How do you store your keycaps?
« on: Fri, 02 August 2013, 14:15:51 »
i'm looking for a way to store my keycaps thats not plastic bags. I'd ideally like to store them in a way that is visually appealing. I thought about the modular display kit at SP, but at 32 bucks for 96, thats a bit expensive. What do people use?

additionally, where can one find the "Base 89" chart that i see around occasionally?

I use this method with a box that's shown on the first page. There's the Redline GB for cardboard keycap boxes. The sheet you're referring to can be bought on TechKeys.us or printed yourself. Forget where that file is hosted. There's other threads about this too but I can't seem to find them.

6 small snack bags inside of one larger sandwich bag. The smaller bags hold each row and the larger bag keeps the entire set together

I don't have any extra capss at the moment, but I'll probably just use some of those generic plastic tackle boxes with the adjustable dividers. I already have a bunch of them. You can usually pick them up for a buck or two.

Custom kaycaps has some holders for sell. Personally, I would just use a plastic bag, but if you really wanna be snazzy, here they are.

Thanks for all the replies. CPTBadAss's link led me to the container store, where i found a pretty good solution.

http://www.containerstore.com/shop/collections/photoStorage?productId=10025078&green=643E4E1A-CEC1-514E-0BFC-940EDB548BCC

It comes with 12 cases, and one case will hold all but the largest sets. The orange set below is a full wasd set. The only sets i have that wouldn't fit in there were the realforce topre sets. Most of the sets i buy though are TKL, so that works fine for me.

Or ... just buy moar keyboards to store your extra keycaps.

Of course you'd have to take the keycaps off the new boards to put your old keycaps on.

Then find somewhere to store the keycaps you just removed.

Now go back to the start of this post.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I throw them all in a medium-sized cardboard box that's in my closet. Just a jumbled mess of plastic. It's cool when you find a clack or something you didn't know you had though.

I wish I could find a Clack I didn't know I had.  I only have two, and I know I have both of those.

Is there a UK equivalent of the Container Store site? I need to find some boxes for my currently small but soon to be growing collection.
