I'll build 5 of these if people don't want to do themselves - will be $25 per board which I will donate 100% of.

note that margo is in the EU

I will offer the same in the US.  Located fairly central in Iowa.  I would like to note this would just be the physical assembly.  I don't have enough experience in the software side to feel comfortable doing firmware.

Also, for additional donations to the NJW foundation, please hold onto your money for now. I am still waiting to hear back from Largefry re: the status of the trust. Ideally, it's best if additional donations go directly to him. However, if you donate to geekhack via the donation buttons anywhere on this site and put "please donate this directly to the NJW foundation" or anything to that effect, I will make sure that the money gets to the NJW foundation.

I contacted him as well. I won't be getting in on this buy since I've had bits and pieces of the board for a while but I'd still like to donate.

I will provide a "default" firmware so that everyone can program their Teensys. Also, I believe metalliqaz' Easy AVR firmware will work with these. Either way, all you have to do to load the firmware onto the Teensy is to use PJRC's excellent Teensy Loader software.

I have to say, I'm kind of shocked. If orders come in at the current rate, we will be out of units by this weekend.

At this point, I'm optimizing the total available units by my ability to keep my own sanity.

However, if we're almost sold out by Thursday, when the material order goes in, I guess I'll have to buy more? Again, shocked.

By my current estimates, as of right now, there are 43 more units available. Have at it, I guess :)

I already asked Thechemist to assemble mine, but since he is in the US it might make more sense to ask you.

How would it work? What's the total costs? 25$ for assembly + switches?

How do I order a kit so you will get it?

Would it be possible to buy just the PCB? $159 is bit pricy for me right now (especially since that is before controller, switches, and caps), and I'm kinda wanting to make a things a bit different anyway (want to make a clamshell tablet case with a keyboard built in).

Just a PCB won't be much use unless you get a plate machined yourself

Not to mention that's going to be one THICK tablet case. The minimum distance between the bottom of the top plate and the top of the bottom (plate, housing, whatever) is 0.5 inches (12mm). Because the Teensy sticks off the back of the PCB, and has a USB connector there.

mkawa is working on getting plate mounted stabs for geekhackers.org

Apart from that, whiskeytango was selling used ones from wyse boards, but he locked that thread

My source is scavenged from old boards

And I do belive that if you clip the ends of a PCB mount it will fit

Nope. They don't have the notch that mounts to the plate. :(

Just bought one. Can you combind it with the shipment to TheChemist to save on shipping costs? And did you say before that you would offer a discount for people who bought them so you didn't have to send them a new notched and unotched plate?

Getting a plate to spec wouldn't be an issue. Plus if I am having stuff made for the rest of the case, it is nothing more to add on a plate. Plus I'd like stainless steel, so I could polish it up. Thickness isn't really much of a concern. I wager it'd be a bit over an inch thick all said and done, but not a biggie. Some of the things I carry are that sized anyway. Still way more portable than a 15" laptop, and all the gear that needs.

Any chance I could just get a Ti bottom plate?
I have a constructed JD40 and cutout top plate.
there's going to be a limited number of bottom plate-only kits, and priority will go to the people who had notched ti top plates cut. the last few cuts are in flux though, so i'm not exactly sure how many extra bottom plate units there will be.

I got one of those notched top plates. Shouldn't be an issue, then?
Possible to get it without the PCB, too? Should I use the order form in the OP?

If I could get a bottom Ti plate set, I could sell you my extra pcb [I already have a constructed jd40]
mkawa please respond on how I order this [sorry if I missed it before. It's late and I don't want to miss this  buy]

if there are extra bottom plates after all the gb orders are sent out, i'll vend the parts separately. we're still talking about PCBs. for partial kits where you haven't purchased a notched plate already, best to wait until after the gb.

state of the GB: currently at 40 orders, which is about 3 full sheets, and orders seem to have calmed down since the weekend. i will be going through the orders tomorrow to give partial refunds to people who ordered both a notched plate and a kit.

I purchased a notched plate.
What is my next course of action.
Judging by your above post I should place an order for a full kit and await a refund?

edit: i don't have the money to order one of these now. but i dont want to miss out on a ti bottom plate.
I can borrow money or something to get one of these NOW if that's the only way to 100% make sure I get one.
Else I'll wait until after and just get a bottom plate or bottomplate/pcb kit.

I have access to a laser engraver, but I've never engraved on titanium. So I have no idea of the quality of the result. You can see how it looks on stainless steel here:

I don't mind engraving a logo and/or  [number] of [total] on them, if it looks good on titanium. But shipping across the country and back would definitely increase the cost per unit.

That badge is beautiful! I personally wouldn't mind chipping in some more (if your laser cutter can cut Ti) to make this SmallFry board even more special, to commemorate Nathan Walker.

I am offering FREE assembly service for the first 5 4 3 2 individuals ( just post in the thread ) that perhaps don't have any soldering equipment but would still want to purchase this keyboard.

I would prefer it to be in the USA, all I ask is for you to pay the shipping.

If you are happy with the assembly and want to send any money for the service please message Mkawa so that he can get the money to Smallfry's family.

I know a few others have also chimed in already, but I'd like to add my services to the mix.  I will assemble up to 5 of these completely free of charge as well.  It seems like this might not be needed, but oh well.  The option is there.  :)

If it came as a badge, like the one pictured above, people could have the option of using it or not.

I should stop skim reading. I would like this as a badge, it appeals to me in this form :).

Would prefer the back plain, sorry.

I can understand the appeal and design wise it looks good, but it's not for me.

same here.  i would really rather just get it into my hands asap as well.

Purchased the Ti back plate. Thank you.
I would love a badge I could optionally attach to my case.
