Leopold has announced (http://www.leopold.co.kr/?doc=bbs/gnuboard.php&bo_table=notice&sselect=&stext=&ssort=&sorder=&wr_id=295&page=) a new series of MX and Topre keyboards, the FC980M and FC980C, respectively. Both seem to be based on the 1800 style layout (compact with number pad).Show Image(http://www.leopold.co.kr/data/cheditor/1609/fc980_image_1_710.jpg)
The press release is in Korean, for a rough google translation, click More:
Oh man that is some work keyboard hotness. I wish we could petition for a 55g option
I think there's something wrong with Google Translate. It should be October for Cherry MX variant and November for Topre variant

does it look better now? (http://www.kbdmania.net/xe/files/attach/images/60/512/237/009/bd96a9e21a2e93381e87d561e1364e12.jpg)
;)
Just noticed there is no height difference on the topre version as there is for the cherry one at images on the OP.Isn't that usually the case with Topre?
Does this means that it's going to be flat profiled?

I'm sure I'll have a constant urge to rip that sticker, and then after I do I will always feel something is missing.

Looks like the numpad is flat profile, but the rest is sculptedNumpad looks sculpted... Not sure I follow on this one.
Hard to tell from the picture. If it means anything the hipro has a uniform numpad. The regular height full size topre boards are sculpted though, so I'm going to bet that it'll be sculpted for this board.Looks like the numpad is flat profile, but the rest is sculptedNumpad looks sculpted... Funny enough, one of the founders of /r/MK already has an FC980M in-hand.

If Leopold had a TKL Topre, I'd jump on it immediately.

Hey, Realforce already makes all sorts of TKLs both Variable, 45g and 55g's.
Stop pushing something that is so widely available already sunshine, this FC980M/FC980C layout is UNIQUE hence it stays as is, if you want anything in a TKL layout look elsewhere.

I have those RealForce keyboards already, and no, they don't feel like my Leopole FC660C. There's something special about the combination of FC660C's 45g weighting and the keycaps. It feels heavier than RealForce's 45g, but slightly lighter than RealForce's 55g, and the keycap has this almost wood material quality in the way it feels when making contact with the case. Also, the color palette the beige/dark gray is uniquely differently from any other Topre keyboard makers. I would love to see the FC660C as a TKL, and I would buy it in a heartbeat and sell my 55g RealForce (although I'd keep my ergonomic weighted/silenced RealForce).

No Rowds, you just keep buying More and MORE of the FC980s. You just don't stop until they stop manufacturing them at their facility.
When these 1800 series start selling, I'm stock piling them till the day I die, that is what is meant by being devoted to this type of keyboard 8) .
Is there any indication these will be made with 55g domes? Im used to 75g switches right now, so 45 would be a steep drop.
Here's hoping that someone makes an Alu. case for this like the FC660M
Indeed an MX Clear version would be nice, an MX Tactile Grey version and I would take that as a divine sign and let go off my 60% obsession
This looks so nice , I hard silent MX red types best
Hi, I've received my FC980M and super-incredibly satisfied with its built.
Just like the FC980 it is sturdy yet compact for a daily use at home.
Too bad the DSA Dolch did not have the 1u size of "ALT". Thus, I'm using a spare blank keycap to get a hold for a while.
When's FC980C going to be released?Same :(
Wow! So soon!
Looks great
How does the stabilised keys feel?
Space/Enter etc.

The original keys feels and "tasted" just like the previous Leopold I owned. Solid and thick PBT keycaps. If you have known the Vortex PBT keycap, they feel similar but Vortex still prevail. When's FC980C going to be released?Same :(
I've bought it recently from the PC Gear in Seoul. Mr. Park (the owner) informed that the availibility of FC980C will be ready in Korea around early of November. Even not all of the FC980M was ready at his store. The Black-case with Navy keycaps will just arrive sometimes between 10-15 October 2016.Hi, I've received my FC980M and super-incredibly satisfied with its built.

It looks like the FC980M's stock caps come with stepped Caps Lock, and a stepped Ctrl to swap into that spot, only? Horrid.
The stepped Caps Lock is visible in many sites' product photos, and demo typing videos on YouTube. And there's a closeup of the replacement Ctrl here:

Yes, a lot of buyers are going to swap out the stock caps, but it's just annoying, what if I prefer the feel of the stock caps on the outer keys? So frustrating. In every other way this board is exactly what I've been looking for.

