I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
Based strictly on exchange rate, with a little effort, you should be able to get a decent 8gb I5 model for about 250nzd and a 16gb model for about 400nzd but that's just based on exchange rate which doesn't always reflect local market pricing. Also you may need to pay a bit more to feel comfortable with a seller or get a nicer one so that price might be pretty good for your market.
Just look around, you should be able to get a pretty good idea of going rates (also make sure it comes with the charger).

Sounds like you just need something solid for uni and work. In that budget, a used ThinkPad or Dell XPS could be a great fit reliable, upgradeable, and not overkill on the GPU side

Dell XPS!

Dell XPS look nice and check all of the boxes, they have for a long time, strong, reliable, but they've also been the buggiest laptops I've ever dealt with. Nice laptops, just not something I can rely on, research your intended model for bugs before you buy as some are pretty bad.
No brand is perfect, I also don't recommend slim-lid touchscreen Lenovos (Idea Pad mostly), them, HP and Dell all have had issues with the glued hinges coming off the lid and breaking/shattering the screen. Not cheap or fast to repair (parts are often difficult to get) and many shops will refuse to even work on them because of this, cost/value and the fact that they can't warranty the work.
Insanto:
Used Thinkpads have to be the best choice. Theyre cheap, built like bricks and i wish i had a third argument ;D
