Sorry son, you can't go to college, but if you're good I'll let you use my custom keyboard ;)Son: "Daddy, can I have my own custom keyboard?"
At least you've got your priorities straight :))With hobby comes responsibility! Hahaha
Bob has a pretty exciting life. Makes me want a novelty cap companion for some photobombing as well.
It looks really good! Great choice of parts, looking forward to how this turns out! Thanks! All I need now is to design some housing that will be compatible with the stock plate. ;D
Beautiful! Definitely proud ;D Now just make sure to not use alcohol when cleaning the plate in the future. Thanks! Actually I used alcohol to clean the plate before painting...AND in between paint layers... :( oops
Before painting and between layers is okay :). I meant now that its finished, don't clean it with alcohol--it will dull the finish.
Great idea with the tape under the plate--I'll try that too once I figure out where to get it :)
The board is looking sooooooo nice man, great job! I wish mine keyboard looked like this hahaha :DThanks! :D With time and hard work, you too can mod your own keyboard! But seriously...desoldering the switches and LEDs takes A LOT more time than soldering them back hehe
Very nice pics and awesome job!! From a fellow shine 2 owner. Thanks Ray! Not a pro but I try my best to get the right shots. :))
Looks really goood :thumb:Thanks BakaPhoenix! Good idea! :thumb: I think I'll order a full set of clear keycaps from Signature Plastics in November while they have that shipping promo. If it doesn't look good on the Shine 2 then I'll put in on my QFR at work...that'll ensure no one ever borrows my keyboard again haha!
The clear top of the switches is really nice, too bad you can see them since are hidden from the keycaps XD
Now what are you going to do with the top, if anything? :)
Can you take a picture of the keyboard in the dark? I want to see how much light the silver plate reflects. Looks pretty awesome!
Now what are you going to do with the top, if anything? :)
You're temping him!!!
I think it's good as is, because the plate and LEDs are already flashy enough. More like I'm curious if there are further plans :). The paintaholic and modaholic in me wants more!Haha...I have to admit that when I reassembled everything I was a bit disappointed that it still looked the same...a plain jane lookin' Shine 2 hiding all its internal mods.
As requested. :cool:Can you take a picture of the keyboard in the dark? I want to see how much light the silver plate reflects. Looks pretty awesome!
No problem...I'll do that later and post pictures.
I don't think the plastic will survive an oven heating session. For automotive urethane paints, Id strongly recommend that you have a professional do those, unless you want to invest in a lot of protective equipment, like a chemical filtering mask, full body suit, good ventilation. This is why I stick with oil enamels.Just went over the cerakote documentation and it just might work. The cure table lists plastics and polymers for 2 hours at 150-180 deg F and ABS melts at 221 deg F. BUT I need to get a professional opinion from the gun smith that does the application...and see what color options are available.

Woah, that looks amazing! The silver plate relfects some light too. Awesome! Thanks for taking the picture :).
That looks beautiful. Are you going to paint the casing as well? :thumb: Was that how the original lighting brightness was? Thanks! ;D Yes, I will paint the case. I was going to try some True Metallics Plasti Dip (Anthracite Grey (https://www.dipyourcar.com/plasti-dip-anthracite-grey-can.html) and Aluminum Silver (https://www.dipyourcar.com/plasti-dip-aluminum-can.html)) but the supplier is closed on account of the super typhoon here. I'll probably get the plasti dip next week.
for the plates, must you remove the original black paint first before spraying it with a new paint? if you didn't remove the original paint and you spray the new coat of paint over it, what would be the problem?
dun think i can afford to sandblast it, what about using sandpaper if removing the original paint is a must?
i own a ducky shine 2 too and i'm interested in painting the plate to make the LED light more reflective.