When does the FC980Ti come out?
I messaged Widebasket on eBay and he said he would have the topre variant sometime in November, but wouldn't give me pricing info. I hope mechanicalkeyboards.com gets these eventually since I'm sure getting them from him won't be cheap.
When does the FC980Ti come out?

First grab a M to try out the Silent Reds and then grab a C later because it's the first Topre board in that layout.
Get a C, Cherry is out of style
Man, I wish I liked Cherry switches more. I tried the MX Silents on the Strafe board that came out last year and was really unimpressed.

When? Next month? April? Nobody seems to know.

Theoretically, sometime in November.
Another unrelated question: Is shapeways the only way to get loose mxtopper sliders now? Doesn't look like the jt ones are available anywhere and I don't want to disassemble another 2 novatouch.

I don't get what your complaint is, I guess you don't like Stepped keycaps? - but you would like to use the default caps?
I think a more severe concern is the steppedness of that stepped keycap, it doesn't look standard, I'm guessing, with their history with non-standard stuff, Leopold must-have made it a standard capslock slot, but with a non-standard custom keycap
Show Image(https://i2.kknews.cc/large/e910005ca56f06f6ace)
Based on this, I believe the switch is in the standard (non-stepped) capslock location. A stepped caps lock should be to the left of the tab switch as depicted below.Show Image(http://park10.wakwak.com/~jpspace/key/picture/g81/DSC01724.jpg)
Mmmmm. It's not exactly a 1800 layout. I didn't notice it before... Look at all those keys missing on the top of the numpad. And pgup pgdown placed on the same row... No, thanks.

Just personal preference. Not a fan of linear switches, and ergo clears are awesome. I got a MX silent board because I think it'd be easier to get rid of these switches later on, compared to blues/reds/browns etc.
Side note: the grey cherry stabilizers aren't pre-clipped/lubed like how Ducky's newer red ones are. They don't really feel mushy though compared to the clipped stabs on my other boards.
I'm having a pretty big problem, just got a FC980M, and it just doesn't want to register on my computer. I'm pretty new to mechanical keyboards, but when I have all the switches on the back turned to off, the caps lock and num lock lights just flash, but it doesn't register any keystrokes. When any of the switches are on, no lights, no registration, please help!!
Try it on another computer.
Ah, I bought it from MK.com, the usb plug they sent was DOA, I cut down an old PS3 cable to get it working, thanks for the help!

Yes. but except for bottom modifier keys and right shiftbar.
space bar is the same size as realforce.
For anyone that has experience with Topre to MX adapters, will doing so work on the 980C? I imagine it will be just fine for everything except the stabilizers, as I'm not sure how they mount. I don't have any Topre boards, so I don't know how to anticipate this. I would really like to put my GMK Carbon on my eventual 980C, whenever it hits US shores!
So far I've found these adapters: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Topre-to-MX-adapter-Topre-change-into-MX-switch/32748140639.html?shortkey=zAVzaARz&addresstype=600&detailNewVersion=&categoryId=70802
(If there are better ones out there, please let me know!)
I swore I'd never buy another keyboard other than hhkb. That white and grey topre 1800-ish layout, though...
Looks sexy, but if it feels like the FC660C, it will be awful.

No. 980C feels somewhere between HHKB and Realforce, much lighter than FC660C.
Perhaps it's the difference between a topre keyboard produced in Japan and China.
For anyone interested, the pre-orders are up!

I should have waited a few weeks. I ordered through Easybuy7 and ended up paying $275.48 total, shipping included.

I am assuming the Dark Gray is their "Black." At least I hope so, because I ordered one!
I've only seen the two models out there, so I think that's the one.

Good point. I wish they had product photos up to make this all easier.
From what I can tell, the front-printed white and black are MX versions and the other two are their Topre counterparts.
I am under the impression those top two are the only two 980C versions available. So white would have to be the one with the gray mods, and dark gray would have the be the other black...ish.... one if any of this makes sense.
In any case, the official word on it will be appreciated!
Looks promising.
Any chances we will see them with an ISO-Ger Layout/Keycaps?
Well, for better or worse, it's now available on widebasket's ebay store:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leopold-FC980C-Electrostatic-Capacitive-Switch-Keyboard-Dye-Sublimated-White-PBT-/282270034728 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leopold-FC980C-Electrostatic-Capacitive-Switch-Keyboard-Dye-Sublimated-White-PBT-/282270034728)
I am sorely tempted, however he's charging shipping on this model when he usually offers free shipping, possibly because he knows there will be some pent up demand for it. So that extra $$ makes me want to wait.

