Post your Dream Keyboard.jpg
« on: Wed, 27 March 2013, 00:38:09 »
or .png or .gif

After seeing one of samwisekoi's posts of his hard-wired keyboard it gave me an idea on the topic of the "perfect" keyboard. I would love too see what lurks in everyones mind about their perfect keyboard.

These are mine. Colour scheme isn't what I would pick but Paint is rather in-compliant.

always thought that case was a little ugly... maybe it's the white and chrome... or the feet or the fact that the entire bottom is not flat or something. whatever it is it doesn't look quite right to me. sure makes a uTron look affordable though...

This layout with mx blues, and these kind of key cap colors, in a black metal poker case (apologies for the WASD custom screenshot, I couldn't bring myself to open up Illustrator yet):

I can see why people complain about bank balances here! Custom key set ~$80, metal poker case ~$100, a poker or GH60 for the switches and PCB ~$80, another keyboard but with alps $!!!, another key cap set $60, that other group buy because it's amazing $50, that custom braided cable $25, that second poker for work in browns because blues are too loud $80, the third poker in case one breaks $80, a fourth poker with reds $80, three more braided cables to match each keyboard $75...

I want it all!

It's definitely the MKC. The MKC has a curve on the bottom which you can see on that photo. Also, the MKC has a nice smooth anodised finish, whereas the Vortex has a rough one. If that isn't enough proof then : http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34606.msg652260#msg652260

I suppose it will take some time to find out what I (dis)like about the ErgoDox. Until then, I'm quite happy with my choc mini—in fact, I'd do only two minor changes, add
  • a dedicated Insert key instead of Pause/Break,
  • a fn+something combo to emulate the Menu key.
I'm actually fine with the non-standard spacebar, because AltGr is moved slightly to the left, compared to the standard layout.

A "real" keyboard for Mac systems...preferably with buckling-spring keyswitches, in satin aluminum. Two USB ports at each rear corner for convenience, full-size layout with all standard Mac key functions. If you own a Mac, would you like to see this as a real product? What's the most you would pay for such a keyboard if it were offered? I didn't think it would be OK to put the Apple logo on the rendering, so I used a logo symbol of my own...

look at the back of the case - something like half an inch is angled up so it rests on the rear feet.

mike48 if the matias boards looked like that (a combo of AEKII and more contemporary alu styling) than the early-mid 2000s plastic-heavy 'Pro' peripherals that apple released i would actually consider it... too bad about alps. capacitive buckling spring would be awesome but seems a little too old-school for apple to embrace. maybe they should talk to Topre?

I think Apple's main objection would be click-clack noise of B/S switches. If noise-reducing techniques were employed which managed to preserve the crisp, springy tactile "breakover" of IBM B/S switches but minus most of the key and spring noise, leaving only a pleasant faint "tic" at breakover, then I think Apple (and their customers) would be more receptive. This is meant as a significant upgrade, both in terms of price and performance, but I think those who value a great keyboard would be interested enough to buy them. If made in China, in moderately high volumes and by a high-quality vendor such as Foxconn, these could probably sell retail for around $250-300. I also have in mind a highly-serviceable construction method using individual switch modules and none of those blasted plastic rivets to pop off.

It sits perfectly flat in this photo. The back pegs are not extended out. It may look odd, but it works as intended. You can see how exactly perfect it sits just from looking at the lines between the table and the case.

Hey, that's my keyboard. What a coincidence - I came here to say that I finally got my dream keyboard and this is it. For decades I've been searching for a keyboard with spherical keycaps angled by row, thick triple-shot PBT, with an uber-clicky switch like the Model F, thick metal case and a useful layout which is a morphing of Amiga, Mac and PC:

Show Image

From my research, I don't think it's possible to find any keyboard better than this in the entire history of computing. Not only that, but it's Made in Canada - manufactured just down the street from where I once lived. (sure beats "Made in China")

:)) :)) :)) :))

it's an aesthetic thing. you can clearly see that the rear portion of the bottom angles up -- whether or not that effects the angle of the keyboard, it looks sloppy to me.
i always thought those feet were really tacky too. they might have been well-engineered but it all looks like they were just trying to add some 'cool' factor rather than try to refine an already-nice product. i'd be really into a seamless aluminum case in the same style as the stock HHKB case, maybe with detachable feet similar to the KMAC, but i just don't get the hype around that particular HHKB... nerd appeal i guess.

The 356 mini isn't my ideal board because of the layout.. but whatever switches this dude is using sound amazing. If he's the same person who put the gallery up on DT then he's using grey switches with a custom spring.

He's using light grey IIRC which are tactile. On paper it's my perfect switch.. Tactile, fairly light, and sounds divine. I need to try these ergo greys as well as ergo clears and then decide which I like best.

Yes and no. There's no way in hell he'd just put 55g springs in there and call it a day. Just the fact that he used vintage blacks and it's a 356 mini, I bet he has it lubed properly, stickered, the whole nine yards. So I can guarantee you they're different from cherry reds.

As long as we're on the subject of dream boards, here are a few more of mine (in my dreams, that is):

These are PC/Windows boards extended a bit beyond the 104-key layout. I added a Sleep key and 4 more function keys. The same case can then also be used for a Mac version with all 109 Mac keys and functions, like in my previous image post. It would be especially cool if (at least on the Windows board) these extra function keys were programmable -- or better yet, if all 16 of them were programmable.

The illuminated keytops are indeed stretching the dream a bit, especially if the switches are buckling-spring type (my favorite kind). The rendering shows sharp, evenly-lit markings with perfect detail -- although I doubt this could be achieved in the real world. I depicted all the "lock" keys as activated to draw attention to the indicator LED's; I prefer this arrangement over the usual placement in the upper-right corner of the board. This might also be tricky to implement with B/S switches, but I think I can figure out a method to do it.

Hope you all enjoy the drawings!

so as I was reading this I was thinking " ummmm is this just going to be pix of keyboards or no? don't most ppl just have there dream keyboard?" then a friend was like "well what if its to much $$" then i was like "but a grand is not to much??" so long story short I ended up thinking about how I * in the past * would just buy the cheapest thing I could find, and now I don't think a grand is to much for a keyboard (need less to say I have 6 mec keyboards)

But on to my dream keyboard ...is a 60% blue alps (that im working on right now) with all blank black keys. BTW's I tried to die my alps key caps didn't work well here's a pic

my dream keyboard is actually a keyboard I owned years ago and sold (yes, I'm stupid).

IBM Model M, Space saver (tenkeyless). 1987 model.

You can find something that looked like it:

http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/categories.main/parentcat/9242

Except... I want a flourescent green casing and a flourescent yellow keys (preferably glow in the dark!)

A keyboard like that literally glows, HAHA!

I dream about Unicomp tenkeyless or HHKB (definitely not the poker or any other 60% layout, HHKB is the only true 60% layout for me) layout with a pointing stick and options (DIP switches) for Windows, Mac and Unix layouts...
Would be nice if it was slightly better build quality than current keyboards.
If it used capacitive switches like Model F it would be even better but I don't even dare dreaming about it :D