Sorry but I'm not sure about painting over the original paint/coating. :( Check out Photoelectric's Keyboard Case Painting Tips (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44191). He's the resident paintaholic so he would be in a better position to answer you. ;D
Anyway, when I consulted with Photoelectric (http://geekhack.org/index.php?action=profile;u=27585) regarding this project, he mentioned that he sanded down the powder coating on a Filco plate and then applied adhesion promoter before painting the plate. More info and pics in this post (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44191.msg979482;topicseen#msg979482).
I couldn't find adhesion promoter locally so I went with Rust-oleum Universal (Paint & Primer in One) in Titanium Silver (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Universal-11-oz-All-Surface-Metallic-Titanium-Silver-Spray-Paint-and-Primer-in-One-261400/202895261).
You can spray right over powder coating of you're going to use an opaque color. Just clean / degrease Really well before painting. Sand the surface very lightly to give it some porousness for new paint to adhere to.
Thank you so much for your knowledgeable input and pointers! :thumb:
Firstly, I need to do more homework and research about paints and stuff, which is what I'm doing now.
Secondly I'll need to find the time to desolder all those switches and LEDs from the board.
I haven't removed Cherry stabilizers before, are they difficult to remove?
When you do disassemble your Shine2, take some reference pictures to aide in reassembly. ;)
The plate mount cherry stabilizers are easy to remove.
First, remove the LED and switch.
If the switch was in place, you will not be able to remove the stabilizer and the stabilizer bar. See picture below:Show Image(http://imageshack.us/a/img716/7987/z2qr.jpg)
Second, lift the stabilizers from the area encircled in red. It will lift upward and then towards you.Show Image(http://imageshack.us/a/img39/9210/ip1z.jpg)
Hope this helps. :)
definitely taking pictures before taking them out apart!
i was under the impression that in order to take out the cherry stabs, you first need to desolder EVERYTHING, am i right or am i wrong?
i hope i'm wrong!
Finally got the Plasti Dip!

I was considering buying some to do a carbon fiberish paint job.
Have you seen this?
That came out well! :thumb: Though unsurprisingly, since Bob supervised. Let us know how the texture feels when it's dry :)
Perfect!Almost! I tried pulling of some keys in the F row and there are small nicks where the wire keycap puller made contact with the case :'( It's behind the keycap so out of sight out of mind. :))

How is the PlastiDip holding up? I'm afraid I might scratch it and then peel off the layer.
Here's the video to the scratch test on 4 layers of plasti dip on a QFR case that I let dry for about a week:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20523800/Scratch%20TestTest.MOV
I needed to redo the QFR case anyway since the scratches that I thought would be covered up by the plasti dip didn't get filled in. :'(
Anyway, regarding the scratch resistance...I should have waited longer between coats...the can instructs to wait 4 hours between coats. :-[
The Shine 2 case is doing fine with about 5-6 hours use daily...haven't tried a scratch test though :))

wow, i guess i couldn't bring my ducky along with me in my laptop bag after painting the case with plastidip :eek:Man...I was really expecting this to be more durable...but I think I didn't dip it right. I'll do more testing over the holiday break. :)
Wow, thanks for the video! You're welcome!
It looks pretty good still! The videos I saw on YouTube with PlastiDip on cars peeled off so easily.
Good job still!
Really Sweet Board! You inspired me and I am going to get the same Grey Keycaps! Thanks! You won't be disappointed with the grey caps! :thumb:
Aw :( That's what I was worried about. On the plus side, apparently you can peel it all off if you do a thick overall layer, and you can always do enamel later. Silver metallics are generally fairly easy to work with (unless you get unlucky and get paint that takes forever to dry, but can always test on small samples).
The Plasti-Dip is not a very durable finish i don't think it was intended to be. Most rubberized coating will peel from nicks or wear, like CoolerMaster uses on QFR's. If you want durability you will have to use a "real paint". I have found the Rustolem Universal line of paint is easy to use and adheres well, its a one step paint + primer. I have had very good results with it and seems very durable and if you like silver the Satin Nickel looks like anodized alum. I have done a lot painting using Rustolem paints for keyboards and been very happy with the results.
:( Thanks for the tests! It's useful to know the results. I do wonder if Plasti-Dip had a hard time adhering to the plastic on the case without some sort of a primer too. That could have eased the flaking. Going to add a link to your thread in my painting tips collection: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44191.0 :) If you'd like to add some details, it'd be great!
Hrm, maybe just your painting process, how thick of a layer you had made, and some description of durability over time. Thank you :). I see PlastiDip recommended periodically as the easy solution, but I had a feeling it would not be a lasting one. Can always sand and re-spray enamel after a year or two if needed, or to change color.
Beautiful!!!
I clipped the stabilizers on the Shine 2. They feel different in a good way.
I'll go clip the stabilizers on my QFR as well. :))

QFR uses Costar stabilizers :) Unless you've modded it.

Of course it's modded hehe :p
Funny story actually...I bought the custom plate before I had a QFR then ran into problems sourcing a QFR and somehow ended up with 2 QFRs haha :)) :))

Keyboards are a drug and an addition I tell ya! ;D
I'm just now reading this thread, but thank you for all the details you've provided of your process. This is a HUGE help for those of us just getting into modding their cases and see the pros and cons of plasti-dip.
Can't wait to see what you do next!
So pro.