So the 980C does not have media controls? That's disappointing.
Can anyone please confirm?
Much appreciated.

that is correct. no media controls on the 980c.
unless I have no idea what I'm doing.
Mine arrived today. I swapped out some keycaps to give it a bit of interesting contrast.

It's the Topre. Is it genuine Topre?

Designed by Leopold, manufactured in China (everything points towards Varmilo factory), inspected in Japan (likely by Topre) — some of this is visibly printed on the FC660C packaging. From the start of the FC660C project, it has been very important to Leopold to really impress Topre with the quality of this product. No corners were cut, no expense spared to build a keyboard that's on par with Topre keyboard products, and in many ways that was successfully (over)achieved.

It's hard to get used to the placement of the delete and navigation keys though, since my muscle memory is based on TKL layout.

Guys
Does Leopold provide alternative key caps so the user can switch Caps Lock and Control?
Can anyone please let me know?
Thanks.

They do for the 980m. No idea about the c.
GuysMine didn't include any extra keycaps--not CTRL or CapsLock, or the bonus WASD colored ones. The only extra included in the package was a wire keycap puller with red handle.

What are your thoughts on the placement of the FN key and its key-combo partners? At first glance, it seems like using "FN + Arrow Keys" or any of the other combinations might be a bit awkward, which is the only thing holding me back from buying this right now.
Can anyone compare this to the RealForce TKL? Or NovaTouch? (in terms of feel and build quality)

I'm way too lazy to google, can somebody who own's one of these can you give me a rough footprint on desk size? freedom units preferred but i'll take the other if that's all you got. :D
Truth is, if Leopold had a TKL version of their Topre keyboard, I'd have gotten that instead, but who knows if that'll ever happen, so I jumped on this just in case they'll never release a TKL version. Thanks for taking the time to type up such a detailed reply! It was very helpful. :)
Is there a technical limitation of some sort that made Leopold discard the media functions on their topre switch boards? The 980M seems to have them and I wish that the 980C would have them as well. Then for me it would make a great addition to my lovely 750R and 900R.
Sorry if this was said somewhere or should be obvious - but can someone please give me an idea of what sort of keycap profile the FC980C has?
It's a dayum shame that Leopold/Topre keyboards don't have media functionality. That black 980c tho :o

Real MEN don't need media keys because the PC only plays and stops when he tells it too 8) .
Up/dn is PgUp/PgDn and left/right is home/end.
What del key are you using, the one that is on the printscreen position or the one on the bottom of the numpad? Both are far from where the del key should be, but I'm trying to get used to any of the new positions.

I haven't received mine yet but is there a way to swap the numlock and delete key? That would definitely complete this layout.
Do you know what's the purpose of the FN combination that allows to choose between n-key rollover and 6-key roll-over? If I plug my keyboard via usb, it's already limited to 6-key, right? And if I'm using PS2, why would I want to limit it to 6-key?There's some weird work around for usb but yeah it should be limited to 6kro. Some BIOSes have issues with nkro and won't boot so that's why that's there.
And what about the F1, F2, F3, F4? I've read that's for controlling key repetition. Isn't that already set up by Windows under the keyboard configuration panel?
I'm waiting for a ANSI FC980M with browns in stock. However, I'm also considering the FC980C, despite its price, because I'd really like to try Topres and have one model with Topres for home and one with MXs for work. The only thing that prevents me from placing my order is the ABS spacebar. Do you know if the black PBT spacebar that is sold by http://www.keyboardco.com matches the original color?

without the horrid HHKB layout ;DGirl bye
The Fn + arrow cluster is actually nice for pg up/dn & home / end. Once you remember it's there, it's pretty easy to get used to.I totally overlooked that for a while but got used to having home and end on the top row on the right side.
Lovin' it so far.
Thock Thock Thock
It's almost like Leopold knew I was a mathematician (if you seen some of my posts on GH you'll know that I can pretty much break anything down to an algorithmic level :)) )
digi trade me caps you know you want a storm trooper look :spam:
Anyone know if the 980C has a standard lower row?Depends on what you call standard.
Has anyone taken their FC980C apart?
I have a feeling it will similar to the FC660C
Thinking about installing some Hyper rings and MX sliders...
