Ducky Shine 3 YOTS Review
« on: Fri, 27 September 2013, 12:13:19 »
WARNING: first time reviewer, so beware as this might potentially not good for your health.

overall look, in person the aluminium top cover has slight hint of yellowish

red switch

Packaging and accessories
The packaging is nothing special, just what you expected from mechanical keyboard.
Things that are included in the box are also the usual affair (except for the alternative spacebar):
-   The keyboard itself, obviously
-   Dust cover
-   Keycap puller
-   Extra red WASD keycaps
-   User manual
-   Warranty card
-   And alternative space bar

the included accessories

compare to shine2 box

inside of the box

Features
Well I don’t think I need to list all the features because you can google it yourself.

First impression
Knowing the top frame is aluminum made me disappointed when I first picked up the keyboard.
I expected much heavier than my first ducky keyboard, ducky shine2. But I grinned and
whispered “awesome” to myself as soon as I opened the box. Yes, the first met up with the
real keyboard was really something. It was much more substantial than the first time I
opened my ducky shine2 box.

Typing
Immediately it was apparent this keyboard is really smooth, smoother than both red switch
Filco majestouch2 and poker2. Especially the spacebar feels really smooth compare to both
filco and poker2. No squeaky, no ping, no nothing, just the bottom up keycap sound. Maybe
they really have improved the cherry stabs or maybe their QC is really good, I don’t know.
But I am really sure YOTS’ spacebar is better.

the mythical improved cherry stabs?

Keycaps
At first I felt the keycaps on the YOTS are different than the one on the shine2, but after closer
inspection I couldn’t find any difference. Except the backside of YOTS keycaps are more like
beige than white compare to shine2 keycaps. I also remembered reading somewhere that the snake
spacebar is better than the alternative model. So I checked it out, but I found those spacebar
are the same except for the different motif.

YOTS left, shine2 right

snake top, alternative bottom

Built quality
Compare to all the board that I have, this keyboard is at the top tier. Yes, this badass duck
is better than filco majestouch2. It is also better than its older brother ducky shine2 and ducky
g2 pro. Compare to poker2, well except for the PBT keycaps, I don’t think there’s competition
between the two. However please do note that the built quality that I refer here is the solid
feeling that I got from looking and typing on those boards.

off center key on shine2

centered key on YOTS

the engraving quality looks good to me

it is YOTS for sure. For those who wandered bout the character, it is "Gui Si" from "Ba Zi"
means "year of water snake". It happens every 60 years.

Favourite lighting mode
reactive mode

Conclusion
I really like this keyboard despite that I really wish it has much more weight and I really wish
it has thick PBT instead of ABS.

Note that no duck or snake were harmed during the review.

The YOTS were sold out at mechanicalkeyboard.com just recently.

All: thanks for the kind words. I was kinda nervous actually as this is my first review.

I haven't posted any reviews yet, so you are one up on me.

Nice review - pointing out what you like and don't might make someone else think "oh yeah I hadn't thought of that".
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

You'll be waiting forever.

Shine 3 TKL yes, and Ducky mini yes, but not YotS TKL or mini :(

I'm trying to sell my Ducky Shine 3 YOTS ISO since I found out about the joy of typing on PBT.

Great keyboard, but the ABS is just not for me, along with the cherry stabs that feel horrible on the enter and long shift key.

Great review dude, hope you enjoy it.

You can change the keycaps to PBT if you want, but the cherry stabs won't go anywhere.
Too bad you don't like the stabs.

Nice review. Interesting that you find the overall quality higher than Filco. Doesn't that go against the accepted norm around here?

Ducky has continually been changing and being amazing over the years.

Filco hasn't done much other than the minila.

Great review and close up pics.
I recently got one and swapped out my Shine 2 and I really like it, feels much more substantial and zero squeaky space bar.
I go from a Topre, to Greens, to this (blues) on a regular basis and I really enjoy using it, and its so prettyyy.

Nice assortment of custom keycaps on there too :)

It's just based on my experienced with filco.
The one I got came with broken key cap and has squeeky backspace.

buying ds3 was a ritualistic thing for me like the 170 bucks i paid for gw2 last May.

i still left 20% unfinished rainbow keycaps unswapped, the keyboard did not wow me like shine2 did. naturally i didn't use it as much as shine 2 which was about a week.

my go to cherry red still remains to be 6gv2 due to its feeling the most solid among all my 7 or so cherry reds.

the badassery that is custom LED modes faded away with the initial hardware problem,  came back abit with the updates,  but with the ripple mode still on hold, i am really upset with ducky's efficiency.

on a side note, my snake space bar is triple reinforced on the back , unlike yours. WHAT, mine isn't even YOTS.

Interesting, maybe ducky made the triple reinforced spacebar on earlier batches.
Is it possible for you to post the backside of the spacebar?

Thanks.

Thanks for the review. Based on the weight you described, the case is made from aluminum sheets and not carved out aluminum block? One request if it's not too much trouble, is to have pictures of the internals.

the mythical improved cherry stabs?

What's so mythical about them? They look like standard plate-mounted cherry stabs to me.

Sorry, I don't want to void the warranty so soon. So maybe some other time.

That's why it's mythical as nobody know if it's really an improved cherry stabs or not.

I just got mine today too!!
Love it. Although I also wished it was a wee bit more heavy.
Since I heard that Ducky restocks some of their keycap sets every year, the one I want is the black(or white of there's no black) blank PBT to create a cool backlighting effect, but if anyone can confirm that that will be great!
