20th century Logitech Trackball case plastics question
« on: Sat, 11 December 2021, 10:01:42 »
Does anyone know the exact type of plastic Logitech used for the case plastics for the Trackman Marble line they manufactured from 1995 (e.g. the T-CH11) to 1998 (e.g. the T-CL13)?

There was a lot fewer plastic options then than there are now, at least common ones.
I'd give it 99% it's just ABS.

Keep in mind just because it's ABS doesn't mean all ABS is the same, some has fireproofing chemicals, some may have UV protection... So even ABS isn't always just ABS but ABS was and still is one of, if not the most prevalent injection molded plastics used in consumer products.

Yes, and these are exactly the sort of nuances I had hoped my question would help bring to the forefront.  I was asking about case materials because I would like to attempt a repair on an old Logitech trackball and knowing exactly what I am faced with would go a long way toward helping me do a proper job.

(Modern adhesives being what they are, my guess is I will only have one chance to get it right.)

With any luck, someone will see this thread and chime in to solve the mystery.  Until then, I had better come up with another, broader question before this particular project stalls and ends up in the "Real Soon Now" pile along with so many others.

Meanwhile, thank you for having a go at an answer.  I suppose the real problem is that it has yet to sink into my tiny little mind that people who crankily insist on messing about with trackballs two and one-half decades old are decidedly in the minority.

The problem is no one can really tell you what formula they used.
Even when companies did tell you what it is with codes it's rather crude, mostly just if it's fiber reinforced or not, they won't tell you if it has fire retardant or anything else.

Even if you do know, some of the chemicals will have leached but I doubt it would matter.
I'll add some options in your other thread though.
