about pad-printing a copyright notice at the front of those keys?

However, I think there will be no price difference between SA or DCS family.

On the other hand, if all keyas are from DCS family and that Awesome face is not, it might look queer.

The reason I mention the Novelty keys is they are considerably thicker and the graphic will be sharper because of the lack of texture.
...

Lack of texture could be applied to DCS keys as well.

I still wait for the list of modifier keys which could be done in SA-family.
Mrs. Signature told me the can't do all of them, but some. However, they can make all single sized keys of the SA-family.

Everybody listen now:

Some people want Leopold space bars.

If you are by any chance in possession of a Leopold space bar, please take your sharpest ruler out and measure the distances of key mounts and overall width of your space bar!

Please post your measures here, or send me a message, if you are too shy to post your measures in public.

Thank You!

PS: If you have got other space bars (for POS keyboards or such): just measure them and post results here as well!

The Leopold spacebars are symmetrical.

They are 118.00mm wide w/o flashing,
with flashing 118.10mm.

3 cherry compatible shafts total.
1x switch dead center 59.00mm (remember it's symmetrical).
2x cherry stabalizer shafts each 19.00mm dead center from the outside edge.
In other words the shaft centers are 40.00mm apart.

Done with calipers to machine tolerances by manufacturing knowledge.
.05mm practical tolerance, .10mm acceptable tolerance.

At least those are the measurements I used when I made them.

=)

Whoops! I just saw another one with some of my design notes, but I don't see any other ones, so they must be at the studio.

MX-11800 spacebar (Compaq, brown cherry one)

There apparently were some slight variances due to different demolding shrinkages but here is apparently what I had.

4 cherry compatible shafts, only 3 are used on any given compatible board.

-131.60mm length
-65.80mm dead center switch shaft (symmetrical)
-On the right hand side there is an extra off-center stabalizer shaft. It's center is 42.80mm to the right of the center shaft or 23.00mm from the right of the out-side edge.
-The 2 symmetrical stabalizers are 57.00mm from the middle of the center shaft.

In order to choose the colors for those extra keys, I need some good photos of those color samples from Signature Plastics, shot with a decent camera[1].

I need the pictures along with the color codes. Don't photograph every shade of every color.

It is sufficient to have some of them:
Some light blue as shown in the layout samples, something more dark blue[2], bloody red, apple exteded yellow, and death white.

Thank you!

Found these in the round two thread:
I don't know if any of these guys can get what you need, Fwiffo did say he'd have to borrow a camera.

Thanks for digging those out!

I like this Red and Yellow.
[IMAGE OF A RED ESC, YELLOW SMILEY AND A BLACK FLAME KEY]

I like the red too! So it's settled.

I will tell her, we want that Red Escape red. Just have to make sure they didn't change the red in the menatime.

The yellow looks dirty to me. Did the key come like this out of production?

Anyway, if you want your damn dirty yellow, you should have it.

Anyone in for the flame key? (given it is not copyrighted by someone)

Now, we just have to decide what Kind of Blue we need ...

Is there a ducky function media key option ?

Example the F1-F7 in addition have icons for media shortcuts when pressed simultaneously with the FN key.

I posted a screenshot example in my review

Here's a reference blue from their novelty set.

Thank you for cleaning the yellow key!

Is it the same orange as in Round 1? (its darker, right?)

And how do I ask Mrs Signature, that I want the blue to be the same as on that "Oh S([hi]{2})t" key?

I'm not sure if they have those symbols in stock. Would be easier to do these in text:

F1 LOUD
F2 LOUDER
F3 LOUDEST
F4 PLAY/PAUSE
F5 STOP
F6 PREV TRACK
F7 NEXT TRACK

Otherwise, take 25 sets and pay 3.85 per key.

In the function kit exist already keys for that purpose:
VOLUME UP, VOLUME DOWN, MUTE, NEXT, PREV, STOP, PLAY etc.

PAUSE is part of the standard kit.
